In January 2024 a friend and I took a trip to visit one of the premier bonsai exhibitions in the world. The Unión Del Bonsai Español - UBE is often referred to as the Spanish Kokfu.
The exhibition didn't disappoint and a video of it will follow in due course, but for me a highlight whenever I visit Madrid is being able to go to the most incredible home of Europe bonsai, Luis Vallejo Bonsai Museum.
With over 200 specimen bonsai created by true Japanese masters of the art such as Masahiko Kimura, Saburo Kato, Hiroshi Takeyama and Shinji Suzuki. But what is truly wonderful is there are so many bonsai in the collection that weren't only created by Luis Vallejo himself, but also collected from nature by his own hands back when such a thing was possible.
What can't really be shown fully in photos or in a video is the way the collection is displayed in the labyrinth like design built in 1995 and designed by Luis Vallejo in collaboration with the architect Antón Dávila.
I can't put in to words the feeling this place gives me each time I visit, and each visit is always too short. All I can suggest is going yourself and immersing yourself in this beautiful and ethereal place.
If you have a favourite bonsai in this video, please let us know which and at what time it's on the screen.
