Although the i9-9900K wasn’t the first CPU to bear the i9 brand, it was the first that desktop users had access to. Sitting at the top of the 9th generation Coffee Lake Refresh series, it signified Intel finally being willing to fight AMD on the core count battlefield. With 14nm architecture, it proved more than a match for the Zen+ Ryzen 7 2700X in 2018 - but does that translate into a good performer five years later?

ERRATA:
The Blender chart has the i3-7350K at some ridiculous low number. This is because Google Sheets can't handle fractions of seconds, so it converted "26:47.11" into "02:47:11" as if it was the time of day. The i3 actually took 26 minutes 47.11 seconds, not 2 mins 47.11. For the future, I'll probably just round the fractions off...
That 7350k was just such a enthusiast part that it quite literally broke charts.

I think that the error is that Google Sheets uses hours (of the day) indstead of minutes, if you pay attention to the chart you can see in the "x" axsis are written some values, (i.e.: 00:00:00, 06:00:00 12:00:00 and 18:00:00) after that the cycle repeats. Could be it? Hope I've been useful for the next video.

It holds bad considering its 2018-19 cpu and zen3 2020 and zen3 cpus still on sale now almost 4 years later and 5800x3d are pretty competitive with 14900k too on cheap am4 mobos

i recently bought a 10900K and an asrock imb-1711 mb for use in my proxmox home server. 20 identical logical processors at 3-5ghz kick ass. none of that E and P core nonsense.

Bro your CPU is about 2 iterations of the "man, I've been left behind" thing ahead of mine. I've got a i5-4690K. It hasn't made any sense for me to upgrade my CPU since I bought this PC used in 2016. How many times will you upgrade before I finally do?
@@TheBcoolGuy this purely depends on what you play and do. The i5 4690k wouldnt even help me at my UW res on the games I play at all, nvm the overall experience being slower. Heck give it till the 8800x3D and I will upgrade from my 5800x3D to it as by then I am going to assume the GPU I will get and the FPS I want will be out of reach for the 5800x3D

Are these sellers seeing something that we aren't? Like the video said, you can get a better cpu and motherboard for cheaper, and carry your ram over since I'm assuming people who are eyeing the 9900k or similar are on older ddr4 motherboards.

I think the reason for the high price on these old i9s is the fact that it's the best CPU you can get if you have an LGA 1151 system and don't want to/can't get rid of it yet.

I have IT colleague's who would rather buy Intel even if its slower than AMD. You will always have irrational fans on both sides.
It’s a curve, it was pretty cheap when outdated till the stock started to run out then the prices went back up since there is limited supply. Basic economics.

The i9 9900K was the best Gaming CPU money could buy at the time, but nowadays you can get a Ryzen 5 5600 for the same performance at half the price, and even cheaper a used i7 8700k, for roughly the same performance. Not to mention that the 5s of Intel 12th gen and Zen 4 just smoke the old flagship.
Only reason to buy is just for bragging right at this point, since the most logical reason is to jump on 12400f+mobo for the same price of the i9 9900K. And it's a rather good deal! A whole platform upgrade of cpu+mobo+ram for a new 12th gen kit, probably enough for a 12600kf and ddr5, or just the i9 9900k to cover for the 12400f and mobo cost while selling the mobo separately for a bit more than in a combo.
You need need high framerates, why not keep the second hand CPU...

Good tidbit at the end. These things are extremely expensive still. My brother wanted to get one to not abandon his Z370 board to upgrade from a 8600K, but for $50 more than our local cheapest 9900K, I got him a 13600K and a Z690.

I always love videos from this channel, the presentation and photography is something I don’t even see much more popular channels and I love to see comparisons like this because you don’t normally see results with parts that are more than a few years old with most content.
I’d love to see a performance per watt since energy bills have gone up for many people and to see how far we’ve progressed when shrinking the nodes.
Also, I’d really like to see a comparison from zen2 to zen3. Many people, including myself, upgraded from zen2 and noticed a huge increase in performance but how does it compare to coffee lake CPUs or even older? Is it worth it to upgrade to the now even cheaper zen2 since am4 is being sunset and prices of those parts are cheaper than ever or would it be better to just skip to zen3 or even am5?
Weirdly, over the years some 'flagship' CPUs will still command a higher price than what is reasonable. The old Pentium 4 Extreme Editions were examples of that phenomenon for a while. It's still fun to revisit these old premium parts though.
People often forget that their hardware is aging. It’s not rare to see people sell a rig with a 980ti and i7 6700k for 600€ or something. Its hilarious :)
I remember using a 9900k back when I used to be editing supervisor for my friend's youtube channel. It was great for its time. Never gamed on it. Sadly lost most of the system to a massive power surge which took the mobo, psu and cpu out. At least the ram and gpu were fine

