Auerbach's longtime ace tech Dan Johnson details the eight amps and cabinets that power the band's arena-sized shows.
So, what lead to The Black Keys ending their unannounced hiatus? Well, for Auerbach, it was the same guitar that started the ascent up this crazy rollercoaster-Glenn Schwartz’s 10-string hollowbody. James Gang and Eagles ace Joe Walsh was jamming with Auerbach at Easy Eye and the two brought up Schwartz and how his ferocious playing impacted them both. Auerbach spent any free time he had during high school to make the trek from Akron to Cleveland to see Schwartz play. Walsh coincidentally looked to Glenn as a guitar hero and eventually took over for him in the James Gang when Schwartz left the band, moved to California, and formed Pacific Gas & Electric.
Auerbach and Walsh got Schwartz down to Nashville to record him at Easy Eye Sound Studio. The session was inspiring and provided Auerbach the visceral memory of why he loved the Black Keys. The next day he called Carney, they put a session on the books and Let’s Rock was made.
Premier Guitar made the comfortable drive south to Atlanta’s State Farm Arena to not only check in with Auerbach’s longtime tech Dan Johnson, but the guitar master himself makes a cameo to talk all things guitar, including Glenn’s aforementioned 10-string that was loaned to him after a recent Cleveland gig. Other 6-string highlights include a gold-foil-loaded Peavey Razer gunning for the T-Model Ford mojo, a lawsuit-era Ibanez SG, a custom-build (by Dan Johnson) that echoes back to industry heavyweight Paul Bigsby, and surprisingly enough, a ’59 burst. While there, we also spoke with new bandmembers Delicate Steve, and the Gabbard brothers (Andy and Zach who are also 2/3 of the Buffalo Killers) from Akron, who all show off the goodies they bring to the arenas to back their longtime buds.

The second Black Keys one you guys did was one of the first RR I ever watched and all three videos are still some of my favourites (as well as ones I always go back to) because I absolutely love Dan's playing and the tones he get are just great, I got to see them live back in 2022 and Dan, Patrick and the other guys (Delicate Steve and Zach/Andy Gabbard) sounded absolutely awesome. Great as usual, guys, and Happy New Year from Canada

Very unique rig and very interesting. Thanks PG. I bet it pushes alot of air and sounds great. 16 closed back 10s and 8 open back 12s! Id love to hear that!!! Im also a huge fan of cabbing out combos. One of my live rigs was a deluxe cabbed out to a 4 by 12 Marshall with greenbacks and it really rocked!!

Gar Gillies from Winnipeg.
Gar was an electronics genius.
His amps are legendary. Some of which will be as sought after as dumbles.
There are 2 electronic guys in Winnipeg. one, Don Voth is another legend. Ray Rockwell is a pedal and custom amp builder who is a legend in the making.
Dan from Akron is my favorite tech!

The tech mentioned that the two Fender combo amps were 4 x 12. Were they Quad Reverbs? I couldn’t make out the writing on the faceplates.

Super Reverbs
@@edharmicar6227 Super Reverbs have 10" speakers, Quad Reverbs have 12's. Dan has been known to use Quad Reverbs in the past and that is what Homer Steinwess was playing bass through in the Arcs live show, as mentioned in the interview. Check out the logos of the silverface Supers vs Quads on google, looks like Quad in this video.

How about actually telling us what the amps and cabs are instead of just pointing to them and calling them "this" and "that"???
So damn old school trendy... "It's gotta be at least twice as old as I am but fully stock everything and have those tube rectifiers and can't have a master volume and has to be a low wattage amp you've never heard of and is unobtanium"... hahaha guitar players are an interesting bunch, that's for sure. Love the Keys tho!

Was out of our control. They weren’t allowing sound while the rest of the production crew were setting up - we’re just lucky for the time and access to do the Rundown! Best we can say: go see them live and get the full experience beyond CPU speakers.

Yeah man but to each their own too! Play whatever amps you want and make peace with it! As long as you're happy with it then nothing else matters.
But the person playing can feel the difference. And that can genuinely make them, both play better, and feel better about it.
I have never understood this type of comment. Even if all of this is just so the artist enjoys and feels comfortable in their craft, what is the harm?
