Seems like most of the people yelping about Gibson's crimes against humanity aren't the people buying those guitars. If Gibson is making it right, then there's nothing to see here. Am I wrong?
The problem is people hold Gibson to a much higher standard than other companies at similar price points. If there is anything at all not perfect with a Gibson, these people never shut up about it, but they’re the same people who tell you to get the frets dressed on a brand new strat and go on about how much they love Fender. They also rip Gibson for suing people, but forget that Fender and most of the other guitar giants also sue small companies all the time. Let it be noted that I love Fender too, and if somebody wants to be critical, be my guest. That being said, be fair and consistent.
It was really helpful to me to go to Casino and talk to Jonathan about relics. I would encourage anyone thinking about buying a relic (from Gibson, Fender or whoever) to go and look at the different levels in person. Being able to see how the finish and the raw wood looked together as well as how the necks felt helped me understand the process better. And as always, Jonathan and the staff were patient, helpful and extremely knowledgeable.
I've only had a couple Minor Problems with my gibsons And they Took care of it The have always done right by Me. You tell it like it is & favorite people To listen to about Guitars Much respect Keep up the good work thank you.
Something doesn’t add up Murphy labs was supposed to duplicate the method that tom Murphy has been using for years….now it sounds like it’s a new method that wasn’t tested? It’s always something with Gibson and quality…..you don’t get that with companies like Musicman, PRS etc
Bought a PRS 4 months ago. Other than swapping out the tuners for something locking, I love the trem, the pickups, the neck...everything. They build amazing instruments for the price.
That is hilaaaaarious. You have to wonder how we are going to look back on these Murphy Lab "pinnacle of Gibson better than they ever were!!" guitars.... seems to me ever since they came out they have been artificially endorsed without concrete reason why aside from an obvious cash grab. $7-9k. "Murphy is a freaking genius!!" etc... clearly we can see that may not necessarily be the case...
Oddly, I can see Baxter in a vintage onesie tank top swimsuit, and Jonathan in short lobster print trunks...Both of you could rock that look very well.
Morning guys! I'm not big on heavy relics, but to my surprise I fell in love with the way Eastman relics their Vintage Violin finished guitars. I find that they look like they're really well played, yet cared for vintage guitars. I want it to continue to wear, and my SB59/V does something that no other of the over 100 guitars I've owned has done. Each time I open the case,(every day!), I fall in love all over again. I have yet to see a Fender, or Gibson that does hat for me! I believe there's a place for those guitars, but not in my music room. And I don't pay attention to posts on the forums about sour grapes, if you don't like it, send it back! Have a great day! Peace, Keith
I got a 58 Murphy Lab LP and it is having the finish flake off on the lower bout. Right where my strap makes contact with the back of the cherry back and little chunks are flaking off more than when I bought her. But I bought the Murphy because this was one of the first modern CS LP's that actually sounds like a vintage 58-60. So I don't plan on getting rid of her.
I want my guitars to age like the original 50s/60s ones. I have a Historic Makeover Les Paul Custom on the way and they put unplasticized lacquer on it, so I’m really excited about how it’ll feel and age over time. I didn’t get it pre-aged I’m not really into that. The best Fender I’ve ever owned is an American Vintage 1959 in Sherwood Green Stratocaster with the flash coat lacquer. I absolutely ADORE that guitar and she’s just so lively and resonate, the thin flash coat finish is my absolute favorite I can see some of the wood grains underneath the Sherwood green paint that’s how thin it is. I wish they’d bring them back :/
I would not consider it a problem if my “paid for relic’ing” continued to relic. Isn’t that the point? Since vintage guitars are becoming far and few in between, this is a way to enjoy it without the extra money or search time and the same issues would happen except you paid even more money for an original and no company offering to “fix” it for you.
I own a Murphy Lab ES-335.. As soon as I published on IG there were 3 persons that told me they were sending their 335 murphy labs back to the dealers as there were many issues on the finish.I hope the company is doing better these days but quality issues are still their main problem.
At the end of the day it depends on whether you like relics. If you spend a fortune buying a guitars that look old, how can you complain if they behave like they're old?
