The fictional character Spider-Man, a comic book superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and featured in Marvel Comics publications, has appeared as a main character in numerous theatrical and made-for-television films.
Nicholas Hammond first starred as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the 1977 made-for-television film Spider-Man and would appear as the character two other times. In 1978, the Toei Company created a theatrical spin-off of their Spider-Man television series, with Shinji Todō reprising his role as Takuya Yamashiro / Spider-Man. By 1999, Sony Pictures Entertainment had acquired the film rights to the character, creating two film series until 2014: the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy of films (2002-2007) starring Tobey Maguire as the character, and the Marc Webb Amazing Spider-Man films (2012-2014) starring Andrew Garfield in the role.
In February 2015, Disney, Marvel Studios, and Sony made a deal to share the Spider-Man film rights, leading to a new iteration of Spider-Man being introduced and integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The deal allowed Sony Pictures to continue to own, finance, distribute, and have final creative control of the solo Spider-Man films, with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributing the films with his other appearances in a supporting capacity. Tom Holland portrays this version of Spider-Man, and has appeared in six films to date, from Captain America: Civil War (2016) to Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). In September 2019, following a brief stand-off resulting in the termination of the old agreement, Disney and Sony relented to fan outcry and reached a new agreement for Holland's version to return for future films such as another solo film, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) where he appears alongside Maguire and Garfield who reprise their roles in the film as supporting characters, and another team-up film. In December 2021, Feige confirmed that he and Pascal, along with Sony and Disney, are developing a fourth MCU Spider-Man film.
Plans for an animated Spider-Man film were officially announced by Sony in April 2015, which eventually became Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) from Sony Pictures Animation. Shameik Moore voices Miles Morales / Spider-Man in the film, along with various other versions of Peter Parker and alternate versions of Spider-Man from the multiverse also appearing. Sequels and potential spin-offs are planned.
The Spider-Man films have been generally well received. They have collectively grossed nearly $9.8 billion at the global box office, with Far From Home becoming the first Spider-Man film to gross over $1 billion worldwide followed by No Way Home, which became Sony's highest-grossing film of all time. Additionally, Into the Spider-Verse won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Laura Ziskin and Alvin Sargent ABSOLUTELY made a huge impact on Spidey and their contributions must never be undermined, however, film is such a collaborative medium that I cannot chalk the brilliance of the Spider-Man films up to just them. I would say Garfield probably captures the Spider-Man persona best while Maguire covers the darker more mature aspects of Peter best. All three actors have something different to offer to the role so you can’t help but love them all.

It took me years to acknowledge Spider-Man 3 was kind of a mess of a movie and Amazing Spider-Man 2 wasn’t great. I did have my doubts about Garfield and was disappointed there wasn’t a Spider-Man 4 but I loved every Peter when they made their debut.

You know, with all the restrictions, mandates, work arounds, and time crunches facing No Way Home, I respect the final product immensely. Yes, the Dr. Strange set up is undeniably sloppy but my gosh, does this film get the most important things right.
First off, a lot of people say the first 30 min are slow and boring but I love the start of this film. Seeing how the lack of anonymity and accusutions against him affect not just him but also the people he's closest to. It's full of great moments between Peter, May, Happy, MJ, and Ned. MJ and Peter's chemistry is the best it's ever been. The first 20 min is very effective in showing why Peter would seek out Strange's help. And no, it's not as shallow as "he didn't get into his dream college." They were hoping that moving away to college would provide reprieve from the constant harrasment they'd faced over the last several weeks in NY. I also appreciate that they make a point to stress that Peter isn't doing this for himself. He's motivated by his desire to see his loved ones' lives to go back to normal. He says it to Strange, then demonstrates this by reiterating to the admissions lady that his goal was to get MIT to reconsider Ned and MJ's applications, not his own.
It's unfortunate that the goal was getting all these characters back from their previous franchises, yet there was no narratively cohesive vision for how to accomplish this. Try and defend it all you want, Dr. Strange not bothering to brief Peter on the spell and then, without hesitation, jumping to the extreme of erasing everyone's memory, is incredibly sloppy and heavily strains suspension of disbelief. However, it's worth noting that this movie was originally supposed to come after Dr. Strange 2. It's possible they had to rewrite the setup because of that. Regardless, the way I look at it is this; if they were going to drop the ball in one area of this incredibly ambitious film, this is one of the most forgivable. It's a major flaw and one that, by objective measures, brings this movie down, but it's also one that can be easily overlooked without affecting the emotional core of this story.
The "fan service" is, for the most part, handled very well. There maybe a few too many pandering references to memes or ill-timed jokes but with a movie jam packed full of them, the misses are few and far between. Most of the humor and references are great and a joy to experience. (and I say this as someone who has no nostalgic attachment to the previous films) Doc Ock and Goblin are just as great as they were in there original movies. Electro's character gets overhauled but virtually no one is complaining about that and they do justify this change.
May and her "moral mission" were well built up and she earns the "with great power there must also come great responsibility" line. That's one thing that sets No Way Home apart in this uncle ben-esque scene. You really feel this line from May because she's been demonstrating that ideal throughout NWH. (and, to an extent, FFH) May's death is heartbreaking and credit to Holland's acting in this and the following scenes.
I could of course gush about Andrew and how he steals the show (in terms of acting and charisma) or all the amazing payoffs this movies gives several multiverse characters but to keep it short, it's a wholly satisfactory climax and love letter to the fans that expertly pays tribute to the previous incarnations of Spider-Man while never losing focus on whose story this is.
The ending is perfectly bittersweet and I can't wait to see the what's next for Tom Holland's Spidey. (That is assuming there will be another. Has anything been officially announced yet?)

