Regan:

Most people miss what is going on in this scene. In short, the devil is playing with him in order for him to have doubts about the possession, to draw him in closer. The devil uses basic Latin phrases she could have learned in church and responds to his question of "What is my name," in French. It's french any school girl could have learned, the term "the aunt of my pen" is like donde esta la biblioteca (where is the library) in Spanish. A useless phrase people her age would learn in basic French class. Also she responds to the tap water as if it where real holy water, it was not as shown in the next scene. The devil uses doubt and lies to corrupt. He wants the father's soul for the father is a priest with doubts. This battle is played out through out the film.

joelp77440 That's all well and good, but this isn't the devil. The Mesopotamian demon known as Pazuzu is the spirit possessing Regan.

If I were a priest, I would have recommended an exorcism after looking at Regan for a few minutes, and especially after hearing her voice. That's all the proof I would need.

I first saw the Exorcist back in 1984, when I was 10 years old. I was at my cousins' house, and they had it on VHS. Of all the scenes in the movie, it's the one where the demon opens the drawer that sticks out the most. When the demon responds to Father Karrass, "Ah,haaaaa,hhhhhhnnn"....well, it's just freaky and disturbing. So simple, yet so demonic.

Well it was more that my parents left a VHS in the video player and when I played it, it was on that scene when he sits down and she makes that groaning noise. I switched it off quickly 😂😂

In the French dub, "La plume de ma tante" is replaced by "My tailor is rich", which is the equivalent of "La plume de ma tante" for the French kids who start learning English.
she does say things in latin and french that she could have heard somewhere without understanding what those things mean in order to counter her meeting criteria for exorcism set forth by the catholic church such as fluently speaking in a language she has never heard before. yes, she's speaking a language she doesnt know but anyone could ramble off a few phrases they hear without knowing what those phrases mean. the demon speaks basic phrases in latin and french, but in the same scene the demon makes a drawer open without touching it. while the priest wasnt really directly looking at the drawer, regan's body is completely bound up. so on the one hand, she does meet the criteria for exorcism by opening the drawer while on the other is able to cast doubt on the whole thing by saying rudimentary phrases any kid could learn. in this way, you can see the demon is making clever usage of subtleties as if it knows what the priest is looking for. father karras is as evidenced by his advanced education a very intelligent person, however the demon is able to get under his skin as you will see later in the movie as its sole purpose is to be an asshole.
This is correct. There’s a lot going on in this short scene. She answers his Latin question with a meaningless phrase in French, and mocks him by evading his question after he turns the recorder on, as well as opening a drawer-something the audio recorder will not pick up.
In the book, Karras still dismisses it. It was written in the early 70's and Psychic abilities were all but confirmed to a good portion of even the Psychiatric community. Therefore he dismisses it as a random psychic phenomenon brought on by hysteria. Ironically, these days, it would be easier to convince many of the same community, and the public, that a demon had possessed her than of psychic phenomenon brought on by hysteria.

pazuzu is at his best when he's just being a dick. that's the brilliance of this film. you get moments like these that are funny, but the comedy is part of what makes it so scary. this is all just a game to him.
Idk why this interaction leading up to 0:38 to me feels weirdly warm. Warm because of Pazuzu itself, definitely not, but rather because it wreaks of the warming, nostalgic feeling of a classic old film. I'm a horror specialist exclusively but my whole life, I've grown up as a huge fan of older cinema, specifically the 70s-90s (and maybe 2000s) for me, giving me that vibe of how I saw these films in a so much more glorious and ethereal light than any of the thick, too modern-looking cinematographic atmospheres of movies today. This moment echos to me the same feeling I got from growing up obsessed with another 70s horror classic, JAWS, and it truly makes me appreciate this movie even more. Also 100th comment!

"La plume de ma tante" is actually a colloquial French phrase meaning "vagina."

In Classical Latin yes, but “quod nomen mihi est” is a perfectly acceptable albeit later way to say the same thing.