My last Intel system was an Evga x58 e758 /3 Way -Sli and i7 930 bought March 2010, I lucked up and got the last boards Evga had made and didn't need the mod to drop a Xeon X5660 into the socket and boots right up, it was so old it had working OCZ Gold DDR 3 1600Mhz Tirple channel , I later added some Corsair memory which run fine with the OCZ at 1600Mhz Triple Channel @ 18Gb, last time it ran was Crossfire RX 580 and RX 570 = no ribbon was needed anymore.
Moved to AM4 in 2017 and never looked back!

I have an i7 8700k and an MSI Z370-A PRO Motherboard. Did he say to not put the i9 9900k in the Z370? If so then I'll have to upgrade the morherboard as well or just get a better GPU and keep the 8700k.

One possible reason this CPU is still so expensive is that some of the last Intel-based iMacs can be upgraded to this CPU... I've noticed the same trend happening even for Sandy bridge era stuff and certain MXM graphics cards like the AMD WX4130 and WX4150 that are known to work well in the 2011 iMacs

Because this channel focuses more on older, cheaper and often second-hand hardware. If you want to see how newer stuff stacks up there are plenty other channels.

I bought the rival to this CPU in early 2020, the Ryzen 9 3900X. 50% more multicore performance and similar single core performance at the same price point seemed like great value.
Zen 2 was the cross over point where AMDs concept started to become refined. We saw the same thing with the Core i range, promising early performance gains from gen 1 and 2 then refinement in gens 3 and 4.
Same, I went AMD also, was the right call in the end for sure, upgraded to a 5800X3D and now I'm considering waiting for AM6 or post Zen, whatever they call it. Same with my 6800XT vs 3080 in the end the 6800XT aged much better.
@@darthwiizius No, Zen 2, the IF-MC is gimped. It automatically cut off when it detected that you are using 3.733 GHz RAM kit. Your IF speed is running 1/4 speed of the RAM kit:

A friend of mine had a 2700X, and it's was a golden silicon. He bought the expensive 4GHz RAM kit with CL17, not the higher CL20+. He saw 20% boost of performance on average across the board!
This shows that the IF is dependent on the RAM speed (2GHz, since DDR is double data rate) and very low latency RAM.

I did the budget version last year, I upgraded from the R7 1700 to the R5 5500. Was using the R7 from Dec 2019 to about a year and a bit ago. Zen3 cores are a big upgrade from Zen cores. Even on my (now) entry level system on my cheapo 2 fewer Zen3 cores there are much fewer stutters than with Zen. It's the only change I've made other than sticking a 1TB Samsung Evoplus 2.5 SSD to replace a 512GB 2.5 HDD to expand memory,
Behcnhmarking in gaming at the time often put it slightly behind the 9700k which is what I went for. Alas the lack of HT has dated this CPU too. I only went intel at the time because I was running a hackintosh.
Just buiilt a new system on the AM5 platform and intend to move back to linux from macos. Hopefully I won't have to do a full system upgrade this time unlike with my 9th gen intel system.

I had the 9900ks. Somehow sold it 2 weeks ago for £260. With that I bought an x570 motherboard and a 5700x3d with £50 spare!
The only upgrade I've ever done that gave me money back.
I too had issues with RAM faster than 3200, but the new AMD system sees the same kit running 3800.

@IcerbergTech I9-9900k was design for emulator software VT-D and VM ware program you will not notice this processor upgrade when you came from i7 8th gen going to I9-9900k when just using it for straight forward gaming. This processor is pricey due to the demand of productive 3d rendering and other rendering app. Basically this processor is much more effective when used on Nvidia Quadros for productivity. This processor also one of earlier chips stable enough to create 1 PC 5 user at the same time. Basically I9 is a baby junior version of latest Xeon chipset
I run an I9-9900k with a 4070 ti and 32 GB of RAM still manage to get 100% GPU usage in most games especially at 4k

