They covered this from Scritti politti. Madness went crazy down hill and had no direction after Michael Barson left the band, he was the engine and the driving force. Yes they all wrote lyrics but he was the production mind behind them. His departure left a huge hole and it showed.
@@peternagy-im4be not per se, but he kept them focused, geared up and working hard, when they wanted to fuck around. He was the engine, I’m not saying they didn’t have some good songs sans Barson, but you can hear for yourself the difference between present and post Barson. You have to allow for the fact they were exhausted since they produced so many great songs and albums in quick succession, their label kept them working to a point they were so knackered and starting resent what they did, which is natural for anybody.

In my eyes there are only 2 very good songs on the album, those being Yesterday's Men and Uncle Sam, the rest are either okay or not great, especially when compared to their previous work. I think this album is let down mainly by the production and lack of Barson (both probably go hand in hand). I think when Barson left they lost a lot of confidence, especially musically. Lyrically some of the songs are well written, it's just the terrible mid 80s production and heavy use of synthesisers and drum machines make much of the album feel incredibly naff, dated and cheap. It feels like the band at this point werent putting in their all in the project and much of it doesn't feel very much like "madness" and more of an average mid 80s band. I hate to say this because i do like most of Madness's stuff, its just this album sticks out like a sore thumb in my opinion. Had much of the album's material been written earlier with Barson and not leaned into the 80s production so much, im sure some of the songs on the album could've become well regarded tracks. Im thinking songs like White heat, burning the boats, tears you cant hide and Coldest day.
Never should have been a single and a bad idea full stop, though didn't stop me buying it at the time :) Indicative of the album as you can hear Woody being written out of the band as it lacks that organic feel of natural drums. There was certainly room for both.

Coldest Day or Burning the boats are much better songs. Burning the Boats would have been a decent single IMO

Should never have been released as a single. Too long and cumbersome. Coldest day should have been lifted off mad not mad as a single instead.
