Sat in the UK, rain bouncing off the van roof, break needed.... noise cancelling headphones on.... Sailor James uploads new video..... Life is sweet!! 😉
I love being in the van when it’s raining. Enjoy
While we are allowed to do it!!!
@@raymondpomfret4214 🤔sorry... What?
@@matttheflask it's in English, you no understand, let me know?
I was questioning when will we not be allowed to sit in a van while it's raining, seems unlikely to be outlawed.
Why do you watch such chilled videos when you're clearly an uptight prick? 🤔
The solo dinghy tug boat move was impressive!
Not a bad price! My schooner had a dry exhaust, I never regretted having that.
Huge relief seeing the old girl in such good shape again, James! Best content in the sailing channels.
Well done James, hope you don't have to rebuild it again any time soon!
Nothing shows confidence quite like moving an inboard engine into your boat in bare feet!!! Love it.
My thoughts exactly , Youd think hes from westport
You just made my Monday James. Thanks for the videos!
Good work ! found your channel a few weeks ago and have been catching up with your story , amazing videos and content ! you and Sam Holmes have been the straw that made me take the decision to sell my harley and get a sailboat instead =) keep up the great stuff and adventures !
Nice job, nice that you show how the help from a friend relief a ton of stress. We don't se it too much on sailing video, but when we live it , it make the day a wonderfull day !
I am very impressed at your ability to sail over long distances.. Diesels are known to run for decades with proper maintenance. Had your engine lasted a long time before you refitted in Los Angeles!
Now I understand why the Alberg seemed to have such high headroom! Kudos to you, not a task I'd like to have to do.
1:13 We have an old style boat as well and it has the same problem with following seas getting in to the engine through the exhaust. We have a shut off valve at the thru-hull where the exhaust exits the hull but it is difficult to get to so we don`t like to use it in case we need to start the engine fast. What we came up with for a solution is a "duck-bill" on the outside of the exhaust thru-hull. This is a simple funnel shaped ruberised canvas material sewn with the small end big enough to slide over the exhaust outlet. We attach this with a hose clamp and it just flops along in the water in a flat 'V shape'. When the engine is running the duck bill naturally opens and lets the exhaust out but when a wave hits from the stern the duck bill just folds over and water can't get in. We make the duck bill ourselves but we did have to epoxy a short pvc pipe to the outside of the exhaust so we have something to attach the duck bill to. Cheers
What wonderful people Dale and his lovely wife are! I really enjoyed watching your adventures with them. The camaraderie amongst cruisers is really refreshing. Glad the engine troubles are officially over!
Your experience or lack thereof is astounding. Yet you have made it 2/3 of the way around the world. Congratulations in the achievement. Your experience shows that with perseverance and little more a person can accomplish just about anything. I have watched all of your videos. They have been inspiring and educational. Fair seas to U
Excellent, mate! Respect and cheers, as always for your humility, experience, knowledge and for the way you help just us local, coastal sailors maintain our boats and just get out there and sail! We all share the same soul! Cheers, mister!
Wow!
That must have been a real exciting time..
Hey there's nothing like getting new components or a brand new instrument that's going to help.
With something so vitality important as a your life-saving yacht!
You're home...
I was really impressed!
Great video.
I've spent the whole day watching, it was kind of therapeutic! Hahaha!😆
Thanks again buddy..😁
Perfect music for the boat move
You’re The Man, again James!! Having gone through that exact experience and process, I know your level of satisfaction and accomplishment! Fair winds brother!
Great show one of a few real sailing shows out there
Totally inerstand the at the moment inconveniences or the unexpected 1000 dollar out of pockets. Your channel has inspired me , always loved sailboats, and owned a few small boats. Recently, I purchased a Southern Cross 31 and plan to do the ICW next fall from Connecticut to Florida and beyond. Best wishes and good vibes always
Can’t beat a fresh engine for boosting the confidence factor up a notch. Nice job.
Impressive engineering on the gantry!
Love the shirt, Ventura boatyard is awesome.
When you were moving the engine, I totally tensed up like I was helping. Haha.
I’m am absolutely obsessed with this channel now… I just bought my first sailboat 25ft 1984 Catalina
Wow. I’m exhausted just watching this. Mad props for getting it in dude.
So amazing, Sailor James. Both the scenery and the new rebuild.
Well do James and the sv womble good job cool to see you are ok pal
Love seeing all the silliness. Awesome
Wisdom comes after struggles. So good to absorb some of it from You. Feeling the love. Keep sailing it🎉
Amazing to see the engine back in and reinstalled!
Effort. Dillijjjence. Transparent in the build & install.
Really happy to see the new rebuild you deserve it
Thanks for this episode. You did a great job with the installation.