Currently running a 9900k and 2060 @1440p and was thinking of upgrading to a 4070 Ti Super. You think it would be worth the money? Wanting to play some newer games at 1440p at not abysmal frames.
If the perfomance graphs are right then you would have a pretty significant bottle neck at 1440p but 4k you would be getting pretty much no bottleneck So I would say you can get away with it. If you undervolt the gpu you would probably be fine at 1440p. Undervolting is easy and highly recommended if youve never done it before.@@xaxscratchxax926
Memory helps a lot. On both my 10900 (non k but power ulocked so 5.2 single core / 4.6 all core) and my 11900k saw big gains going from 32gb single rank cl18 3600 to 32gb dual rank cl14 3733 b die. 9900k is still overkill for the majority of games especially if you can pair it with good memory.
It should be a war crime that Iceberg Tech only did his benchmarks with crappy 3200MHz dimms.
how do you find that low of latency with that speed? do you buy cl14 3200 ram and overclock?
@@lilporno6583Other way around, it was a pair of cl16 4000mhz that I tightened the timings on with a downclock. The IMC on the non K 10900 isn't great and the 11900k to keep it in Gear 1 (which you want for gaming) can't really get above 3733/3866 unless you got an amazing chip.
I'm still rolling with an i9 9900k paired with an rtx 4080 and it's hanging in there nicely

still on my i9-9900k, though it started out with a 1070, and has been through a 3090 and now a 4090. The main thing showing its age now is DDR4 compared to DDR5 and will be my main reason for upgrading in the autumn when the Core Ultra 200 series is released. If there was a z390 board with DDR5 support I might be inclined to keep the CPU as it's still plenty for games.

Well the i9 was using cheap memory. I bet it was the Gigashite boards fault.
I still use a 9900K, paired with an RTX 4070 for 1440p gaming. Frame generation really helps on those games that support it, Flight Sim especially. Timespy, and at 5.1ghz it scored 11980 in a recent test btw. Next year I'll be looking at am5 and a 7800x3d but happy enough for now and I'll still be able to get a fair amount selling it. I'm still on a 9900k also, with an RTX 4090. At 4k resolution, the GPU is the bottleneck in most games. That being said, I'll probably upgrade to a 15900k next year.

It's a silicon lottery, some !9's can run up to 4266 MHz
thats just a spec, these cpu's can easily do 3600 not sure why iceberg couldn't reach 3600

I have 200 fps running valorant and fortnite at low settings i9 with 3070 what am i doing wrong
I got one of these chips back a few months after they launched. As a layman at the time, i had this paired with a budget motherboard in a prebuild, so the vrms couldnt keep up with my attempts at overclocking. Today it barely holds 4.8-4.9GHZ, and the good motherboards are expensive as ever. even so, i never felt the need to upgrade so its decent coming from someone who owned it new.
Ill hold out with it least a little longer, lol. Newer processors aren't impressing me much, even with their great budget pricing (especially compared to the graphics market).
You know what I find interesting about the i9? That naming convention was originally planned to be used with the original core i series, but for whatever reason they changed plans and stopped at i7.
Ram is a issue on new platforms. Its suggested to have only 2 stick. (1 per channel) then you can run high memory speeds. While if you have 4 sticks it will not allow to clock higher above 3200mhz( some ryzen chips with 4 sticks only work from 2666mhz-3200mhz) anything higher is a no go

Would be very interesting how high you can clock this thing. I believe this is, were the most "value" lies, not performance wise, but when you are into overclocking and want to have some fun with it.

How energy consumption compare to the other models
I still rock a i9 9900k still to this day with a 64gb ram and an ex 3060 12gb vram and a 2Tb m.2 ssd and the only thing holding this cpu back is the motherboard VRM.
I would love to see INTEL's 10 and 11th Gen results in these look-back videos.

when i think of something older than 10th gen i just get sad. and then i think of 11th gen and it gets worse. i remember when the 7th (i believe?) gen “i9” came out and i said why would anyone need that. whichever was the one with 18 cores basically completely HEDT. sure E cores aren’t “real cores” but it’s still a little baffling how 16 cores became “standard” for high end and now we have 24 cores. even when 8 cores was becoming the norm i was telling myself who realistically needs more than 8 for anything except for maybe servers.
Yeah I don't know about who would need that for gaming, my old i7 7700K and GTX 1660 Super still work great. My daily driver with a 13900K and a 3060 TI doesn't really perform that different in most of the games I play, but man does it make life easier in my personal hobby/job preparation/portfolio projects where I am writing fairly complex programs. Even my work machine's 12 threaded Ryzen 5 PRO 5650 is such a headache to work with sometimes. As software becomes more and more layered the more computing power we need for the same amount of application (AI applications and workflows only make this worse)

