BTT Pad 7 - FULL Klipper But It's Not Easy!

  • 2023 has become the year of the Klipper Pad.
With many new machines being released with Klipper control baked in, those of us with Marlin controlled machines might start feeling like we're being left behind.
That doesn't have to be the case though. Klipper can be added to pretty much any machine with some additional hardware. Arguably the easiest way to add Klipper control is with what has come to be known as a klipper Pad.
The Pad 7 is the latest Klipper Pad and has some great features.

I remember initially I couldn't run the accelerometer, so repeatedly I flashed the BTT file; repeatedly installed Kiauh to reinstall mainsail, moonrakern klipperscreen; and after six tries could not install the accelerometer via the terminal, possibly because there was no Pi. Finally I flashed the BTT file, and the accelerometer worked. I have the pad wired directly to the 24V printer power supply using the barrel plug BTT provides.

I am glad to have stuck with the SonicPad - Even after reading all the negative comments about it that it's locked down and not "full Klipper".
After your videos, my Ender 3 S1 Pro is just amazing and this video here confirmed my suspicions that a "real Klipper" is costing me to much time.
I'm pretty affirmed with Linux, rPi and all the config and SSH stuff - but compiling your own firmware and getting that stuff online - Sorry this is just too involved for my liking.
I love to tinker and experiment with bleeding Edge. But I am not even printing for one full year and this would suck the fun out of 3D Printing for me.
If I want to get heavier involved in Klipper, I need a seperate machine to tinker on or grab one of the new fangled ones that already come fully built in with Klipper in the first place.
Great video as always. Thanks for all the effort you go through!

I purchased the Sonic Pad because i wanted an entry level device to klipper. My problem with the sonic pad was sometimes klipper related other times device related. Usb issues and then when the update came along and i had both my printers dialed in. No more dialed in and had to start over. So i installed linux on a touchscreen computer and i'm back up and running. Not sure there is a benefit to these pad units when you can use the laptop to not only control the printer, but also, find the downloads and documentation. I was considering a pad 7, but i think i'll continue with learning klipper on the laptop. Until these Co. figure out where this is all headed. Another, Great, Informative video. Thanks Rickey.

Great video. You really highlight the difficulties of setting up klipper. I am currently using an Orange Pi 3 LTS, my original 8-bit Ender 3 Pro board, and a fairly inexpensive HDMI/USB Touch screen for klipper. I have not connected it to my printer yet hince my using the 8-bit board. It is basically working though I haven't figured out how to configure klipper to work with my printer yet since my Ender 3 Pro is heavily modified.
I recently discovered that Microswiss hotend/extruder cannot handle high print speeds. It would not make much since to use klipper on it before fixing this issue. So, I am looking at possibly buying a Titan hotend/extruder for it.

I really liked your testing with the Sunlu S1. Sunlu released an improved version, the S2, about a year ago. Perhaps it would make a great video seeing how the S2 improved over the S1 and/or how to improve the S2. (I believe getting the moisture out is still a problem) With the S2 there are now two heaters surrounding the entire spool and maybe the insulation properties also improved but I am unsure about that. Cheers!

I was new to Klipper and took the risk with the Pad 7, over the Sonic Pad. I installed it on my E5 S1 and had a pretty ok journey setting it up, using much of the same YT resources as here. My only issue with the Pad 7 is the Wifi. It seems there could be an issue with poor antenna quality, or in some cases not it's not been connected correctly. I really like the Pad and Klipper has changed my life hahaha! Even as noob with Klipper myself. I do feel the set up of the Pad 7 although not "plug and play". Will help in your journey to both understand Klipper better, and make the most out of it. Loved the video as always.

Hi Ricky, been following your videos for a while now and they are really amazing please keep up the good work.
Would you be able to do a Nozzle changing video for your Ender 3 S1 Pro, with the direct drive? I've seen your video for the Ender 3 v2 with the bowden tube where you dont fully tighten the nozzle and then push the tube down fully and then fully tighten the nozzle. Just wondering what the procedure is for the S1 Sprite.
    Many thanks

    • @RickyImpey
      @RickyImpey  Před 9 měsíci +1

Hi Russ, it's much simpler with the Sprite hotend as there is no bowden tube to push through. Basically, just make sure it's hot, hold the heat block still and tighten/losses the nozzle. Hope this helps.