Loved watching this! We've all been there. Well done, sailor.
Great job James
Thanks for such an informative video!!! Glad you got the engine rebuilt!!!
Definitely seemed like a trustworthy shop! The price wasn’t bad at all. Considering it cost me over twenty thousand for an engine out overhaul in my semi truck.
Thank you for your pronunciation of our place names ❤️✨❤️
Good on the young lad that did the rebuild. Good job bud. Remember everything you can about the older stuff. It will carry you far.🇨🇦✌️🍻
It's so nice to see your videos again! Can't wait to see new adventures :)
Congrats brother ... glad to see it done ... I know you were sweating the install, but it seemed to go very well. On to the sea trials!!!
Good job Capt. !
Hi James, i call ya "jimmi jam" hey id like to throw ya some advice... Get a flat round magnet about 2 to 2.5 in across andplace on outside of motor under on oil pan next to drain, this willcatch flingsand such, remove before oil change then replace, it will make yur engine last much longer... this and Val voline, just the good stuff bro !!
That went well! Buena suerte!
Have been following your adventure for quite some time now. I have owned several sailboats, all small. My last was a Bayfield 32c. Not a famous brand but slow and solid. Keep meaning to get back to the ocean and may do that soon. Just saying that you are my in spiration. Not trying to creep you out but damn...I enjoy watching what you do. I feel my window for this closing as I have just passed my 73rd birthday, but heres hoping I ain't done yet. Especially enjoyed watc hing your interview with Holly. Amazing. Just know that you keep some of us full of hope that there is still more travels and adventures left before the lights go out.
Fair winds
Thanks again James for another awesome episode from the best sailing youtube channel out there
Thanks for sharing! Your lovely old girl is ready for the next adventure when you return. A lot of us look forward to that, for sure. I hope your 59 North adventure continues apace and you share some of that trip in future. Fair winds and seas that don't follow too close to that rebuilt diesel!!
Great job James, I bet that was an enormous relief to get that job done and Triteia is complete again and ready for more adventures. Congrats bro.....looking forward to the next phase as it were. Safe travels bro ☘
Nice to see you back on Tritea 🙂
Was looking forward to this video. It must have been hard waiting for your motor to be fix. Happy to see it fixed.
New subscriber catching up with you from the start. In the video of you on day 26-- about 11 months ago --- from Hawaii to French Polynesia... the quote is from Hank Williams... "No matter how hard you struggle and strive You'll never get out of this world alive!" I love your spirt....excellent video production....great philosophical sharing and inspiration James.
Gaskets are important, especially when they are mentioned, cause they add big value to the invoice.
Yo good to see you again. I missed a bunch and will go back to catch up but I love your repair/ installation stuff, everything else is so relaxing too!
Nice work.
What a relief that must be. Hope to see how you fill the new filters and line.
Love the safety shoes 🙂
Concentrates the mind wonderfully 😬 there really is a market for ultra compact light efficient simple engines like the Fluid piston rotary designs.
Well done James. It looks & sounds amazing. Happy motoring, (well, not too much motoring huh). Your friend Dale seems a real nice happy go lucky helpful guy. (Thanks Dale). Keep up the good work. SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍🏿
Sounded sweet
Thank you Sir.
Yeah mate excellent vid very informative
Cheers Thank you
this is great news James let the adventure continue.+
Love your videos! I never thought I’d like hearing an engine run as I did watching this video. Here’s to you. As Neil Young has said “Long May You Run”.
Great stuff team !
Whakatane NZ
Fine job
This is cool to see. The very first video I saw of yours was you installing that engine in your boat in LA! From there I followed you all along until you got to Hawaii, that was through a tough time for you with a last minute before you leave breakup that was painful (we could SEE it on you and hear it in your voice); then losing your rudder but FINDING a way to limp into harbor in Hawaii…. Amazing job!
But after Hawaii, my life switched up on me and I only watched the odd video here and there. Now I’ll have to go back and catch up for sure. But seeing this video with you once again installing this same engine back in after a rebuild is ironic. But I HAVE to say, this is a MUCH DIFFERENT man installing this engine. Damn you look SO MUCH healthier, happier, more at peace than the man doing this is an LA harbor. What an AWESOME sight to see really! I think the only thing that would make it better is if your brother flew in to help you scrape the bottom of boat after you finish the install! 😂 That would be really cool to see you and him diving under again!
Listen man, CONGRATS! You’ve obviously come very far here and your journey must have been so rewarding, it shines off of you! I’m gonna head backwards now to see what I’ve missed… have to try to binge a bit so I can catch back up to you. Well done! 🤠👍🏼☮️☮️
Congrats for a big step getting the engine sorted.