Some interesting banter boys! I'm pretty much on the same page as y'all on the relicing. On a different note, Baxter, are you a Robert Smith fan? I think I heard you mention The Cure before, but you are for sure rocking the Staring at the Sea era Robert Smith do today. Well done.
My WW 10 ready relic 62 telecaster is definitely showing some wear and that’s the way I want it. IfI ding it accidentally which I have several times I like the way it looks. It’s about 15 months old. It will look even better in another 15 months.
I just bought a Highway One Telecaster yesterday. Not sure what the hate is for them. It has some good honest wear on it. That’s probably the only one of mine that will ever really age I expect. The finish seems thin. All my other ones are newish and I don’t think will really ever age. And the more guitars you have the less miles on each too right? I’m hoping to get an R8 this fall but I’ll be wanting VOS. Not Murphy. They look great just not for me.
I love these videos and I found an interesting challenge. Mute it and turn on the CC and see if you can follow wtf is going on. Lol makes a great drinking game as well!
If I'm not mistaken, the guitars you're talking about are not the first actual official Murphy lab relics. The first one was the 1967 Jimi Hendrix flying the reissue. That's got a black finish. Mine has a chip in it. On the trogly guitar show at 2 minutes and 18 seconds he shows you that his has a paint chip right near the back of the strap button. I understand that these things can't remain perfect and I'm not sure that I want them to either. But with paint chips it's a slippery slope. If moisture or whatever continues to make the guitar chip paint, that's an issue. Then again who knows? Those may end up being the ones worth the most money. It's just that if you go to resell it, that's the first thing a dealers going to bite you on.
Underworld flicks kick ass-agreed! Also, i bought a sweet heavy relicd R54 on Reverb but when it showed up i realized it had been relicd by someone who didnt know what they were doing and the amber-tinted top coat-which is what gave the whole guitar especially the binding-a beautiful amber hue was crap-totally flaking off and i realized it was a lousy amateur job. Luckily, the guitar itself was awesome and i got a great deal on it so i immediately shipped it to kim at historic makeovers. The brief was to relic the crap out of it but do it right! They crushed it imo, tho, in fairness to Kim, he wanted to do a much subtler ageing but it woulda left the binding more highliter-yellow with little or no ageing on the gold hardware and i hate that so he pushed way past where he normally would do a LP Custom. Anyhow, relicing kicks ass if it’s done right like HM. But glad to hear the ML guys took the bad ones back and fixed the issue-some of those murph’s are really cool.
I hate hate hate reliced guitars. I don’t mind if my guitar gets the occasional scratch or ding, but damnit my black Strat cost more than my first car, I’m going to take care of it
Anyone have a good story with Gibson warranty? I'm 7 months in with my 1st run ES 335 64 in cherry and the neck paint is flaking bad....i emailed Gibson 3 days ago....hoping to heat from them soon....the value of this guitar has now plummeted...sad.
When car guys want a patina to last they do a satin clear over it. This would ruin the feel of a guitar so either put it on display or enjoy it. I find a light relic helps me play better and enjoy the guitar more because I’m not worried about the finish. I actually bumped my headstock on my strat recently and laughed, can’t say I would have had the same reaction on a pristine guitar.
Pretty sure thats a problem w the older models that has since been fixed, gibson has commented on this and offers exchanges. The nitro wasnt bonding to the wood. Right on Jonathon you said what i was typing.
I know it's popular to rag on Murphy Labs for their ungodly prices. I'm no fan of relic guitars and will never have enough money for one of them. But I will say when there is an issue all I ever expect is for the manufacturer/retailer to make it right with the least amount of stress possible. It seems like they're acknowledging the error and replacing the guitars without question so I couldn't really ask for more than that.
If you're buying a guitar that has been aged, whether it's new/reliced or old/worn thru use, it doesn't matter if it's losing chips of paint imo. you bought it knowing it will age more if you use it. it's like buying a gibson not knowing if you bring it thru temperature extremes the finish will check. buy that new LP standard in a hot arizona store and unveil it to friends in a cold air conditioned room ... that's on you. ... IMO
My 30year old Telecaster (which is now called a player Tele). Still show no signs of any sort of relicing! Maple fretboard, Olympic White color. In 1991 Nitro was banned, Poly was the rule!
