Whats going on people, hope you enjoyed the video! This sunday (28th October 2018) there is a NEW day in the life of an ARCHITECTURE STUDENT going live. I have spent a lot of time filming this video and someone has helped edit it so it'll be a fantastic video for you guys to watch! Look out for that for sure. Thank you everyone, the support is amazing
which college?
How hard is it
Thomas Rowntree Hey I got a question do you have to be creative to become an architect?
what A levels do you need for architecture? (especially the must subjects )
Am currently deciding my A levels for college.I have chosen :
A level art
A level English literature
A level graphics
Am doing my GCSEs at the moment, lol
can you please reply ASAP Thxs
anyway love your video
hi if you interested about Architectural ebook i have more than 1000 books, its good for reference, study or design techniques etc. its nice cause all book saved in google drive.
if you interested, you can contact me at adnawri@gmail.com
thanks.
i think he hit puberty at age 2 his voice is so deep it could bring down a kingdom
funny
Hes really handsome though
He would make an amazing Disney villain voice actor lol
Kobsy Official mines deeper and I’m 16 lol
Its like Chris hemworts voice a bit
I’m kinda nervous after watching this vid and I’m still 15 in 9th grade wtf
me too dude 15
Same but I'm a freshman in college
I sooo feel you and man, am I scared...
Why
Hi, I would check these out before making a decision. Drew Paul Bell: Do you have to be good at drawing before going to architecture school and his other videos. Arbuckle Industries, Archiculture: a documentary film (25min) and KhanAcademy Careers and Personal Finance videos. 3 videos on Architectural Design. I would also highly recommend taking CareerFitter.com test for the best Career/Field to help look past the job. If you are currently in an architectural class or even the Industrial Arts you will gauge whether you have a knack for this kind of work. Its more than just art and working at a desk.
I’m rethinking becoming an architect.. it’s like sacrificing everything for a job. Like.. I’d enjoy it a lot, but it seems like a pain, especially the Architecture School.
did you became one? Im planning to be an architect after two months...but im still not sure about it
A true pain. Literally a pain that made me ask what did I got myself into.
But if you have the passion, even the pain is enjoyable.
@@notmyname3556 you are scaring me...
@@user-wr8yg8ix6r Are you in school for architecture? I'm in school for architecture now, I started a few days ago. So far I can't comment too much on work, we haven't done anything meaningful to warrant a strong judgement. If I could say something, however, I would make a remark on the apparent weakness in my sketching, so that's something that I'll be working on in my free time.
The only new challenge thus far is going to be communicating messages via the illustrations that you do for sites; to be specific, communicate about things like shape/form, light/shadows, perspective, texture/patterns, materials and composition etc.
In terms of socialising ... Well, that's going horribly for me.
I'm just looking forward into the future insofar as achieving a bachelors goes. You can decide to pursue architecture professionally, or strive for a new career path with your bachelors and see what else you can do (possibly continue working as an architect, but in a firm and build up experience).

Hello~
I’m sorry I saw this just now...I’m currently studying architectural engineering but unfortunately, I didn’t reach the “architectural” part yet, I’m still taking the general engineering classes and I will start my architectural classes next year):
But anyways thank you so much for sharing your experience I became hella excited now! wish u all the best and success💕
That's cool man architecture always was cool to me! A to do list is a good way to go as well! Thanks for taking us through your day bro! Liked
You're so organized it's weirdly pleasing I love it!
Great video thanks for sharing! Would have loved to have seen a bit more content at uni, maybe some of the kinds of things you discuss in your seminars and the work you do, but still quite a good snapshot. Cheers!
I've watched this video when it came out. I was in highschool and didn't know what I wanted to study yet. Watching this video was kinda scary but so very inspiring. Now I passed my first year studying architecture, ready for the second year to come! Also, I live in France and I didn't know how similar architecture studies were all around the globe! It's so interesting.
I've been thinking about going into architecture. I gotta few questions tho
Do you have to be an artsy person to do architecture? I'm creative but definitely not artsy
What would you say your hardest class has been so far?
On an average day, how long do you spend in school? I've heard rumors that you guys spend a lot of time in studio!
What's the school/life balance like?
What made you go into architecture?
What's your favorite part about architecture?
What kind of person would you say makes a great fit for the architecture major?
So I'm an architecture student in South Africa.
