The only criticism I have is the lack of emphasis on the proper use of PPE. There is just no excuse for not wearing safety glasses when using an angle grinder. Even the very highest quality grinding and cutting discs shatter sometimes. Also, a major occupational hazard of welding is skin cancer. Even for a tack one should be wearing the proper PPE.

My biggest concern with needing to unbolt panels to get to the engine is fire risk- What if you have a fuel leak or something electrical going wrong and you need to get at it fast? (Which has happened to you all). In my humble opinion I think it would behoove you to set the side panels up on some type of a latch system of like on some heavy equipment so you can unclip/unlatch something and pull the panel off quick. Not to mention it make checking the oil and adding fluids much easier. 🤷‍♂️

    • @jmmiller9

My wife and I miss Lizzie - but are looking forward to Caitlin’s journey. Having a new person learning everything from scratch is a great way to reintroduce the channel and attract a new audience. Nothing makes someone want to try something more than watching someone new do it - along with the inevitable mistakes. We love the way this channel unabashedly shows even the mishaps as learning experiences. “Good enough” is often faster and more valuable, time wise, than a perfect brand new install. Think high grade trail repairs to get things moving, making money, and helping rescue people versus all the downtime to do a full garage based retrofit. Doing it without the perfect thousand dollar tool (claw hammer to the rescue) makes it even more relatable to the average person. Love the channel!

If you get a fire in the engine bay, the only way to use an extinguisher is by going over the radiator. And it won't work that well because you probably won't be able to point at the source. Maybe try latching the side plates (like on ammo boxes). Then you can get them off quickly and have a clean shot.

Here's a thought for engine access - hinge the top of the engine bay sides (with the black vents) so they fold up flat against the rail, then attach the bottom with a couple of Dzus 1/4 turn fasteners. No tools needed to get access if you have any engine trouble on the road - and no loose bolts to lose in the mud and glop.

Learning on the job can be tough for some, and learning on the job, while on camera, for tons of people to watch, would probly be impossible for most people. I do hope she gets some hard-toed boots and her hair pulled up tight though cause it’s so easy to get hurt when you’re just starting out on stuff like this since your brain is focusing so hard on learning and practicing your technique. I grew my hair long for the first time ever in my life recently and it’s crazy how much it can get caught in stuff and I’ve had to learn the hard way to get it up out of the way and tied tight.

I think it is fantastic that you are showing and teaching Kaitlyn the finer skills of welding and telling her why you do that method.. some people just say do this, do that, but do not say why you need to do things that way.. I'm glad that you finally told Kaitlyn about her long hair and it needs to be up when in the workshop.. Everyone needs to be aware of those kinds of risks when in a workshop. Happy belated Birthday Colin.

Growing up my dad owned a paint and body shop. Everyone thinks welding thin metal and body panels is an easy thing. In reality it is, if you are doing it properly.
I learned to cheat to some degree (as did many others). I put my panels that needed spot welding together using self tapping screws and allowed the seam sealer to cure. Then I would unscrew each screw and do my spot weld. I got a factory finish everytime.
I really enjoyed doing flush metal filler panels. The only way you could do that when I was a kid was with finess and magnets to hold the new blank in place. My goal on every job was a finished product with little to no filler.

I am aware you can just google this stuff now days but if the net ever goes down " hope that never happens " you can teach another generation how to rebuild that last one . You should put some hinges on those yellow panels on the top and a magnet on that rail so that when you open it up it stick to that rack to check the fluids. I think you can get a quick release faster for the bottom so you can ether open it with your fingers or a screwdriver. To keep things from rattling you stick a line of sticky foam that is used in camper and RV doors to seal them up.

Just a suggestion from an old guy. When you're cutting with a plasma/cutting torch or welding it helps to have yourself rested against something that's not hot. This advise is for right handed people. Rest your left elbow/arm or even shoulder against something, use your left hand to support/ steady your right hand/wrist. Or just use left had against something supporting your right hand/wrist. Just standing next to something without touching it somehow you tend to kind of "wobble" and things tend to get crooked. Just advise, take it for what it's worth.

But you slow down and take the extra time and patience needed to pass along your skills..VERY NICE, they will take those skills forward the rest of their lives and never forget where they learned them from.. Its what's missing in our society today. Employers expect everyone to just walk in with all the skills they need.

Cait!, just a little advice when it come to impact drivers and drills, most people get it wrong and just go full power on the trigger like it would be a gun, but if you gentle and press the trigger very slowly it will be alot easier to handle for tricky stuff like that long extension and articulated joint. basically you can treat the triggers like if they are a gaz pedal.