I keep my guitar in a case because my kids/ wife would be so upset if they accidentally scratched/ damaged it. I wouldn’t be worried about it, but they would think I’m just being kind and pretending not to care. I play the guitar almost daily so they know that I value it. I’ve got scars and if my guitar acquires some so be it, but I’d like to spare my family the distress. 🎸
My 2019 goldtop has a great finish for half the price the complaint is when you put a tuner on the headstock its poor quality vainer leaves a ring from my snark ill relic it in my own time
All this frozen in time guitar stuff kinda confirms my thesis that some people actually don't want vintage or relic guitars, they just think it's cool, but can't stand the "damage" going beyond from what they initially bought.
Although I dump hours into playing nitro guitars, the aging I get is minimal (a little forearm hazing). There is zero chance of me having a cool aged guitar road worn or heavy relic just by playing. I got a few relic Fender custom shops and I just bought a Murphy Labs. They are way more interesting guitars with the correct aging and the choice wood. The idea of just playing a $3-$5k true historic guitar until it gets to that point is not realistic, and if I tried to get it there by beating it like Cobain, I'm sure it would just be a lump of s***.
Ha ha, that’s my guitar bottom right pic on the thumbnail ( with the flaking between the volume and treble. Bought recently at my local boutique guitar shop. It kind of caught my attention because of the fault and I couldn’t stop checking it out. Was still the best Gibson in the shop and the best Les Paul I’d ever played. Ended up getting a pretty huge reduction on the original price and actually love its scar (which is how it affectionately known in our house now.) 😏I’m pretty sure it’s going to end up with a couple of more bumps and bruises along the way, as I’m one of those rare guitarists who actually play their top end guitars to death, not stick em in the vault or under the bed as some sort of investment, only to ever play em every other Sunday🥴 Should I tap up Gibson for a refin 🤔 Nah, who can be arsed with all the hassle 🤷🏻♂️It’ll be reet I’m sure 🤟🎸
If you really want one that looks like a real 60 year old guitar that’s really more authentic looking with the finish checks falling off. I’ve seen real vintage lacquer that had that “alligator skin” look and feel. That’s why I personally don’t do the relics, nitro ages fast enough on its own if you’re playing on a lot. In all honesty I do like very thin neck finishes on maple necks but I let time do the checking.
Personally, I wrestled with purchasing a Murphy Lab when they came out but ultimately chose not to. I felt like with something so new and that used to be very personal to Tom, Gibson was bound to bungle it up; and it sure seems like they did. This is Cesar's second bumble, the first being the Adam Jones Signature Custom Shop Les Paul. Now he's about to make a third with this bizarre "Adam Jones Les Paul Standard," which is completely absurd. Let's see what happens!
I hate to be the one to say this, but I looked at several Murphy Labs guitars at a local store, and every single one of them had f@ed up finish problems... We're talking brand new guitars with laquer chips, buckle rash, ambered clear coats. I could swear someone had taken razor blades to the things, and get this: the prices were higher! I would think a "lab" could produce a nice looking guitar.
Nothing sadder than a brand new looking guitar… I have played a Japanese built Takamine Pro Series 4 dreadnought for 5 years / 1500+ hours…I live where humidity is just about right, so leave it out of it’s case so it gets played daily…. the spruce top is turning golden colored, (almost looks like cedar), has some scratches on the top and pick guard, and a couple belt buckle dings on the back. Sounds great and looks like it should look, a guitar played hard, and played on stage by me and other musicians without regard to it’s looks… I don’t want it to look trashed, but I don’t want to let the aesthetic affect who plays it, or how the play it.
Over last Year I bought 2 American Original 60s Strats (Olympic White and Shell Pink) I will mod the electronics to my use but regarding the rest schedule for them is this: 2021 NOS 2025 Journeyman Relic 2035 Relic 2050 Heavy Relic
The original Fender series, unfortunately, have a thin poly layer between the Nitro and the wood. The Nitro won’t wear directly through to the wood like a real vintage Nitro guitar would.