This is my first year of study so take everything with a pinch of salt. I'll try to answer what I can.
I'll begin with stating that my modules are similar to Thomas but have different names. I just have three more modules. Two of which are computer modules and the other a construction module .
So,
1. No you don't necessarily have to be 'artsy' but you are going to have to develop the skill. I suggest you draw as much as you can (it will help you in the long run and you'll be drawing throughout the course). I'm currently on my fifth journal for the year and I have to complete 11 by the end of the year for my final crit.
2. It's relative to each person but in my experience the Environmental theory module isn't the easiest.
3. I'm on campus from 8:30 to 16:20 from Tuesday to Friday. Monday I have an 3 hour construction lecture and 2 hour lecture (on of the computer modules ) that follows immediately afterwards (10 min break between each hour). On Wednesdays I have a 2 hour Environmental studies lecture. Fridays I have a 2 hour Environmental theory (sounds similar to the previous module but they are different) and the remaining computer module for 2 hours Tuesdays and Thursdays I have full day studio and Wednesdays and Fridays I have 2 hours of studio. There's an hour break on each day and a seminar-ish period on Wednesday. You will find yourself spending overtime in studio so you can finish projects.
4. School life balance is possible. You'll find it difficult to find it because your schedule differs from that of your friends studying a different degree.
5. That's a long story but I just have an admiration for it and I would like to see how I can impact my environment and community, maybe even the world🤷♀️ in the same or different way many other great architects have.
6. The challenge, the relationships you forge, the satisfaction of seeing your growth as a designer, being immersed in the world of design and the knowing your not the only one working in the am's trying to finish an assignment.
That's a difficult question to answer. The people inthe architecture department at my university are all different and if iweere to ask my le gures they'd give me a vague non-straight forward answer. To be honest I wonder why they chose me after a long and rigorous selection process I came out in the top 100 but there's 93 students currently in the first year group.
I hope this answers some of your concerns/questions
Due to covid-19 were learning online, but the schedule remains the same but it will change for the second semester.
@@lethaboramphenyane thank you ..☺️
Hey Thomas! So good to find this video. I'm an architect assistant since 2012 and now I'm on 2nd year at University to get the degree and it's getting pretty tough already but even though I don't get much sleep... I really love it so it's totally worth it. Hope you are going good with your degree and getting closer to the finish line. Wish you all the best!
Hey Thomas! I just finished my 3rd year of architecture school here in Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S.! I love being able to relate to your videos. I understand the struggle COMPLETELY. I am always sooo busy and we do put in a lot of hours, but it's so worth it. keep up the work:)
HOW DOES HE MANAGE HIS TIME SO WELL OMGG PLEASE HELP AND SEND TIPS FOR MANAGING TIME😅😂😭
Great video !! Good luck with your studies :D You got a new subscriber!
I want to see more of this video in the future.
Bren Read agree
nice video mate.. keep going ..
I just finsihed the first semester and I'm so in love with this although of course it's so tiring. Some of my friends dropped out already and I think the main problem is time management. But duhh. I survived one sem
I'm not mentally prepared for this 😭
How’s your third semester so far?
Some of my friends dropped out too
I am currently in my third year studying in Nyc. After first semester, 3/4 of my class dropped out and lost some of my new friends lol.
Jannjubu finishing my second year in 6weeks ups and downs but I’m proud i’m making it this far
You are so inspiring! I also study architecture and I am organizing myself so I can go back to swimming everyday :)
Looks fun, I hope to get my masters in it!
nice presentation of your uni life, would be nice to see some of your works/models/designs
have a look at my ‘a day in the life of an architecture student part 2’
Which year of Architecture you are in? And keep making up the videos, ik its hard to make videos and editing them but liked your spirit.
Peace!
funny thing is I actually wanted to study architecture at first, since I did engineering at school, I was praised for me technical drawings and detail when it came designing stuff X)
RAY RAY Im going to :)
That's not funny at all.
