Who remembers fighting extra hard in battle right after the scene Dom had to kill his wife? Teenage me hated grubs so much after that. Gears 2 story was really good
I saw nothing but red after that, even got the cut mission
I won't lie, Benjamin's death. Before hand I was efficient, focusing on headshots and keeping my distance, Benjamin's death shook my core, my friend straight up told me to calm down, I'd rush in, changing my Hammerburst and Longshot, to Shotgun and Lancer. Lowkey this damn game series caused me to feel hate towards a fictional faction. Love this series.

@@peanutpaste1402 i got blood thirsty after Doms death. My dad and I already had the feeling his wife was dead, we were surprised to see her alive but after Tai we were like "no way she survived"
This happened right before the DLC where you can disguise yourselves as Theron Guards and you can 'sneak' but nah, after all that, it's guns blazing.
Someone had once told me that Tai had killed himself to free his soul from his body as per his cultural beliefs. Apparantly if your body is broken by trauma or disease they're meant to free themselves from it. Never fact checked anything on it, it's just a bit I heard once upon a time.

I feel like it potentially diminishes the impact that scene is supposed to have.
Tai was introduced as a stoic, spiritual yet hardened individual. He could take a lot and bounce back up. The decision to off himself was supposed to showcase just how brutal the Locust were, that even a guy like Tai would choose suicide from the experience.
I suppose it doesn't completely negate that idea, but it certainly changes the focus of the decision.
@@biggrayalien4791 I don’t feel it takes away because like he said to be put into the position where you felt you were forced to do that, you’d have to have been completely physically and mentally broken.

@@benben3277 Tai's expressions in his final moments was not one of a faithful, whole man just carrying out his cultural beliefs. He was a shell of what he used to be I don't think it's mutually exclusive for Tai's cultural beliefs being that BUT he actually killed himself because of the trauma of facing such brutality not really thinking about adhering to his beliefs in those final moments he just wanted to end his pain.
I hope this game one day blows up again and people start drawing fanart and giving it way more love then at its peak

ersonal life spilled into the game and you cant argue the results but i never understood how a game would get so much hype release be a great game still to this day and the support would fall off pretty quickly with only really 1 dlc and it was great just think if cliff and his crew done more for each game like raams shadow instead of maps i think that is why they didn't have staying power for some hell i still play 3

It would be great, but with a studio dedicating themselves to retconning character development and plot in favor of a Strong Woman™️ as the protagonist that they make sure you remember is a woman every few minutes, I’m gonna guess not
Being killed on the first day of the locust invasion would be merciful compared to enduring 17 years of whatever hell that comes after E day.
I always try to imagine a scenario where I somehow survived E-Day if it ever happened to us and I’ve yet to think of a scenario where I do 😭 I’m dead on day one
@ThaGravedigger same here I'm able to kill a few of those lil wrech things but then I get stepped on by a brewmack or get my arms ripped off by a regular locust or blown up by a ticker, death would be inevitable for me.

The music in that scene is perfect. The way it builds up more and more tense only to drop into silence at the crucial moment.

@@zroberts02 Dom wanted to die. Having to put his own wife out of her misery almost broke him. He wanted to be with his wife, but didn’t want to just kill himself, he knew his death had to have purpose so as to not be selfish and just abandon his friends. So when he sacrificed himself to save his friends, he got his wish.
Man finding Maria brought me to tears when I first played Gears 2. You'd hear mission after mission how much Dom misses her and the stories he would tell, only for him to find her in that state. The only thing close to that was Dom's death in 3.
Dom's death in 3 hit me in the chest like a berserkers tits. Had me in fuckin tears.

That birthing farm thing was so brutal it was almost out of place in gears. Very little talk about sex in the series compared to other adult dark fiction(berserk for example) and then BOOOM fetuses in jars and child **** with no happy ending
It make sense in the Gears universe due to the cog fighting a 79 year war and than fighting the locust horde, humanity population had to be so low because of that

I swear, the Birthing Creche was the most disturbing discovery that I made about the COG reading the comics. It's even more disturbing if you think about the fact that every single woman in the COG showed in the First Trilogy was steryle, and that's the only reason why they're in the main plot.

@@andrewt.7555 Not exactly. Anya had a son with Marcus thanks to a specific medical treatment, part of the Fertility Program developed After the end of the locust war. The Program was unstable, in fact Anya died trying to conceive a second son, and that's why tu Program got suspended.