Absolutely wild to see a $150 drop-in upgrade outperforming the "best of the best" from when I put together my mid-range rig at the end of 2018. Back in the market after I finally decided my Ryzen 5 2600X and GTX 1660 weren't cutting it anymore. I've upgraded to an RX6700XT and will be dropping in a Ryzen 5 5600X as soon as I can.
Wait for the 5700X3D to drop and grab that or get a 5700X. Worth the extra cheddar for 8 cores
@@josh4434 Why? The performance difference between the 5600x and 5700x in video games is negligible. Maybe the 3d for more cache, but it's hard to argue with an $150 5600x.

Also helps you are using an AMD gpu, they help out "slower" cpu's a lot more. Nvidia has way more driver overhead. One of the reasons my 4790k lasted me from 2014 to 2020 with AMD gpu's.
Lasted for what, exactly? I've been running an i5-4690K and GTX 1080 since 2017 and I've not been held back.
@@TheBcoolGuy Oh you are, in fact that 1080 is being bottlenecked HARD in remotely modern titles. Even BF1 in 2016 a 4690K was a stutterfest. 4c4t at that IPC is dead. I'd grab a cheap high clocked 4c8t Xeon off Ebay if I were you. Even my 4790k with a Vega 56 (roughly equivalent to a GTX1080 these days) is cpu bound in many titles and that's paired with 32gb c10 ddr3 2400mhz.
Even my current 11900k with dual rank 32gb c14-14-14 ddr4 3733 bottlenecks my 6900XT at times now.
personally i started to buy chinese laptop cpus for my 6/7/8/9 gen intel boards i come across.
6c/12t OC enabled samples that are good for around 4.2ghz (5ghz if your willing to go 8c/16t but those are getting too pricey)
6 core variants are only like 70 dollars CAD for a 10th gen laptop variant that will work in all 6-9th gen intel boards, if your lucky rebar is supported (i have a z270i strix with a QQLS 8c/16t with rebar on :D)
I was at the 9900k launch event. My confidential 9900k is still in my kids system.
I sold my 9900k and Z390 mobo earlier this year. I replaced it with the I5 13600k, which does everything. Unless you can get the 9900k for $45-$50, it makes no sense to purchase this over the Ryzen 5000 series.
Heck, just lately my wife's 8700k just started showing its age in alot of video and graphic design jobs we just decided to upgrade her mini itx 8700k/5700XT system with a new Lenovo Legion Laptop with AMD 7745HX cpu and rtx 4070 and man, its a night and day difference!
Can't wait to brag about, "I've been here since 4k subs!!"

as much as i loved my i9 i knew it was time to upgrade when i was playing cyberpunk with my new 7900 xtx (was previously on a 3070) and i was getting far more stutters with an i9 and 7900 xtx in cyberpunk opted for a ryzen 9 7900x cpu and was night and day differance jesus christ i was skeptical of going amd for cpu since my last cpu i used from them was a bulldozer 6 core nothing but problems so just always opted for intel since then... amd have come a long way and im glad theres now competition in both pricing and performance from them now

6 cores and 6 threads do not feel good these days. Goes over 5 GHz, which is nice, but doesn't help that much.
I think Ryzen 3000 was available at that time and I really should have taken a look in to them.
I made a large error buying the 3700X over a 9600K, sure the 8 cores were cool but they were slow as hell and ran my favorite game at 80 fps while a friend with a 7600K was getting 144 easy.
A used 8700K in 2019 was probably what we both should have bought.

