I think differently. When you're old, do the things you always wanted to do. You can't take your money with you so spend it while you still can... may that be vacation, hobby, or nkauj mos ab. Nothing lasts forever. Marriages between 2 Hmong Americans don't last forever so you can't expect marriages between Hmong American and Hmong Lao to last either. Yes, you spent a lot of money to take them and their whole family out of poverty but still, you can't expect them to force themselves to like you forever.

I used to work at an Asian Women Domestic Violence Shelter and worked with many Hmong women from Laos and Thailand. There are good and bad ones. There are ones that does lie and ones that does experience bad things/marriage. Its not that the shelter staff brainwashes the women. Staff just go off of what the women tell them. But i have to be honest, i have heard from a few Laos and Thailand women admiting that they purposely married old American Hmong men just to bridge over. Married for a few years to get more indepdent and leave. If the husband does not allow them to leave nicely, they will lie about abuse/domestic violence to go to court to get divorce, child support, etc. Good luck.

I think there are so many stories like this between Hmong Americans and Hmong Lao is because Hmong Americans put a too high expectation on nkauj mos ab, expecting nkauj mos ab to stay with the Hmong American for life because Hmong American spent so much money on nkauj mos ab and her entire family taking them out of poverty and into the US. If Hmong Americans just lower their expectations or better yet, have no expectations, these things will still happen but Hmong Americans won't have as many strokes. Hmong Americans got to understand that marriages between 2 Hmong Americans don't last either. Hmong Americans got to understand that Hmong Lao only marry Hmong Americans because of the US dollar and green card. Hmong Americans got to understand that even if the wife is a Hmong American, she too can and will still sue you for the house, the kids, half of your 401k and savings, child support and alimony. So don't expect the marriage to a Hmong Lao be any different. Go into the marriage thinking if divorce after 10+ years, then that's a win. If you set your expectation too high, you'll only be disappointed.
