- A nice chilly sunny November morning perfect for venturing out to explore the pine forest for fatwood! Now with fall nearing it's end. it is a great time to take advantage of the fallen leaves. Before fall there is green everywhere covering and hiding all that golden goodness! While my hunt for fatwood/pine knots started off slow and kinda so so, just as I was loading the car I spot the MOTHER LOAD OF HIGH OCTANE MI GOLD FATWOOD. ("High Octane" = Red pine fatwood with just the right age and richness)

I found a down pine last fall while I was hunting.The trunk was rotted to the point I could pull the knots out of it. And at the base was a root spike coming up from the ground. 8" in diameter and four feet long. I pulled all it and took it home and now I've got 92 pounds of high quality fat wood. Should last me a while, LOL.

You have me curious about what's happening in BC and you're worried might happen in your neck of the woods.
Apparently they are spraying stuff made by Monsanto that kills the hardwood but the conifers are resistant too. The are doing huge blocks of land so they can access the conifers easily for lumber. The problem is with the forest fires when they come into those areas...it's all resin and fatwood. Burns fast and deep. So there you have it *sigh* I'm not sure what to think. All I know is a lot are dying in my area from drought and bugs. Or are they spraying? But at least they are planting more. I remain hopeful. I love our forests more than anything 🌳🌲🌴🌵🌿

Nice video. I have a quistion for you: Why do you cut it straight of? If you cut it with a V down into the tree trunk you would get more fatwood out of every cut!

Fatwood can be found in any part of the tree. Stumps, tree tops, trunk, roots, branches, knots, bark... It depends on the tree.

I have purchased fatwood and used quite a bit of it, but only recently took the time to find out where it comes from --- and how to find it! I've never seen any quite as "rich" as you've shown here. Kinda like today's version of California gold dust!

Hey guys just letting you know that’s really really cool!… But you were leaving some really really big fat wood in those logs not just in the knots Put in those logs themselves are slammed full of it I ran into quite a bit not too long ago and I have tons and tons of it so for future reference get you a bigger saw and cut into those logs and I guarantee you those logs are slam packed! Hope this helps !!
Hey Shlisa ! I found some of those gray knots years ago and has em in a pile out back. I had 1 or 2 I’d use for starters. My sweety must have got tired of em and they disappeared. Got to go hunting again… what type of fero rod are you using in this video ?

question then... looking at the knot ball at 10:04 does the resin continue into the main trunk and get more concentrated? and if so is it worth the time to harvest that too or just too much work??
No, absolutely knot. I have spent too many hours trying to convince myself that it was worth it but it's not. It is really surprising how little is really left in there. Now if you are trying something like carving I have left the knot points on for aesthetics. That is what I call them. "Knot points" and I save them for camp fires. I get allot of loose knots on the ground and those are the one's that I am cutting the points off (unless they are decorative). If it is just getting processed for fires then who cares lol. And I cut them off before sending them out to people for lathe projects. Yeah, I have dissected a whole lotta trees in my days lol.
And the resin can go into the trunk but it's not always likely. Lightning or damage would make it do that for certain but it does not always run into the main trunk.
