I second that as an Arab ex-Muslim as well. You are absolutely right and most of those women covering their bodies and face don't know all the details. YES, it was meant to have clear distinction between " ahrar " = free women that are wives and daughters of free Muslim men. AND, " Jawary " = women slaves. The slaves didn't have the right to cover themselves, and one of them did, and Omar told her, Someone rescued you ( paid the money to get you out of slavery ) ? she said, no, still a slave, and then he asked her to remove the veil from her head, and she didn't want, maybe, she wanted to be dressed like free women ( the boss ), and then, he hit her on the head and removed it himself, and told her, never cover your face again. This is a true story from Sahih Al Bukhari, the most authentic book of Sunni Islam

Because the women are not allowed to grape and take sex slaves. It all started when one of the Prophets yes men saw one of the Prophets wives going to the toilet. "I see you!" He said. He then went to the prophet and said something creepy and how Allah must reveal something about covering women. Funny enough, nearly the next day Allah mysteriously said the women should bring a thick veil when using the toilet. That extrapolated into "covering her ornaments all the time". Robbing women of agency, a unique public identity and confining them like prisoners to the home allows the men to freely objectify and dehumanise and marginalise women. Men must cover their bodies too, with pure fabrics which is why they wear the kaftan and usually do not wear short sleeves or short trousers. As the prophet aged and his Harem got younger and hotter, the disciples offered to wed them after his death. The prophet became more paranoid about this, and Allah then told the disciples not to wed his wives. Douglas could in theory be in the home with a woman not his wife if he breast feeds several times from the wife. Because that would make him "as her young male child in her eyes". This is the miracle of bad psychology.

@@markhepworth the fact that a huge part of non-muslims think what you say doesn't make it a reality.
According to the Quran nobody can't be forced to anything, hijab included...
Muslim men must cover navel to knees
(that's their 'awrah) while women must cover their whole body except their hands & faces (that's our 'awrah). In times of fitna, face covering is also mandatory.
Hijab is mandatory in Islam for woman (is a command from God to us) but can't be forced by people, each woman must decide if she follows God's command or not.

I was born and raised in NYC. Not only is this fave covering “undesirable” and “discomforting” as Mr Murray stated… it is outright SCARY!!!! In my personal view… when you see a single woman or even a group walking down the street in ALL BLACK covered from head to toe, tied off, eyes barely visible.. as an adult woman it evokes a fear in me. You don’t know who and what is under there… having witness this for years, I still can not get acclimated this. Not to mention what small children must feel - outright terr0r! I’m not trying to be mean, or out anyone down, we do live in a free society… but just like other non-standard groups scare me on the streets of nyc… this one does as well.

There was a talented Iranian physician named Homa Darabi who committed suicide by setting herself on fire in a public protest against the oppression of women in Islamic Iran. She did this after a 16-year-old girl was shot to death for wearing lipstick. In the book, Why We Left Islam, her sister includes a direct quote from one of the country's leading clerics:
"The specific task of women in this society is to marry and bear children. They will be discouraged from entering legislative, judicial, or whatever careers which may require decision-making, as women lack the intellectual ability and discerning judgment required for these careers."