There was no real reason for Dr. Strange to be that stupid and reckless with the spell other than him just being an arrogant character in general. But I’m okay with Peter being responsible for the mess he made because it was basically the start of his character arc. Maybe it’s a bit sloppy but much weirder/dumber stuff has happened in comics, so like you said I can easily overlook it. If that is people’s biggest criticism of the movie I think it is a really solid movie even without the nostalgia and fanboying because the emotional core of the movie is still there and I think that’s the most important thing. The emotion I felt from the end of the movie alone was enough for me to rate No Way Home as the best MCU movie with Guardians 3 just behind it. If I was being objective I might put Guardians 3 first but I am a hopeless Spider-Man fan boy so of course that has to be first.

I'm not going to pretend that the setup isn't a mess but I will happily go along with it because of everything this movie got right.
I'd push back slightly on this being Peter's fault though. Again, his motivation for going to Strange was helping his loved ones, not himself. Strange is the one who blindsighted him by saying "nice knowing you Peter" immediately before he starts casting the spell.

Okay I just finished watching the video. It was very good and agree with you for the most part. I don’t know how I didn’t notice the plot holes you pointed out about the death of Green Goblin. I think that is probably the most egregious part of the whole film. I’m just going to go with my head cannon that the the villains are from similar but different universes to the other Spider-Men like you said and there is no time travel involved. (By that I mean time passes by like normal despite them being out of universe. This assumes a a notion of absolute time that doesn’t exist in modern physics but this is superhero movie so I think that kind of logic is perfectly fine here.) I feel that is the simplest interpretation that allows to you to easily explain away everything and avoid complications with the universe we are already familiar with. It also gets around the idea that some of villains would be send back to die anyway like Doc Ock because I’m imagining Spider-Man just finds a way to drown the fusion reactor by himself. And Otto returns to an already saved New York. I’m more aware now of the things objectively wrong with this movie but I feel if you use your imagination you fix most of the issues it has surrounded Dr. Strange’s magic.

I think that plot hole can be explained that Otto figured it out because he used to work with Norman. So maybe he was part or talked to Norman about his experiments from the first film, and knowing about the glider he put two and two together. And as for sandman knowing, we don't know if he dies or not. He just blows away in the wind. So Norman as Green goblin could have been all over the news after Harry died and what happened to him and people found out how and linked the two.
So there isn't as big a plot hole. There's possible explanations

These three movies are fantastic I consider all of them 10/10 movies and not lightly either. From Civil war to no way home I still contend Tom holland felt the most like Peter and Spiderman with Andrew Garfield a very close second. I also understood the route they were going with Tom's Peter and why the complaints that he was simpy Iron man jr just baffle me, because he's not nor are the movies trying to imply that's the direction their going in. Infact Iron man himself admits he DOES'NT want Peter to be exactly like that and then his best friend confirms that to Peter in the second movie. And Civil war confirmed he made the whole Spiderman concept by himself all Tony did was make a proper version of it and never strayed from his idea.

