ive had the snapfold bowls for years, they work well but if they have been sitting flat for a bit and its cold out they are incredibly stiff and the snaps like to let go (usually at the worst moment when you have a liquid in them)
5:55 - Heya. I have had my camelbak 3.0Ltr Mil Spec bladder now for 6yrs and it hasnt leaked due to its construction and design for the military. I now have a camelbak 3.0Ltr mil spec crux insulated tube bladder is is doing well also :)
I like your videos. I hear there's a contest for the best hiking channel. Your in the top five. Good job, editing is good, info great, clear and to the point.
ThermoDrop kind of SUCKS! It takes 20-25 minutes to read the correct temperature but if you touch it or hold it to push the button, it almost instantly senses your skin temperature and raises the readout temperature? Then once you set it down, it takes 20-25 minutes to return to the correct temperature reading again. What good is a zipper thermometer that you can’t touch? During testing it read my room temperature of 64F, as soon as I picked it up, the readout temperature started climbing to 65, 66, 67.. finally after just a few moments it was over 80 degrees F. Set it back down and it took 22 minutes to return to 64F. Seems accurate until you touch it!
Also, if exposed to the sun while clipped to your pack, it will read out a much hotter temp than the ambient temp really is. It registered over 100F when actual temp was in the 80's on a trip I had it on a couple years ago. It's only value to me now is to hang it in my tent to record the low for the night. I have the Govee now, been about a year, and my app says the battery is still at full strength and seems to be much more accurate at having the sensor sheltered from hand holding, sun, etc.
the folding plate, bowl are great; I found them in 50% off bin at my local gear store. Pole magnets look too nerdy/fussy for me. My BD poles fold up small, and taking my pack off, or laying down my poles for 10 seconds is free. Decathlon is often a great place to get high quality stuff!
I recommend the Govee Bluetooth Thermometer over the Thermodrop (yes, I have it too). It's cheap, fairly light and has great battery life and bluetooth range. You can leave it outside and access it from your phone while you are still bundled in your sleeping bag.
+1 For the Govee. I love the historical graph to see how temperature and humidity trended over time. That said, I love the thermodrop just clipped to my pack or hanging in the tent to glance at the current temp. Both great use cases.
I've been using the thermo drop for 3 years now and know for sure it's very inaccurate, I removed it permanently from my system last month. fun game when hiking with others is to see how different each one reads from the next. these where designed as a promo for cooks
That’s interesting. I’ve got one sitting at my desk and it lines up pretty consistently with the thermostat sensor across the room and govee bluetooth sensor I have.
I have a version that fits Nalgene bottles - they have the same mouths as Hydro Flasks so you can leave your water at room temperature! With a stainless steel container and my brand new silicone tube option you can significantly reduce your plastics exposure!
I found the thermodrop last summer online and picked one up. Its fantastic! I've used it for 20 plus nights in the Backcountry amd its worked perfectly. It is very very very helpful to have it around to see when the temps start to plummet, and also at night to help me ser how well sleep system held up overnight.
I actually just got a couple of the snapfold bowls delivered to me. We sometimes need a bowl to mix up stuff like pancake batter while at other times we could use a lightweight cutting board. We use to use a collapsable bowl but it was hard to clean, and a dollar store kids placemat for the cutting board. This allows both of those items to be combined! I am interested in the Thermodrop now.
The Stick Stasher looks amazing. I've chosen Osprey packs again and again because of the simple stowaway trekking pole attachments. But this is some serious competition!
Too bad the manufacturer of ThermoDrop charge $20 for shipping to Europe for a product that costs $22 (now on sale for $15.40). Garage Grown Gear is no better and also charges $20 for shipping. Because the total cost exceeds my country's free import limit ($34 including shipping cost), I'll have to pay 25% tax/VAT + $30 handling fee for tax calculation. That gives a total cost of $82 :)
Hello from Brazil Justin! Excelent videos!!! It recently called my attention in Aliexpress a 65 liters budget backpack called "jungle king cy1040". Do you know if it is it any good? I havent seen any review yet... if you could do it... Thanks a lot!!!