@@OrbitlynX I own an Original 50s Tele, and I can 100% confirm that there is a thin poly coat under the Nitro. (It’s got a few dinks and the undercoat is visible.) Andertons, in one of their product reviews talk about this, which is actually where I learned the sad truth for myself. It’s a real bummer and to say I was disappointed is an understatement, but, after some research I’ve found that this is actually a practice that fender started doing in the late 50s/early 60s, before the full poly coats became standard. As for the Poly coat under the Nitro, it is incredibly thin, and is still very easy to chip, however, as the Nitro starts to wear off you’ll be left with a smooth poly lining, rather than bare wood grain.
@@liamaubrey3086 Hi Liam, thank you for the info! Bummer indeed. I mean both of my Strats are super resonant and terrific guitars but bit shame on that poly layer. I have one road worn strat as well which is only nitro. I have also one matching headstock lacquer strat but there I knew that it is nitro over poly. I have a friend who has 73 strat, which he got from his couple generations older friend who played that guitar exclusively for 4 decades and didn't care for the looks or even functionality too much (screw from case was biting into guitar, only one pickup working properly, no frets and holes from fingernails in fretboard) but after bit restoration it is a killer vintage instrument even early 70s. I have high hopes for these american originals. I hope they will grow old (I'm 32 now) and relic with me for better.
@@OrbitlynX Yes, as you say, they are extremely resonant guitars, and in terms of playability and build quality they are extremely close to what the CS is putting out anyway. I’ve considered buying body blanks and applying the Nitro myself, and then switching the bodies out; might be worth looking if you’re after the Nitro wear without buying entirely new guitars.
A friend bought one, he then after a month sold it ... why ? because he wants the scars and real aging of the guitar to represent his guitar journey and skills, and not created by a Lab on a brand new guitar ... to each his own, nice guitars btw.
HOLOGRAM STICKERS ..... soon on Gibson Future Customs...ONLY AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE THRU BITCOIN or some shite... from a dude in australia hey man i fully dig this channel
@@jeremyelliott9831 most vintage guitars aren’t anywhere near $150k. The only ones that are in that ball park are pieces that were owned/played by someone famous or are literally one of a kind and have some special history. Fender makes plenty of boutique-like, vintage style instruments that aren’t relics. The relic detail is basically visual. You are paying a huge premium for someone to take a razor and sandpaper to a new instrument. I’m not aware of any material difference in the pickups.
One thing people don’t realize is they’re ruining the life of the guitar, it took decades upon decades for the original Gibson guitars to look the way they do, so what do they think these artificially aged guitars will look like in 50+ years?
I’m going to have my guitar shop owner to call Gibson and ask if I can buy the guitars having these issues for some sort of discounted price. It’s the only opportunity some of us will ever have to own one. I’m sure they still sound and feel amazing.
That’s exactly what I did. In fact the guitar shown bottom right of the thumbnail for this vid, is actually my guitar. Apparently it generated a bit of heat on TGP. It caught my eye because of the damage/fault between the volume and tone knobs. Went and tried it out and was the best Gibson LP in the shop by a long way. It just had the mojo was super light and sounded different to all the other LPs. Ended up getting it for £1100 ($1500) less. Looking forward to see how it continues to age as I play it.
I’ve never liked Gibson. But those Murphy lab guitars are beautiful. If I had the money I would buy a heavy relic les Paul burst and a gold top with p90s. But if I spent the 16-20k it would cost to buy both of those guitars, and the finish cracked off immediately, I would find it difficult not to set fire to something. Haha
@@CasinoGuitars here’s a theme - worst rated movie that are actually great: Battlefield Earth; Starship Troopers; Super Troopers; Dune; Hackers; The Running Man; Virtuosity…
My problem with Gibson that no one ever talks about is the lack of fretwire choice. Everyone else offers at least one guitar in the range with Jumbo fretwire. But even if I go Made2Measure. They don’t offer it. Which is pathetic. If they are trying to compete with the likes of ESP. Why not offer at least one production Les Paul with big frets. Also now they have a Plek machine, the frets get ground down a bit anyway. I compared my 2017 Les Paul to my brothers 2001 & his had bigger fretwire. I mean C’mon. I ended up going to my favourite luthier & having Jescar Evo Gold Jumbo fitted and an Earvana nut. Cost me 500 bucks but it’s an infinitely better guitar. But why can’t they do that at the factory?