There are a lot of aspects I love about far from home, and I think objectively as a whole I can’t say it’s a bad film by any stretch. I do have an issue with Mysterio’s portrayal. With Vulture, him being a disgruntled employee who got fucked over by Tony Stark is meant to enforce the theme of Peter forgetting, but eventually understanding the plight of having to protect the little guy and how big corporate mongols like Tony Stark just ignore the common folk. In the words of Batman, “while you’re flying over the streets, who’s on the ground saving them”. He’s a perfect foil for the idea of spider-man. However, I think Mysterio being a disgruntled stark employee doesn’t really offer many thematic benefits to the film, and moreso just created a missed opportunity for the film to delve into a more interesting backstory.

@@Alejandro333777 That makes sense for Sandman but how would the public find out after the third movie? Also that doesn’t explain how Otto would know about Norman being the Goblin. I feel the Rami adjacent universe thing is a simpler explanation because it also resolves the issue of time paradox’s too. Technically you could make it work if Otto and Norman come back to the Rami universe 20 years later but that would be bizarre and leave you with even more questions.

i firmly disagree on the portrayal of JJ in spiderman ps4 being bad, its very good. It combines the current narrative that he’s a washed up guy that’s been bashing the same angle into people’s heads forever. I think in the game it works because peter has been around for a while so its reasonable that jj would eventually become to be viewed as an alex jones type conspiracy theorist, not to say hes actually like the actual guy in his horribleness. Spider Man has been doing his thing in new york for years at this point likely saving at least a couple hundred maybe thousand lives, and JJ is still harping on this menace angle. Its clear in the game he isnt all bad having won 2 pulitzer prizes, so maybe at one point he was on to something. I do agree for the movie though it kinda just became too meta because all that context that makes it good in the game is stripped from the movie since toms peter is a totally different person. It was just like copying spiderman ps4’s homework at that point. I say all this just to say, Insomniac’s JJJ created a fresh new take on a classic character that is still very fitting in the verse, because in the gameverse JJ is likely just seen as a lunatic because of how much he’s been wrong.

Bad? Are you out of your mind? If you talk about bad, well, they're better than ASM2, or maybe SM3. At least Spidey is much more comic-accurate!

@mottom2657 By being an Iron Man fanboy, having a mechanical suit, Ned Leeds knowing his secret identity, or Aunt May being hot? Very comic accurate indeed. No Way Home just took pieces of a disaster and barely managed to salvage it.

@@gallifreyanknight1355I mean he can be an Ironman fanboy but the issue is he kisses up to Stark way more than any fanboy would.
He also doesn't seem balanced out because he is supposed to look up to both Tony and Steve and become the best versions of them.
That's one of the many things that make Spider-Man so cool.

The biggest complaint I've seen from the MCU Spider-Man movies is that Peter hardly faces any consequences from his actions as Spider-Man. Now aside from NWH being the obvious example of the writers taking that criticism and shoving it down audience's throats, I actually find that Tom's Spider-Man has the most realistic take on consequences. Like, yeah, Peter Parker being Spider-Man should have an effect on his personal life and vise versa...but I always found it odd that *everything* Spidey did would effect Peter's life. It just felt a bit off and less grounded. Not everything Spider-Man does will negatively effect or have any effect on Peter's life. That's like saying Peter will always be late for school because he saved a cat from a tree, or he misses a date with MJ cuz of stopping a mugging. Not every action someone does has a consequence, that's just really unrealistic. Idk, maybe I'm wrong and in the minority on this

What I hated the most about the first two movies is how they lean themselves on the bigger MCU movies that came before
And how much they surrounded Iron Man
Good thing the 3rd movie avoided that

    • @clarenceandgennymcneil251
      @clarenceandgennymcneil251 Před rokem

I agree that the first two relied too much on iron man but then the third did the exact opposite, relying heavily on pre established spiderman movies. Maybe this is a hot take but I would have preferred a peter on the run story similar to the the supposed original script but with scorpion, maybe he's the one who killed uncle Ben and when spiderman throws him in prison this builds the vendetta he has against spiderman. We can explore peter world through the eyes of a predator , who he can kill to get to his prey. Then maybe add a flashback to the night uncle Ben dies with Toby maguire casted as uncle Ben. At least that's how I would have done it.