No comedy of errors my friend- just par for the course. Cruising is a living breathing, 3d flesh and blood dynamic Rubik's cube.... a problem solver's dream... navigating from one puzzle to the next.
Perfect response, laugh and get on with it.
Hi James, wow this must be a big Relief to have the diesel back in the boat , Happy sailing keep up the good work. Love your videos Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 from the big island 🏝️
Not sure if someone else has mentioned this but to high pressure bleed you can open the decompression levers at the top of the cylinders so the engine won't try to start while bleeding the injectors. It also makes it easier for the starter to turn engine without the compression on.. At least that works for me on my 2gm (not a 2gm20).
Cheers on the repairs!
The compression levers have nothing to do with the high pressure pump and no you can not bled to the injectors that way on a 2GM20
jim im so happy for you that you got your engine fixed , I HAVE A BOAT TOO IM WORKING ON IT,I CANT WAIT TOO HERE IT RUN
Thanks!
Very ry good explanation thanks. I see that you have just sailed into Iceland👍👍
Good job
Hi James, awesome your trip, regards from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Wow nice work
One of the hardest things I've seen
I recall doing this in Sines Portugal, with a fork lift truck, not easy when the Yacht is moving 😊 We had a good party afterwards 😂😅😊
Actually this was easy 😂 try explaining to a giant Portuguese truck driver, with no idea about Yachts,, exactly what we need to do 😂 using my best Diplomatic approach 👍 😊
That install looked to be trouble free... Good job...
Water reversion is a common problem. The risers are supposed to prevent it but sometimes don't. Flapper helps but a seacock is the only way to be sure. Change that oil after a few hours and you're off to new adventures. Good Luck!
thanks for showing how to do this. My 1979 29' Miller Marine looks very much the same and also has the engine reachable only via the cabin in a similar way (but even more to aft). The Albin engine is fine (so far) and gearbox too (prev owner thought it was faulty). The real problem is with the cutlass bearing, not allowing the propshaft to turn easy, it takes a lot of power to turn it. Luckily I live near a boat repair shop where I can take her out. That's the only way to service a cutlass unfortunately! Best of winds!
dang y'all made that look easy
and a glass of fizzy water
Second !! Good video my guy !
Merci!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love Dales safety shoes........
Chain block works well for single person work. Lever jobs are a pain.
"Holy Shit Balls " Batman!
So great Dale was there to ease this job immensely. By the way, might you ever share a long term plan for Triteia, world voyaging, and James the Sailor? I keep seeing a continuous circumnavigation, as good as you are at it.
Im going through and engine swap and right about now I wish I had a smaller boat!
Balancing on those companionway steps was giving me anxiety, lol!!
peace of mind right there
Hard on the wallet but being able to trust your engine is goodness
Still following you James, nothing is a problem to you, or you wouldn’t be where you are!
Hands on get it done stuff?
Plenty of burning hoops to jump through?
Life is crisis driven by bureaucracy and money!
James from Scotland.
What a pain in the ass, but happy you got it sorted.
🙏
I'm surprised. Most Yamaha's have sleeves now days. Thinking it will run another 20 years. I think the one situation I would want to cure that seemed to plague all you folks (Holly ect) was getting salt water in the wrong places. Controlling that salt water has to happen. Three people had that problem, 3 too many I think. It would be a huge concern for me. Did I copy that was a dual cylinder (yes of course it was) ? What is the model number ? It sure looks good. I've had to force the fuel all the way to the injectors and then tighten them when it arrives. Works good. Sounds absolutely beautiful ! I'm now a patron of Holly and Brian Old Sea Dog. After things settle down (I made changes) I'll see if I can add you. I'm trying to set my limit to $20 monthly for everyone.
My engine is a Yanmar 2GM20F

You should throttle gently up and down on a fresh light off after rebuild to coax as much oil up onto the rings as you. IF you have a fresh cam installed that can present issues because breaking in a new cam involves keeping the engine at higher rpm for like 20 minutes to insure the lifters seat properly to the cam. On a build with a new cam you throttle up and down only in a higher RPM spectrum. It'll be fine though. Sounded like a nice rebuild to me. You will hopefully be good for 6000+ hours as long as you keep the sea water out of the thing. Sounded like you are at the end of your liner size. Had you known earlier you could have pulled the injectors, pumped the sea water from the liners, added fresh water into them and pumped that out and then changed your engine oil and been good to go for quite a while longer on the initial rebuild without having to max out your liner over-bore. But,,,,,,,live and learn is generally how this shit works.
Yanmars only start at full throttle
🤘!!!
I want a relationship as strong as your companionway step at 13:50...
What are you going to do about the water entering the exhaust?
Installing a bronze inline seacock
@@SailorJames Maybe an exhaust syphon would help
I have an anti siphon installed
