Thanks for watching! What do you think of the Sanremo YOU? What machines are on your endgame list?
The You is a stunning machine... but for less than half the price in USD, the Decent is mine.
@@Sinisterg60 quite a different machine though, the YOU is more of an all rounder, as I've heard the Decent is not really for steaming milk etc. I wanna try a Decent more though, only played with a friends and haven't had one at home to use.
@@Sinisterg60 more "affordable" in Europe - slightly above LMLM.
I own a Sanremo YOU. Incredible machine. Unprecedented flexibility to parameterize shots (except Decent, but less complex). Lets you discover your beans newly (I am a home roaster of medium - light beans). I think the steam boiler pressure is just getting used to. I have been able to create my best ever milk foam on this machine.
Yeah 3 weeks isn't really enough time to get used to it. I'll keep practicing with the commercial machine in the cafe 😅
Hi Christopher, Charlie - this is a machine I’ve been eyeing. Do you know what the potential of the touch screen is in the sense of whether SR have/are going to update the software to make it longer lasting like how the Decent is made allowing for constant updates.
Does it also connect to a Bluetooth scale and stops itself at the target weight?
@@the_viper_leo From my POV this is a computer (probably an embedded specific chip) behind the touch screen, controlling all of the functions that are available like extraction pressure (through gear pump), touch screen, temps for group head and boilers, enablement of valves etc. There will be a limit to what you can do in SW due to the processing power of the embedded chip, but Sanremo possibly could make this a Decent like machine with a more traditional DB concept instead of mixing pumps and thermoblocks. A Testla for coffee machines. You can export and import profiles through the built-in USB port. There is no reason why you could not do this online once the app is enabled. And of course you could add additional screens ... I am collecting ideas for functional improvements (eg. new screens, semi-automatic flow mode etc.) from different forums I am active in and will forward to Sanremo once the collection becomes stable and reaches backing from other owners.
I can not tell you whether there is bluetooth functionality built-in. The machine does not show up on a bluetooth scan, although you can connect through the Sanremo Connector app to its WiFi module (but without additional functionality: my contact at Sanremo told me it would be enabled in Mai 2023). But even if it was not built in you could add it through a bluetooth device plugged into the USB port. Or use the app to connect to bluetooth devices via your mobile phone.
The million dollar question is: how much is Sanremo willing to invest into building a community around the YOU and potential follow-on models. They could become a serious contender do Decent, Faemina and VBM domobar super electronic if they do nurture the community with additional features and upgrades. I am willing to invest some of my time (and I am sure others will do as well), let us see how seriously Sanremo takes this.
Music is a good 6dB too loud bud.
I'll fix it next time 😅
@@homecafecharlie Great work otherwise, sorry I'm a mastering engineer so these things stick out to me.
Helpful - thank you
love the look, I would experiment like crazy with this, but at 4 in morning I would like a simple cap/latte and this looks like I could do both (play and simple). Thank you for the review.
Yes it's very versatile!!!
Hi Charlie, l appreciate a detailed review of that beautiful machine, it looks very complicated.
It's a complex one but if you learn some stuff about flow control you can get crazy good coffee!
That was fun. Hopefully they send you a Bezzera DE Next 😮❤
I need something with flow control for sure 😉
Not the sparkly review I was hoping for but still looks like it could be an enjoyable machine. Thanks for keeping it real Charlie. Not for YOU 😂
As other comments suggested, it really looks like the Decent would be a better choice, even though it doesn't look nearly as stylish (I wouldn't mind, although neither is in my price range).
Speaking of the looks, the hollow space in the back suggests that the entire machine could be more compact... It's a design choice I guess.
On the YOU, did you find the touchscreen convenient? I'd expect that wet fingers (e.g. from taking a milk carton from the fridge) can give poor results. But that may be a non-issue if you can mostly operate the machine with the knobs and the paddle.
Anyway, at this point, given that I don't buy lottery tickets, I think my Lelit Victoria is pretty much my endgame machine. A different league!
I didn't have any issue with pressing the screen with wet fingers, but I did have to wipe it clean quite often. It's not quite as responsive as my phone, but it worked well overall 😉
I looked at this as an option at first, but the boilers were too small for my liking and went with the Rocket R9 One. Regardless, it looks like a great machine! Congrats!
I'd love to try out an R9 One 😎
Funny, this (and the much more advanced UI with a lot of manual lever profiles that can be saved) were reasons for me not to choose the R9 One. I like the R9 One, its sturdyness and the quality of coffee it produces. May be a European (pricing of energy) issue, but I think 1.9 l brew and 3.9 l steam boilers are not fitting today's environmental concerns. Heating up times are so much better with the smaller (0.5l brew and 1l steam) boilers. 5:30 minutes until both boilers are fully heated and the group head is hot. And re-heating after a 3 hour switch off to full temps is 2:30 minutes. I had a Carimali UNO Gastro machine for the past 21 years, equipped with a 3,5l boiler. I would never go back. Energy consumption with the YOU vs. the UNO is down by 50%, despite the strong heating elements and the separate electric heating of the group head (this is of course depending on your usage profile).