Another great video. I like the water bottle genius. However, I find measuring by pouring out a pain. Pour a little, check, pour a little, check, pour a little.... whoops too much. A game changer for me was portion control snack bags. They are one cup zipper lock bags w/ quarter cup measurements. Smallest packing measuring cup I've seen. Found them at 'the Mart of Walls'. Insulated Pouch - that's nice. I've thought about making one. I've been lazy and use a insulated lunch bag from the dollar store. They last one or two seasons before needing to be replace but for $1.25 that's not bad. Those Fozzils products have been on my wishlist for a while. I just need to pull the trigger on them. One Bottle - picked one of those up this year. Looking forward to using it this season. Thermometer - I've been going back and forth between a Govee and a Thermdrop. I haven't decided on which one to pick up yet.
I really thought that water bottle bladder setup would be made even better if it could attach to my Sawyer squeeze filter between the bottle an the hose.
Justin i have seen you trek with only one trekking pole in some of your videos. Do you recommend trekking with only one pole or with two poles? If only with one pole: why only with one and not with two?
This is a great video...I love seeing niche products that might be game changers or just might be a gimmick. Anywho, I need to check out that One Bottle setup...omg...why did I not think of that. 😀 I bought the Thermodrop after seeing Shugg (the awesome hammock guy) use it, but for me, it has not been accurate out in the field recording the temp. Maybe I just wound up with a lemon...Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. Peace out! 🙂
Wow I love the stick stasher magnets and will be buying those ASAP - I did the WCT last summer and didn't have anywhere to store my poles during the ladders except my water bottle pockets on my bag or carrying them - my hiking partners were pretty sick of putting my poles in the pockets for me, these would have been great!
Think the scale sticker for bottles is a redundant product. Pouring pre- measured amounts into your bottle and marking the fill height with a Sharpie you get for less does the same thing, and with that same Sharpie you can sit down and note down your correct volumetric measurement on every food pouch before heading out; no on the fly maths necessary.
Or you just buy food that has marks for the water level, i never encountered one without. I don't have transparent water bottles either, especially in winter when you should use a thermos
Thanks for this Justin! Great video again. Question: do you think the stick stachers will be suitable for trail running or will they likely fall off or bounce a lot?
My default Samsung calculator app has a conversion tool on it. I had one of those Fossil bowls with my on a weekend trip recently. My outside pocket on the back of my pack blew a hole and gear was falling out. I put the opened bowl inside the pocket to cover the hole and that kept my outside pocket gear from falling out.
The stickers seem cool but as the bottle ages you have to throw it away. I think a sharpie and marking up a bottle or 2 before the trip would be better environmentally.
You missed mentioning one of the best features of the Thermodrop - the readout rotates to right side up, even if you are looking at an upside down Thermodrop. And if you buy the sea grass color, they donate money to plant trees. 😊
Thanks for the video. especially the one bottle system is really interesting and i'll probably buy it. i was looking for something like it previously and was unable to find a similarly simple system. Thanks for shouting out interesting and actually useful new gear!
A friend of mine has had snap bowls like that for years and years! I think she got them at MEC maybe. I like them, would be great for the dog when he's recovered and can go out hiking with you!
Haha my voice changed there for a second. Nice video. I was looking up the Snapbowls recently. I wanted to get a lighter weight cutting board for when I take fresh food out with the Firebox. The XL one looks nice for washing clothes.
Definitely see that thermodrop doing well. Lots of times i've been out camping wanting to know the temp. Though not invest lots of money just to know. Great budget item
The bottle genius sticker is great, I see so many people who think it's wrong because they put the sticker on in the wrong spot. Those snap bowls are great, way better than trying to carry traditional bowls.

@John Riddle maybe my battery needs replacing. Last trip, it read 34, and my water was freezing up.

Why will this gear not be popular in 2023?
Absolutely NOT
Bc we have to live very far into the future to enjoy the present moment. Or something.
he's probably future proofing the title so when someone sees it in October 2023, it's still going to appear relevant
Because he's a time traveler
Assuming the title changed

One more thing the rehydration pouch can do. You can put a hand warmer in it and keep items from freezing.
Would be really helpful to mention each item weight...

Much cheaper option of the snapfold is the Orikaso Origami bowl. Takes a few goes to get fast at folding but very intuitive once you do.
