West Oakland: Bubble, Burst, Rebirth

  • Marilyn Reynolds bought her West Oakland home in 2001 for $600,000. In 2010, after her husband's work dried up and they split up, she was forced to sell it for $180,000 -- to avoid foreclosure. Reynolds isn't alone. Today, new businesses and families from the suburbs are moving in and changing the social landscape. Can a neighborhood be reborn and still maintain a sense of community?

    They were insane to attempt to pay 600K when they clearly did not have enough capital.

      That's what I thought when I heard that. In 2000 I was living in an in-law apt in a victorian a few blocks from Macarthur BART. The gal who rented the main portion of the house bought the whole thing for $250K that same year. At the time I thought that was expensive. LOL

      skip1e You look evil, skip. The lips are smiling in your photo, but your eyes are dead and cold. Taking shots at her grammar was low. And she had no attitude. No wonder you look like a host for demons...you carry such hatred for black people in your heart. That shows on the outside, too. Also ages you quicker, when you hate. I'm sensing a demon, or even several inside of you. The sin of racism dwells within you. You should work on eradicating it through deliverance, then work at becoming a more compassionate and open-minded person. Good luck.

    Re-posting: It's quite unfortunate that you don't understand or appreciate something until you're threatened with, and finally realized, LOSS. I lived in the bay area (Oakland) for a years (lost my job and moved out but would return in a hot minute). I saw the change... but I also saw the disregard and apathy in our neighborhoods. We let people not maintain the streets, we let men prostitute little girls and women on the streets (San Pablo Avenue, Grand, etc.), we let foreigners (Asian and Middle-Easterners) put liquor stores and cheap unhealthy Chinese restaurants, Asian beauty stores in the neighborhoods, you let people sell drugs on your streets and watch your men and young men kill each other with abandon, you don't vote, you don't serve on juries... now white folks see the potential of Oakland and places like Hunters' Point San Francisco... and you cry because you are being forced out.... WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?????!!!!!!!
    I ALMOST DON'T CARE. See what your lack of concern, discipline, care, and community gets you? Do you see???

    Not to say she was stupid to buy a 600k place in 2001, but there were much nicer places to buy for 600k in 2001. Sounds like someone made the wrong investment move.
    ronron7103 This area is still predominately black. I don't see how gentrification is ruining "Black Culture". Gentrification is bringing business and lessening violence in the area. Whites (Btw I'm not white) didn't take large influxes of blacks into their community well and that is why they moved out of West Oakland before it became a black community. Now that they are moving in you think this area is yours to own? If all you're doing for your community is complaining gentrification I think you're the exact reason people wanted to move out of there in the first place.

      Gentrification increases state sponsored violence on people of color-- you may be less likely to get shot in a turf war, or robbed, but you're more likely to get racially profiled and brutalized by police. The violence continues in a new form. Also ask the Ohlone people about gentrification. OG gentrification= colonialism.

      ronron7103 not sure why you would give a response like that to my comment. That has nothing to do with what I said.
      skeletonbite I'd much prefer to get brutalized by police than get shot in a turf war or robbed. At least I can sue the police. I can't sue a thug who shoots me up for fun.

      Jadet T Cops kill unarmed, non-resisting people of color all the time. Not sure if you've seen the news lately, or know the history of police/people of color relations. So you rather be killed by a cop than a "thug?" You have fun with that.

    • @jadett6282
      @jadett6282 Před 10 lety

      skeletonbite I don't think I've heard a non-resisting killing as of late, at least not proven. I haven't been keeping up with the Ferguson case if that is what you're referring to because I feel like the media is very biased against the police when it comes to stories like this. I highly doubt he was not "struggling" as some would suggest, but once again I am not following the story so I may be wrong.
      Let's just keep it real and say black instead of people of color because you and I both know you're just referring to black people. And no I am neither black nor white.
      Yes I'd rather die knowing my family will have tons of money (killed by a cop) than die knowing my family will be left with nothing (killed by a thug with no money). I don't see why getting killed by a "thug" will be more "fun" that makes no sense what so ever.

      No, we know our people cause so much crime. Seriously.... just admit to it. Stop the excuses.