Can you buy these recalls at a severely discounted price point lol Oh well.... Issue I have with Fender CS is that they finish check the body but don't do anything to the necks Having owned 58 Strat I have to say that the neck was more checked than the body so Bax if you ever get a chance to talk to any of the guy's let them know for originality's sake Oh well I still love my Tropo Strat

My 2019 goldtop has a great finish for half the price the complaint is when you put a tuner on the headstock its poor quality vainer leaves a ring from my snark ill relic it in my own time
Whatever happened to the backwall guitars videos?
More coming soon!
@@CasinoGuitars Noice.
Spraying your finish with compressed air will cause this sometimes, however I wouldn’t complain. It’s an aged guitar.
All this frozen in time guitar stuff kinda confirms my thesis that some people actually don't want vintage or relic guitars, they just think it's cool, but can't stand the "damage" going beyond from what they initially bought.
Yes.
Wouldn't have happened if those derps who bought them had simply Played Authentic.
I didn't know that Murphy Lab guitars were ever looked at after the initial viewing. I figured people just locked them away.
I thought they were wallhangers, but apparently some of these blooz lawyers are actually playing them.
Baxter, check out the movie "Jolt". oh, and the movie "Boss Level". I think you'll like them. No comment on Gibson.
Replace "Lab" with "Law" and you have the answer.
why doesn't Fender make a fresh and clean nitro finish?
1st thing I'm playing on it is gona be Bon Jovi Blaze of Glory
I just want to know.. Is Gibson offering the returned guitars at a discount? I'll take one..lol...

Frank glad to hear from you and thanks for checking in, and great name for your guitar btw!

I exclusively wear brand new Carhart coats during my practice time to age my guitars naturally. It's very expensive actually.
That is unfortunate. Glad to see Gibson is getting their customers sorted, though.

He has a V now
Hi Gibson? I'm having a problem with the guitar I payed extra to have prematurely aged aging prematurely.
You’re joking right? 😂😂
I'm about to pay off a 5000 dollar 1966 Gibson J-160E and she is not living in no case I'm playing the shit outta that thing
I like Kate too
.. named one of my cars after her ... Selene.... a 92 jaguar xj6 ...
Over last Year I bought 2 American Original 60s Strats (Olympic White and Shell Pink) I will mod the electronics to my use but regarding the rest schedule for them is this:
2021 NOS
2025 Journeyman Relic
2035 Relic
2050 Heavy Relic
The original Fender series, unfortunately, have a thin poly layer between the Nitro and the wood. The Nitro won’t wear directly through to the wood like a real vintage Nitro guitar would.
@@liamaubrey3086 Hi, do you have some source to back it up? Thx
It wouldn't be of true Gibson heritage without quality issues. I've got enough of them to know and I keep coming back for more........
True....sad but true and we still love and want them!
A friend bought one, he then after a month sold it ... why ? because he wants the scars and real aging of the guitar to represent his guitar journey and skills, and not created by a Lab on a brand new guitar ... to each his own, nice guitars btw.

Hey, Yeah!
Halp! My reliced guitar is too reliced!
Of all the dumb guitar trends, relics have taken the top prize
Besides being way too expensive? Gosh , my relic’d guitar is flaking. Can’t have it both ways .
I’m going to have my guitar shop owner to call Gibson and ask if I can buy the guitars having these issues for some sort of discounted price. It’s the only opportunity some of us will ever have to own one. I’m sure they still sound and feel amazing.
Keep your eyes on the Gibson Demo Shop. I’m guessing once repaired that’s where they will be sold off.
I'm going to start a Gofundme for this guy. Maybe we can get him a comb.
Haha
Lol. Buy yourself a stock LP Goldtop, set fire to it for a minute et voila, you saved yourself 17.5k on your relic.
Hey guys! Love your take on this. I reported on this on my channel a few weeks back if you want more details. Cheers!

I think the doo is more of a buckwheat than gumby dammit.
You ever get the feeling like Jonathan would beat Baxter at an arm wrestling contest? Because I do.