@HENG YU HEN XIV happened to us as well. The world of architecture is beautiful, but finishing the course is like a survival of the fittest.
you are so lovable🥰...... love your drive, i also study architecture, currently on internship, didn't even think you needed to emphasize on the intensity of the course lol.....the dark circles did it for you....loved this video and goodluck on your journey!.....lol just realized i'm late to comment😅
I was not expecting that voice lol😂 btw I was looking into becoming an architect because I really love art/drawing and math is okay, I appreciate it to an extent. It also seems like a stable living kind of for people who do art! but the stuff people write online about the major is pretty bad! Do you have any regrets? How does someone figure out if this is the right major for them?
riight? I'm currently a freshman taking in Accountancy but I don't find myself being happy so I'm considering shifting to either Architecture or Engineering
@@joanini7812 Architecture is nightmare!!! Would advise you to go for Graphic design or Multimedia.
@@kohterg3713 I would love to! Fine Arts is my first choice. However, we dont have it in my city. How is it a nightmare tho, mind telling me?
@@joanini7812 Simply the volume of work involved and disciplines you have to master is huge!
It is not just a job, it's something that will consume your whole time, every hour, every day, every month, your whole life, because it's a process that never ends.
I see a lot of students who had a passion for arts or drawing or painting and mistakenly thought that is architecture and later they regret it deeply.
Architecture student here...
@@kohterg3713True. I was disillusioned going into architecture. Already felt uncertain choosing this major, going into it feels even more dreadful. Like every major, your success is really driven by your passion (and time management skill). So if you're not passionate about something, or if you don't think your ability is fit for certain majors, it might not be right for you.
this was very helpful! Thanks a bunch 😊
can i have your e mail plz ?? i wanna some information
This video makes me excited to enter architecture school! I passed the entrance exam but I’m still nervous though.
It’s good fun! look forward to it
A lot of work, but I still feel ready. Well, it’s too late anyways, I’m about to leave in just over a month, but I still feel ready and excited. I have a high pain tolerance and can persevere (and hopefully also enjoy) the work
dang, i was just starting and now finishing all minor subject... but hearing ALL this.. get nervous !!!!!!!!!!
I'm doing a foundation on archi. in the UK and all my seniors are telling me that they never sleep, they only take naps haha. Btw, what would you recommend for people who are taking year 1 in Architecture to study on? If it's history, what books specifically do you recommend to start off with?
Do architecture students even have time to eat cereal :( I didn't have it during past 4 years... u'r lucky :P
Hi Thomas, how did u know that u wanted to do architecture ? Was it something you already knew from the start ? Were you already interested in architecture and knew how to draw or use the programs before you started the course ?
I’m just about to start tear 13 and this video has just made my stress levels rocket in the first minute, I’ve wanted to study architecture since I chose my subjects and I’m not put off by the work load but how do you balance work and uni if it takes up so much time?!????
I'm going to be applying to get into college for architecture this fall, I hope I get accepted into the major! Thanks for sharing so much information about what it's like to go to school for this.
Did you get accepted?
Are you sleep deprived yet?
How'd it go?
Hi! Just a quick question :) Would you say you have enough time to study and work for example on weekends?
I'm really interested on study architecture and I know is not cheap... so I'm recolecting information from students. Thank you so much! I love your channel by the way :D
Everything is detailed!
Aww...I can’t wait to be an architect student 😍
it’s good fun
You got me with The Whitney Houston. LOVES IT. Good luck with everything bro!!!!
thank you man 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Do you ever have weekends off ? Or at least some free time? I’m thinking of architecture school and I know it’s rly time consuming, but I still want some time to go out
My dream is to be an architect I follow you from Morocco keep going u're the best.
Hi i also in morocco and my dream is being an architect can we contact in facebook
Hey just wanted to ask does the macbook pro 15 works for an architect?? Because i heard alots of people saying that its not good or they don’t recommend it but I really want a macbook so what do you think?
"Every Christmas I’ve got to write a 2000 essay” Oof man
i loved it, i`m also a architecture student in brazil so i get how hard it is about the dead lines and all
Seems like It is hard all over the globe, including here in india
This is the first video of his that i've watched of yours and DAMN i didn't expect THAT VOICE to come out of THAT FACE , 🤣🤣💕💕
😂😂
Great video! Which university are you studying at?
Birmingham - check 9:03
What brand of coloured markers were you using? Those look sick😂. I’m just bout to enter 2nd year!
saaaaaameeee heaaaaa
Windsor and Newton pro markers
Good luck m8 I also want to become a architect just like you✌😁😁
I’m studying architecture in Australia in university it’s a 7 year course how long does your course go for ?