I just got the BTT Pad 7, I ordered it even though I not a expert in the system it uses! But I am sure I work through it with help from online channels etc.?
I went for this Pad 7 instead of the Creality Sonic Pad because the Creality unit has been found to be a a huge pain when it comes down to using
NON- Creality printers as many channels have said? Seems that Creality only expect their own printers to use it
and the other companies printers can get lost! So hard as it is, I picked the BTT pad 7.
I have the Elegoo Neptune 3 Max, and the only two things I wished it had was a all metal 300 C hot end and a Klipper control.
And just now I found out that Elegoo will be releasing a Neptune 4 Plus and Max with Klipper and all metal hot end of 300 C.
The same cost for the new Neptune 4 Max as mine cost directly from Elegoo of $470. the plus is also the same as the Neptune 3 Plus of $350.
If only I known that they do them I would have got the new Neptune 4 Max instead?
They are taking pre-orders of the two new klipper versions from the 23rd September.
I will not pay again for the new Neptune 4 Max as I not made of money! It took me sometime to save to get the Neptune 3 Max.
As for the guide to set this pad 7 up, the Auroura Tech guide was run through far too fast with missing information, Which I did say to her about?
Good guide it would be but only if they do it slower and show the steps better! She seems to rush through the steps and not show the way it was set?
And there is far too few help simple step up clear online guides around sadly! Bad enough the UK customs and parcel force mucked me around when
the BTT Pad 7 got here from thee EU sending country of Germany. it took me also 30 days to get the pad 7 delivered and cost me £32.34p in import fees. for a goods price of £109.00p.
I will have to now try and get the UK Customs of HMRC to pay me back the import fee because their own payment page states
if the imported EU goods are costing below £135 they can't charge any fee to import it? So they charged me when they should not have done so!
My Advice to all living in the UK don't order the Pad 7 to be sent here from any of the EU or they will charge you for the import even like me where they should not have done?
If like me you order it directly from BTT, pick any other country from their list of depots around the world. Because that import fee for only EU to UK is a new law just set this year.

Rick, again, outstanding video and info.
As a relative newbie, I'm always looking for ways to "make it better" but for my needs Marlin ---so far--- works well in my use but I'm so darned curious about using Kipper. But the $170 question. Pad 7, or Sonic pad. Like you (from what I can tell) obstacles are no more than a thrown gauntlet challenge even if I didn't want the challenge if that makes sense? Bottom line, if I decide to make the Klipper leap I've no doubt I'll get it accomplished but at what level of aggravation am I up for?
You've laid it all out so well for which I thank you which brings me to one question. As Klipper is only a word to me, what does unrestrained Klipper offer over a restricted version like that of the Sonic pad? I know the question is vague but then my knowledge is vague so the questions will be as well.
Note, I'm getting by with Marlin OK now, so if the choice for Klipper is made then the Sonic pad might make me happy. But, what would I be missing if not jumping all the way to a BTT Pad 7 for example?
Keep it up, many thanks, PC

    • @RickyImpey
      @RickyImpey  Před 9 měsíci

You probably need an answer that is too long for a CZcams comment but, in simple terms, this is how I would sum up the two options: The BTT Pad 7 is the same as buying all of the individual components and making them all work together. There is no manufacturer UI on top and no restrictions to what you can do. The Sonic Pad is a manufacturer edited version of klipper that helps you get setup but then limits what you can do. Things are changing with every update so it's difficult to say how much you will be missing out on with the Sonic Pad. Maybe very little in time but what happens if Creality develop a new similar product and stop compiling updates for the Sonic Pad? The Pad 7 is more difficult but, long term, you will probably be happier as long as you are prepared to do the learning.

So would you say that, based on your research, that if you already had a spare Raspberry Pi 4, and don't care if you use a touch screen or a web interface from your PC, that you may as well just set up the Pi? It doesn't look like this particular product was any easier to set up.
