It's this 'line' that does it for me.... "The native daughters of the golden west They're made of light, We never would have guessed" Ouch!!! But yes. Absolutely brilliant and one of the reasons why 'Crush' is not only my favourite OMD album, but in my Top 6 albums of all time.
absolutely fantastic night at the Liverpool royal philharmonic Andy was awesome singing Native daughters . He blew my mind. What a brave and memorable performance
What an amazing feat from Andy on this track, simply amazing how he stretches his voice to the limit! It's undoubtedly one of the songs from OMD that could almost be qualified as "rock", alongside 88 seconds. Just goes to show how much underrated OMD is - who knows this band truly, apart from "Electricity" or "Enola Gay"? So sad that they are remembered by just these songs, albeit excellent and justified hits, they made so much more incredible material.
For whoever has never recorded vocals in a studio, this has got to be the hardiest thing to do. Keyboardists have keyboards. Guitarists have guitars. Drummers have drums. Singers only have their own voice and it is very physical. It is a matter of breathing, of hitting the right notes at the right time and at the right pitch and of putting all the words the lyricist wrote in your mouth at the right time, with energy and clarity.
Criminally underrated! Chill inducing when Andy holds that note at the end. Too bad the band is ashamed of this album and will never reissue it. I asked them personally in 2010, and they said maybe 'Junk Culture' will get reissued, but not 'Crush' or 'The Pacific Age'. :(
Thanks to Oldham music library for having Crush in their new records section in 1985, i was a member and would often lend albums i would never have bought of or perhaps never heard.
Was always fascinated with this song and video..... long before we had internet and if you could afford a VCR.. I had to rent one to see the CRUSH video-- world's longest held note ????
Very 80's "Goth" sounding. Crush was a very good but very Bi-Polar album. Meaning mood and musical styles were all over the map on this album. I always loved the segue from 88 seconds into this song when I was a young goth/punk/waver kid back in the 80's.
What's Andy doing, starting around the 0:25 second mark. telling the guys to adjust his volume? is it a funny sign to the camera? kinda weird. This song is just superb
This song simply rocks, imagine it will in 20 more years too. Wish we would hear less 'hits' on their tour setlist and more artistic gems like this...also on my wish list would be: Bloc Bloc Bloc, 88 Sec, The Dead Girls, Flame of Hope, Lights are going out, We love you...sure I'm forgetting others.... Cheers from Washington DC!
It's awful to think that the band are ashamed of 'Crush'! It's not their strongest, by any means, but it's nothing to be ashamed of! Please don't tell me they feel the same way about 'The Pacific Age' - it's a fantastic album and my own personal favourite. :-(
tiré de l'album ' crush ' , qui est pou moi le meilleur album d'OMD !!! , les autres , sont trés bien , mais ils n'ont pas la profondeur musical de cet album !!
I love OMD but was never quite sure what to make of Crush, It almost sounds like its stuck and confused. Having said that I like most of the tracks on the album.
even OMD’s experimental stuff sounds fantastic. When I listen to these tracks i think of them like a primer for their more beautiful ones- can’t have one without the other
Really? Andy said he doesn't like this Album? It's one of my favorites OMD albums. maybe he meant that it's straining on his voice to perform this number and 88 seconds... live?
their music is being dominated by bigger generalisations about music and genres, the mythical birth of nationalistic futuristic synth pioneers etc. But they did a whole lot of very cool things, this album, junk culture, pacific age seem more succinct and broader in their range than dazzle ships and the earlier ones.
I haven't been to one of "those" places in a million years, but I would go just to see someone strip to OMD LOL... "Universal" might be a good song choice as well...
This is the only OMD record I really like.. funny how it's looked at as one of their worst. What the hell? Some of the plinkity plink synth stuff on the other stuff just bugs me. This record was epic.
I always imagine this being played with the help of a symphony. Imagine all those stringed instruments jamming out to this. Perfection.
They did that, Jeffrey. czcams.com/video/TfqFWF4oWyA/video.html
And you can, they did it at their concert with the Liverpool Philharmonic, and yes it's great.
This has always been in my top 5 OMD songs!
Glad to see other fans love it as much as I do. This is one of their darkest songs by far.
It's this 'line' that does it for me....
"The native daughters of the golden west

Ouch!!!
But yes. Absolutely brilliant and one of the reasons why 'Crush' is not only my favourite OMD album, but in my Top 6 albums of all time.
Brilliant! I love the segue from 88 seconds to Native Daughters... gives me chills! even to this day... its timeless...
absolutely fantastic night at the Liverpool royal philharmonic Andy was awesome singing Native daughters . He blew my mind. What a brave and memorable performance
probably my favorite song form OMD. Wish I could find the chord progression from this song.
Loved how it segued from "88 Seconds in Greensboro".

Damn! I LOVE this song!!!
tHIS Song is so haunting. LoVe OMD. The Two main chords are E and C. Enjoy.
Probably my favorite song from OMD. I miss the songs.

+Allen Blaine Yes same me, i have that video but no VCR anymore haha
Nah I believe that distinction belongs to the lead singer of Manowar.
Chill inducing....definitely holds up after all these years...gees...what visionaries
Love this song! But it's much creepier listening to it with eyes closed and not watching them in the studio.

So was I. Awesome gig.
I was on the top balcony dancing me nuts .....ndogw sounded the bollocks with malcolms drumming .....
One of my top favourites by the group: dark, evocative, eminently suggestive.

@whitejellyfungus I used to play this in my Goth/Deathrock sets all the time. i should really drop it again sometime soon.

Lagu yang unik dan enak didengar... Unique and good to hear.
Great song, it just doesn't sound like your typical new wave song ;), there's just an air about it...
Ooops, sorry to post twice ----
I love OMD but was never quite sure what to make of Crush, It almost sounds like its stuck and confused. Having said that I like most of the tracks on the album.

Really? Andy said he doesn't like this Album? It's one of my favorites OMD albums. maybe he meant that it's straining on his voice to perform this number and 88 seconds... live?
OMG... anyone who says annything bad about this song.. Does not like good music.
they are at their best when they rock.
their music is being dominated by bigger generalisations about music and genres, the mythical birth of nationalistic futuristic synth pioneers etc. But they did a whole lot of very cool things, this album, junk culture, pacific age seem more succinct and broader in their range than dazzle ships and the earlier ones.
Native daughters of the golden west.. they talked all day, but we were not impressed!
this is one of my stripper songs...when i become a stripper
I haven't been to one of "those" places in a million years, but I would go just to see someone strip to OMD LOL... "Universal" might be a good song choice as well...

What keeps you from becoming it?

I understand that Andy does not like this album .. Certe it is good but It does not look like at OMD, the "New Wave" was put aside... :/
Great song! Not-so-great video.
This is the only OMD record I really like.. funny how it's looked at as one of their worst. What the hell? Some of the plinkity plink synth stuff on the other stuff just bugs me. This record was epic.