The main issue with the i9 9900k or KS is the pricing. They are not worth it and they have to be clocked to 5GHZ to compete IPC wise with less power hungry chips running far cooler and quieter. For productivity the X99 chips are not far off if not equal so the value isn't there atm. Also don't forget that 8/16 core CPU's are getting incredible cheap on both sides of the spectrum from AMD's Ryzen 7 line to intel's Xeon's. This Halo product will remain relevant for a bit longer but definitely not worth its Halo price tag
It's 5700X money and a 5700X can be slotted into a PCB for £25 used and get within a couple of percent of it's performance limits with a couple of toggles and relatively modest cooling solution. Chips like the 9900K make no sense in the current market, you can do more with less outlay and lower power consumption, so unless you literally are doubling up your build as a space heater (and some in cold climates do, why spend money just heating air when you can do both at once with an Intel right?) then these really have little use.
Worst part is Intel mindset is still stuck in most people. They are still selling 4c/8t i7s for 150€+!!
Flagship CPUs always command a good secondhand market price. I bought my 9900K for about $1000 AUD a few yeses ago and sold it a couple of years later for $900 AUD within half an hour of putting it up on eBay. Here in Australia I still see 3rd and 4th Gen i7s regularly sell for $100+ AUD. Crazy to think about but it’s true.
People still pay good money for CPUs like the 7700K It's disgusting.

My 15 year old son games on a rig that runs the i9-9900 low-power T version out of my old Lenovo mini PC combined with a Phantom Gaming 6750xt on a basic 310 mobo. Works perfectly for him.
Still rocking my i9 9900K, still holds on today pretty well all core OC to 5.0Ghz but man does it draw a lot of power and produce a lot of heat. I think I'll upgrade next year to the 15th Gen intel CPU's but I'll definitely keep my i9 especially as I have the cool box it came in.

10900k, the 9900k was rhe best cpu before 10th gen and Ryzen 5000.

Bought one last year in a craigslist system that had no gpu and storage drive but the price was right. $80 for cpu, ram, mobo, case, cooler and psu lol.
Yeah, I have a couple of B-Die kits and I haven't been able to fully get DDR4-4000 to work with the 9900k. I also have a Gigabyte z390 Aorus Master and a z370 Gaming 7 board, which are both excellent lga1151/300 boards..... but I wonder if Gigabyte 1151/300 boards don't handle Memory OC's very well.
I came across a 10700k a year and a half ago and it had ZERO problems working with 4000MT/s RAM and it would even overclock to 5.2GHz quite easily. The board I used was the Asus Strix Z590-A. I paid a bit less for both of these combined than what a single 9900k is goes for.
A couple other notes from my time with the three 9900k CPU's I've owned. I'm still using one in my media PC with a 3070.
It runs like h3ll with the Cooler Master 212 EVO. I only used this because I was already using it with an i5-8600k that I had in a system. The 9900k/212 is mostly fine when gaming, but Cinebench or folding will make the clocks scale back.
My Asus Prime Z370-A can't deal with the 9900k very well. It might be fine when gaming, but even with a good CPU cooler the clocks will scale back. When I tried overclocking my 9900k to 5.0Ghz, the system would shut off when running Cinebench r23. Prime95 is out of the question. I tried Throttlestop and the with the Z370-A board the system still shut off. This is not a problem when I have tried the 9900k with the Maximus X Apex, Gigabyte Aorus Z370 Gaming 7, and Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master.
The first 9900k I had only overclocks to 5.0GHz at +1.3v, and the other two could hit 5.1GHz with +1.3v, but the last two are the later stepping version. When overclocked, these even challenged a 280mm AIO cooler when running stress tests.
Yea gigabyte boards are awful. I have a z690i ultra lite and cant consistently get more than 3600MHz out of my 2x16GB Bdie Kit
I actually had a z390 aorus ultra with my 9900kf that ran 32gb 4000mhz c14 ram no problem, I thought it was normal till I watched this video and started reading the comments
@@RardyGuy a few days after posting that comment i returned to the issue again and got 4000c16 running stable after like half an hour of tuning VCCSA and VDDQ
@@BonusCrook mine just worked off xmp but the the xmp had a crazy high voltage, I had to put a fan on the ram or it wouldn't be stable

there is no way your 9900k was only stable at 3200 cl16, something probably went wrong there and your current non bdie should definitely run at least at 3800mt/s with that chip. But anyways even with that terrible memory 9900k really shows how great it was/is in many tests it manages to compete against zen 3, much newer arch

There are z370 boards with the VRMs to handle the 9900k. They are just very rare. My Aorus Z370 Gaming 7 for instance has the same VRMs as the z390 they put out. So you can get away with it on this board. There is also an Asus model that does the same. More than that I have not found personally yet.

My 9900k runs at 53/52/51/50/50/50/50 Turbo ratios with 1.420v vcore in bios with LLC medium. 1.255v under load for 5ghz all core and 53ghz single core AVX2 stable. CPU score for timespy is 12988 and my R15 score is 2125 for multi and 223 for single.