How are the shot quality from the r9 one ? And how long have you had it for ?
@@revolutiondance1141 Had it for about a month and its fantastic. I am coming from an ECM Synchronika, so there was a bit of an adjustment in terms of the workflow, but i am getting used to it. Overall shot quality is much better because of the consistency at the group head as well as the temperature. Steam pressure is greatly increased so I had adjust my technique with the milk.
@@christopherschmitz1804est ce que vous voulez dire 5min,30sec merci
I get great pressure profiling and comparable results with the Cafelat Robot. Less than a tenth of the price, no heatup times/descaling/servicing/noise/use of counter space. If I was going for a machine, I don't know why one would choose a 'You' over a LaMarzocco Mini or Micra 🤔 or if you're after profiling, a Decent DE1 or a Lelit Bianca
To each their own. I would much rather have the sanremo over all of those.
Different machines for different needs. The La Marzocco machines are great, but they are also very expensive and have a lot fewer features than this machine.
Definitely agree as this trend with technology trying to offer precision & consistency will be a downfall in many ways. I like to keep machines for many years and wouldn't totally trust the parts some of these things are being designed around.
Nice machine and indeed the future of pulling shots, being able to control every aspect. Being a recent Decent owner, I know the Sanremo UI is not great; too many screens to set, and where is the shot visual output? Does it upload the results anywhere? Assuming you can connect via a Bluetooth scale and stop at the desired weight. There is a massive advantage to using a tablet or bigger screen and a good UI. Good attempt by Sanremo, but it's pricey and needs improvement.
I understand adjusting the steam rate; the Decent is by flow rate and had to go from 2.2ml to 1.9ml ;-).
I need to get a Decent to play with next.
A two year master's programme has been launched at the Oxford to teach operation of this coffee machine
🤣
My question would be how reliable is the YOU, say vs a GS3? Clearly the YOU wins hands down on features and control, but be comparison to, say, LM or GS3, how does reliability stack up?
Nice looking ornate cup. Where to buy?
Take a look at my video about them. It's one of only 10 in the world!
So now you must have a Ceado whit variable motor drive. Right!
I wish! 🤣
I almost bought one, because it has everything I want in a machine. However, the dealer explained that it should be on all day, which is not what I want. Also, it has a very loud fan, which was a dealbreaker for me. Still looking for a machine that can fill the gap of not buying, though…
There are so many machines out there right now, it's hard to know what to buy. You don't have to have it on all day, but if you're having drinks in the afternoon as well as the morning, it's cheaper to leave it on 😅
I have my endgame machine, ECM Classika II PID with flow control plus a blind shaker and a happy tamper, that's it, everything else has been sold or tossed aside from the grinder obvs.
45-55 seconds is my sweet spot pulling a lazy boy on my E61. What's a lazy boy you say? Set flow very low around 2.5-3ml/s, grind fine and be patient.
where did you get the espresso cups?
That one is my dexem cup. I have a video about it!
thats why you need the decent machine. the computer will do your shot for you based on the profile you choose. So you wont need that rocky road at the beginning.
I was trying to do custom ones from the start 🤣
What kind of cup is that in Minute 9:54?
Check out my video about it. One of only 10 in the world. It was a gift when I left Japan 😎
@@homecafecharlie Just watched the Video about the cups. Astonishing work... They are absolutely gorgeous! And you achieved your goal: They certainly are conversation starters. :-) Have a happy new year!
@@tobzen7682 Thank you! You too!
Hey Charlie! Have you ever heard of infrared roasted coffee?
I have but I haven't gone much past the word. I'll look into it, sounds interesting!
Thanks for taking the time to produce this review. I’m debating between the YOU and a La Marzocco GS/3 MP. I appreciate that this is much less wasteful than the GS/3’s conical valve, which constantly pumps at 9 bars of pressure and routes any unnecessary water into the drip tray (for example, if attempting 3 bars of pressure at the group, the remaining 6 bars of water will be channeled as waste into the drip tray during the shot). But they both seem like excellent machines. The biggest risks on the YOU, as others have pointed out, will be ongoing software and community support and potential resale value. Having a computer as a key component on the machine will clearly date the machine after several years, unlike the GS/3 MP which will be fairly timeless as a mostly mechanical machine. Tough choice!!!!
I don't think it's worth worrying about water waste with espresso machines. They are all very similar. The main thing is how will it feel like to use, and what do you want to get out of one that you might not be able to get out of the other. Both great machines!
Go for LM GS/3 if output has priority.
What does the fan do?
I have no idea 🤣 it rarely comes on. Probably fixed already by a software patch
OK, what this thing can do that DE1 cannot? Other than steaming and brewing in the same time...
That's a big one if you're making a lot of drinks 😎
@@homecafecharlie if you make a lot of drinks you need commercial multi-group machine and do not have time for profiling every drink. What else? What it can do in environment it's designed for that DE1+ cannot do?
@@cybernessful That's the beauty, you can profile the drink once and then let the machine do it! 😍
Are you buying it for the new shop?