The last mission in gears of war 2 was so good damn they don't make it like the original 3 anymore
I never knew about some of these. Worst ones imo are the forced impregnation of both sides, the Coalition and the locust were doing that, and the torturing. Tai killed himself and he's a beast of a man. Can't imagine what it would be like for a random citizen in that universe..
I mean we did get a glimpse of a civilian being processed with Maria. God that scene still hits like a freight train.

Just had a thought: Remember how Baird and Paduk talked about what happened to Sofia, and Paduk said she was abducted by some guys wearing COG tags?
What if Sofia was fertile and the government wanted to put her in a Birthing Creche, so she deserted and went looking for Paduk? Only for some gears to track her down and drag her back, either out of loyalty to the COG or because they wanted a turn with her at the Creche?

cant be the case since she left the cog WITH paduk and didnt leave it looking for paduk as .it was implied that they were romatically inolved so they decided to leave together. like Baird said "what about sofia i heard she left the cog to be with you". but the writers did say they left it up for interpretation
@@prodigen3683 I thought that dialogue implied Paduk had already left the COG before Sofia deserted? The writers left a lot of details about her fate vague in case they want to bring her back in another game someday, which I hope they do.

I always thought it was morbidly funny that when Dom euthanizes Maria, he goes for the fucking BOLTOK. A weapon known for popping heads like watermelons dropped off a building.
It couldve been a Snub, or one quick shot with the Lancer, or a swift knife to the base of the skull. But no, he chooses the Boltok that would completely behead her and cover himself in her brains. At point blank range lol. Idk if Im the only one that thinks thats darkly hilarious.
On the bright side she can't be used for bloodmount chow.
Didn't RAAM execute a Gear with a Boltok?
@@mechalapod5901 yea pretty sure he did lol. My only guess as to why the devs chose the Boltok there is so you would hear the loud dramatic gunshot off screen. They didnt want to show her death. But they couldve shown Dom drawing a knife and then cut away and have her death be heavily implied. At least he didnt pull out a Boomshot.

The scene where Dom euthanizes his wife is so heart wrenching, not just because of what Dom had to do, but because you see Marcus pause after the first shot to wait and see if a second shot rings out.
I actually never thought about the cremation that much and it makes a lot of sense! Really great video man, very useful for those who are looking to get to know about the lore of the gears franchise! Keep being awesome man, much love 💙

Actually realizing what Dom went through when finding Maria is mind changing. Having to shoot the one you love the most in such a dramatic, well played out plot is so attention grabbing it's crazy. Gears of war 2 will forever be the best story for any game in the series.
I always loved how GOW shows how Humanity will recklessly abandon it's traditions and humanity for the sake of survival.
I'll be honest, I was expecting something unexpected akin to someone getting freaky with a locust...since I already knew all this things about the lore
Easily one of the most heartwrenching series I've had the pleasure of growing up with. Many developers have shown their own renditions of war but the Coalition took its horrors to an entirely different level. A world consumed and shaped by war like no other.
When Abz started to talk about the Birting Creche, I was like:
"Wait is he telling Gears of War lore or Warhammer 40K lore?"
I'm new to Warhammer 40k. Like, REALLY new to the lore. They have breeding programs like Gears of War did? Was it worse than Gears?

Man one thing they really nailed in Gears 2 was the soundtrack. The music did such a good job of making the player feel like a gear in an ever shrinking army fighting against increasingly impossible odds, knowing that they are the last thin line of defense against extinction. Mainstream games today just cannot accomplish the same feats.
Yes definitely! The aura and the official soundtrack really helped encapsulate the world that you’re in
At least there was that one Gear in one of the Comic's, during operation Hollow Storm(Hollow S#%tStorm) was able to be some of the very few probably, to break out and escape from the Hollow, but only to meet his demise after words before he could even get back to forward base.
And side note that would make kinda of a good character in Gears 6 or a prequel game of a Gear who managed to escape the Hollow and allow its horrors as a P.O.W and live to tell the tail and maybe along side with other P.O.W's.
There are so many aspects of horror in gears of war, i know its highly regarded for its action but I gotta say at points it works fantastically as a horror game due to the bleak atmosphere setting and scenes some of em just give off this longing sense horror and dread
Both Maria's and Dom's deaths were some of the saddest of any video game series I've ever witnessed.
Saddest thing i realized awhile ago Marcus was waiting for 2 gunshots in that scene

I really with the newer gears continued with the gritty morbid story and art style gears 1-3 had. The newer games took a really big shift that I’m not a huge fan of.