Thought my modules were tough to keep on top of on my architecture course, don’t think I could manage with what you have to do with your lectures 😧
man, totally true... so much deadlines ...... I'm trying to adapt... nice video ...It really helped..
glad it helped man
I do 5 modules at once! 🥺😪
I do one on Histories with the seminars.
I major in Design and studio work twice a week.
I major in Construction and studio work once a week.
I do Civil engineering twice a week.
And Small Office practice once a week.
Wow,I really liked your vlog keep going😉
thank you 🙏🏼
My only worry for year 1 is that the work might be extremely confusing/difficult, and the worst part is that you have to do it alone. If it isn't difficult, and the only problem is how much there is to complete, then I'm genuinely okay with it.
This really depends on your university/professor. So I suggest to ask around or do some research first on the school you're eyeing
HEY Thomas! 7:41 is this Heydar Aliyev Centre in your second slide? This building is in Baku and I am from Baku :D Glad to see it on your portfolio!
I’m getting secondhand stress from this
😂
Hi bro i liked the way you present it..i want ask what is the process to join a architecture college there as a student from India.
LETS GOOOO, im subscribing just because he is Aussie
what kind of bag do you use to carry your materials (the one you showed in the elevator)...you should make a video about your supplies
it's Durer bag
I'm an architecture student at Nottingham trent uni but originally from Birmingham nice video just wondering what are those pens called that you are using for ur drawings.
Wow I'm in my first year of architecture and it's practically identical to Australia , guess the workload is Universal aye 😀.
Soo happy to find u
What math did you take the first year of College? ( If it's possible is there a way to content you? I need some help
Is architecrure worth it? I mean is it gonna get a good pay? Because I'm really interested in it but I'm still woried that I might not be able to sustain myself.
man, this sounds like the most chilled Archi course I have heard of. Which uni are you at? 3 modules per semester or year?
+Shane Kemp Birmingham city uni, it is more than 3 modules per semester
Are them coloured markers you are using mate ?
I'd love to know a bit more about how many hours you do a day, what are your weekends like? Does it take over your entire social life ? Are you able to go out once a week / twice a week if you work hard on the other daysThanks !! Any tips for being organised / manage time for work and social life
what social life
Bubbles Zitumane *lol*
Yes I’m really curious, this is a dream of mine but I’d still want to go out out and have a social life... is that possible
Omg I’m in love with him already 🙃
Is it required to be good in drawing/sketching? which I'm not good at, I really want to be an Architect but I don't know how to draw. helppppppp
not necessarily no, you will develop drawing skills on the course
Same
Look up step by step videos of sketching and use your imagination and practice everyday that might help
Do you have any advice for a first year Architecture student?
What kind of maths do I need to learn to study architecture?
So meee hahahhaa architecture life ✌🏻next year third year , hope u doing good
Hope you’re enjoying it ✌🏼
can i have your e-mail plz ?? i wanna some information about architecture study plz??
Any advice for students who will start studying architecture?
8:13 I totally understand this 😂😂
You said a word...and I was shook....that voice 💙
Sounds like any other british dude to me
😍💕
Hi !
I’m actually a young student in the National School of Architecture in Saint-Étienne (France) and today, in order to learn « english students of architecture language », we have watch your video with our english teacher ! And... it’s so.. amazing ! It represents the real life of an architect student 😊
Glad you enjoy the video!!
Pls can you do a laptop suggestions for architecture students video ... would be really helpful
Really enjoyed the video,, just wondering, have you ever missed a dead line as you seem like the most organised person I’ve ever seen
it’s quite difficult to miss a deadline! so no i haven’t 😆
@@ThomasRowntree lol..
I really want to study architecture because ever since I was 6 I would always pretend to be one and I’m trying hard in school so I can be a good student and have my dream job and have a successful life thanks for doing this, this helped a lot :)
can you upload a video on the portfolio you did to get into uni?
also love your vidsss
yes looking to do an application video over summer at some point
9:39 Put the kettle on mate!!!
Fantastic😍I want to ask you if is it hard to study architecture and how much time do you study per day?
it’s not hard if you put your mind to it and i’d probably say about 4 hours a day normally and then more when it comes to deadlines, it can go up to like 8+ hours a day
I have a serious question 😫 I've been wanting to do architecture for years. I'm about to graduate high school. I'm a female and I was raised on a very poor households. How easy/hard is the process on getting an actual job in architecture. Idk this really bugs me. I don't want to waste my moms time.