No, just borrowing for the video. We need a 2 group for the shop
@@homecafecharlie Exactly, you need to be ready for a quick business success 💪🏻🙏🏻💪🏻
So how good are these machines? Build quality. Longevity? How long has the company been in business? Between a GS3 MP as it has a serious history
Build is solid and Sanremo is a big and well known company. I can't attest to the longevity of this machine though. It's more feature rich than a GS3, but LM machines are built like tanks (that also need maintenance). Honestly I can't think of an espresso machine that doesn't need consistent maintenance to last a long time.
The only thing I dislike greatly about this machine is that from every store in aus it’s 9k plus. If I buy it overseas it’s 7k plus. For the price and performance it’s in the Faema range of their newest machine. Yes it offers a little more but I think they should have worked harder on the price as there’s no chance I’ll pay near 10k for it…
That totally makes sense. I'd love to try out the Faema too!
This is my fist time seeing this guy reviews. I thought I'm gonna enjoy watching him when he said that Sanremo lent him the machine. His review was just shots of his face blathering and not enough video footage to support what he's on about. Got to half of the review and couldn't finish.
😵💫
Your fireplace mate. Corrr
Love it!!! 😍
Can’t they make the screen color for ease of use?
Never mind. It seems the screen is color.
Lol I found it quite easy to read
Great video! can you add timestamps pleasee
On paper, it looks great and got potential to outperform most of the E61 group head machine as well as GS3, but I'm not sure it's good enough to face off against Decent as that's the real Endgame machine currently. Hopefully can get a comparison between these 2 models.
I would LOVE to do that comparison. Maybe with the Synesso ES1 as well (coming out next year)
'Endgame' varies in many ways though as I personally won't tolerate a machine having so much interface to get in the way. Like some machines requiring the use of apps just to make brew temp changes. That's a bit ridiculous and has no real world guarantee with longevity & reliability. I will say it's hilarious to watch all the modern fads that are still trying to catch up with what the manual lever has been doing for going on a century now. Technology will never surpass some things in life that simply work.
The Decent is (for me!) a way superior machine, no question... the lower Decent price its a hughe bonus
Aesthetically, that is a sext espresso machine!
It looks awesome 😎
You used a DiFluid Scale
Good spot! I'll talk about the DiFluid refractometer and scale when the app is available on android
If you're spending over £6k on a home coffee machine ... you're probably not appreciating the value of things in general lol. I can see £2k-£3k maybe but £6k for home machine... how can it be much better than an ECM, Profitec, Rocket etc? It certainly doesn't look as good. Its a good review of it though so thanks
I believe the machine is too overpriced. The display screen is not big enough for everyone and speaking of functionality & ease of maintenance, I will prefer Decent.
Try the Decent Espresso machine. That’s a real machine. The plastic of the „you“ look very cheap.
I'd love to pick up a Decent but I just moved back from Japan and money is tight while I invest everything I own in my coffee shop. Maybe next year 😜
This is by no means cheap. The only plastic components are the screen (naturally), the screen frame and the drip tray inlet. Everything else is stainless steel, powder coated metal or aluminium. You can switch the knobs to different types of wood. Sanremo offers a customization kit for this (also including magnetic wood or customizable leather covers for the side panels).
@@homecafecharlie end - game home espresso machine, I would only call one of the following (Rocket R Nine One, Synesso MVP Hydra One, Slayer Single Group, La Marzocco GS3)
@@Kats072307 I’d consider all of those machines "boutique". Well built but not that great in terms of performance. Hydra, GS3, R9 all are pressure-profilers, which I find quite limiting compared to flow-profiling. The Slayer style shots are fundamentally uneven and not that great. The GS3 paddle in particular is very finicky and poor UI.
You can getter results than any of those with most E61 machines and needle valve.
6000... I rather pay less without the automation
overpriced, and the digital display ruins the overall aesthetic. This and the Slayer are out to price gouge to consumer. Home espresso machines need to be analog because all digital displays will be dated every few years. Andrew Meo had it right with ROCKET
Depends what you want. I love playing around with all the extra stuff 😎
This video attracted so many DECENT trolls willing to sell the idea that they have the best machine . Most of them will upgrade to the San Marco YOU at some point.
We'll see. Synesso is bringing out the ES1 this year too. Obviously more data and information is gonna be big in espresso space 😍
@@homecafecharlie Yes and as at March 23 there is still no indication of price nor availability which is odd. I have purchased a San Remo YOU to replace a very solid Vesuvius. Thanks for the video review
@@chrisp.916 Price indication for the Synesso ES1 is beyond 10k € at least in Europe based on importer's estimates.
@@christopherschmitz1804This is way to high for the technology they offer
@@chrisp.916 Well, we have not seen the ES1 launch yet. Until then enjoying my YOU.
Those machines with too much electric components are not reliable. Too many things that can go wrong or be faulty. The best machines are those made with hig quality materials and no much electronics unless you are willing to spend more money in repairs than the value of the machine. No good.
Really depends. Plenty of Breville models are more reliable than LaMarzocco home machines for example.
Normally really love SanRemo machines and they make some absolutely beautiful pieces of art that make espresso. But I think this one is quite ugly
Its ugly af
*covers its ears* He didn't mean that sweetheart... 😘