The story telling and great punchlines from 1-3 are also nowhere to be found coalition pretty much killed the whole franchise.

I see what you mean, but you have to keep in mind that in Gears 4 and 5, the humans pretty much have rebuilt, so it wouldn't be gritty and dark as it should be. I wonder how it will be like for the 6 installment meant. It's been a bit, but the ending of Gears 5 kind of gave the sense of the gritty and dark tone of it imo

@@KingAbzTV Update: I've bought gears of war 2 and 3, I'm halfway through gow 2 (im at the ruined city part) and I LOVE IT so far, it's so damn fun, I love benjamin carmine, the whole game is soooo fun. I couldn't stop myself from trying out gears 3 multi and beast, i liked those so much i completed all 12 waves of beast on casual on my first time - legendary games!

I get the need to re-populate after having a massive chunk of your species get wiped out. But the COG could've done that in a better way
A remake of the first gears of War as more of a 3rd person survival horror game would b really cool imo, the first gears had a really dark and kinda scary feeling that the later gears just didn't hav. I was actually kinda scared of the locust in the first and the berserker scene is one that emphasizes that Sci-fi horror feel it had.
This is something ive been saying for ages. Could be a horror series spin-off set during the first few months, years of the locust war

I still remember how good the gears series was 1 through 3. Always improving there gameplay and adding great content through story and gameplay with each passing title. Not a huge fan of the series after the main 3 but glad that the gameplay still remained great.
I enjoyed the gritty horror atmosphere injected with nonstop 🔥 action and hopelessness wtf happened with 4/5 by the way fighting robots suck

Top tier fucked up was in the light novels how they decided to recall all gears and use the hammer of dawn on entire cites a crash and burn tactic to help increase their odds of winning. The aftermath was in the third game when we meet griffin. It’s sad that we find out later the entire time COG they did it to themselves trying to win the pendulum wars cost them in gears 6 when they find out the truth of the locust.
Gears 2 gets overlooked so much it’s crazy. Hard to believe when it improved upon the first installment in literally every way. Spent hours playing that campaign with my little bro.
I've been replaying through Gears Of War again starting from Gears Of War to Gears 5 and I forgot how much I love the series

Gears 5 wasn't bad as a video game, but as a gears game, it lacked darkness and seriousness.
I found myself falling into the Gears rabbit hole again since I finally played the first and second games and I’m playing Judgement (thanks Game Pass) I played Gears 3 A LOT when I was younger (heck, my dad had gotten it and the guide, got it on launch day). Me and my brother played it a lot and we loved the Carmines and Delta. I had played Gears 4 and 5 too but I’m going to revisit them as I’ve not played them in years

I was only a kid when playing these games so the weight of the scene with Dom and Maria is something else now.
I remember being really confused about why Tai would kill himself as a kid. Knowing what I know now, I think I understand a little bit better.

I have my issues with the fact that they didn’t end after three but can we all just take a minute to reflect on how sad Dom’s story was…. Still can’t play his death without crying… Original trilogy was so good!
This is all old school gears lore. It used to be just as dark and depressing as 40k. It wasn’t just about scary monsters, humanity had to become genuine fascists to just scrape by with their own existence, because otherwise they’d go extinct.
None of the new games come even close to that sort of Grimdark atmosphere.

It was almost directly stated in the first game, though you might've misheard it. When the first berserker screams, Baird says "She can hear us. She can SMELL us." Berserkers are the only female locusts in the game.
The Locust were like a combo of Mordor and Imperial Japan…. Geeze.

I think out of all of these, the Birthing Creche is the worst of them all. Reminds me of another birthing program that happened in real life history.
I feel like gears 2 really cranked up the darkness with the series, the locust were mysterious in the first game with them just being monsters with guns and the community wanted to know how they came to be and how evil they were so epic was like "sure ok so they're actually a disgusting mutated hybrid of human and animal and they basically skin people (and like children too) alive just cause they find it amusing. Love this world and series, just hope gears 6 is more like halo infinite
Gears hands down is one of the best Multiplayer games ever created.
The scary part is, humans would actually resort to such things should a similar event happen on earth.