I found it quite easy to get a job whilst studying architecture but that’s because i knew someone who works in the firm and she referred me to the company! I have graduated so i don’t know how easy it is to get a full time job but there are many many firms out there and if you’re good at the subject, i don’t think you’ll have a problem getting a job
Not liking the sound of swallowing that Actamel
I wanna study architecture too. Btw what college do you go to ?
got into Nottingham uni for architecture, firmed it and 🤞🏾 I’ll be going there in September :)))
Adaugo Nkwocha how u make uni when you ain’t even know the difference between “there”and “their”
Heyyy good for you !!
nice one ! good luck 🤩
John David but he used it correctly...
Ruby Bell *she lol 😂 and tbf I edited aha
Hey, I think I'm going to go into being an architectural technician and was wondering what programs you use and the price?
i use autocad, revit and all the adobe products. autocad and revit are both free (being a student) and adobe is £16.50 a month
I’m in 11th grade and I decided to become an Architect. But the problem is that I need to learn physics. I have never learnt physics before and it’s kinda lowing my passion. What should I do?
why do you need to learn physics?
Hey what´s programs do you use for uni? autocad? indesign? photoshop?
We use a lot of photoshop and indesign and eventually will be working in autocad 👌🏼
Mora Campodonico , InDesign, Photoshop and AutoCAD are VERY outdated tools. Use of any tool is important but bear in mind that BIM is at last in the ascendant will be the tool used when you leave. But use one designed by architects for architects such as Vectorworks or ArchiCad rather than software hyped as being the best, when it is merely popular. ‘Best’ and ‘popular’ are two terms known not to be interchangeable :-)
@@JohnKellett_kreativarchitects but if it is popular that means a lot of companies work with it. I know at my area a lot of companies doing their work in AutoCAD
Ivan Dujić , just because AutoCAD is popular does not mean it is very good nor suited to the way you work. As a real architect (not ‘architectural’ designer / technician / technologist I think and design in 3D using sketching and BIM. 2D software only replicated drawing board techniques which have both been surpassed by better tools that provide the client and contractor better information.
What courses do you have to take in high school in order to be able to study architecture in uni ??
One of them is physics, and some kind of math but I'm not sure which kind
physics, engineering math/science, technical drafting are some
Ohhh cool
Hi, I am thinking of joining the course but I'm worried about the mathsy side of things, as it doesn't come naturally to me. How much maths is involved in this degree? Is it something to worry about? Or is it more design oriented which is what I was hoping for haha
hi there, so far on my course there hasn’t been much maths at all.. it has been very design base which is awesome like you say, i think you would be fine without math skills
@@ThomasRowntree Thank you for responding! I am planning on applying to Bath. Are you at Bath or Birmingham, as the vlog I watched was in bath but another video was at BCU. I only ask because I heard Bath is more sciencey based and thats why I am worried that it might be less of a design centric course. Can you advise? :)
Which country is it
hi I,m Mohit from India. I want to study in usa or uk. I passed in diploma in architecture. please say what will i do please its a humble request
I love your voice
I know this video was posted a long time ago but do you plan on going for your masters in architecture and do you recommend it?
i hopefully will be yes and i would recommend it if you want to do the full course
@@ThomasRowntree dude I've been so stressed lately I have one more question. The MAIN thing I'm scare about when majoring architecture is if architecture I'd a stable job. I'm meaning like do architects get decent full time jobs with decent hours and not just free lance work
@@redapples4422 that depends a lot from country to country.
You could freelance or start working with some small architectural company or big one... and get stuck there for forever doing only minor tasks or maybe shine who knows, but the age of star architects is over just so you know.
Personally i would prefer freelancing since is up to you to organize your time and depending on country it could give you a very pleasing income.
You just gotta be diligent and very patient with the clients.
Once my professor said that getting the degree is the easiest part, dealing with the clients is the real challenge.
dope
where are you studying at
Is your school expensive? How much does it cost?
I chose my options in year 9 and I chose design and technology even tho I dont know anyone in that class I'm now in year 10 and think I want to study architecture
Hey man what camera do you use?
this video was shot with a canon 700d (i think) I now use a canon EOS RP
I thought this would’ve been a less stressful field, I wouldn’t pass
