  • DUSK is an old-school throwback FPS made in 2018 by David Szymanski. It strongly invokes the spirit of classical titles in the genre, especially the likes of Quake and Blood. Though DUSK was not the first to the resurgence, it is easily among the most influential and beloved games to come from it. Several years later, now that the throwback FPS subgenre has gained widespread popularity, I want to analyze one of the titles that truly kickstarted the resurgence to see how well it held up.

I'm definitely less coherent than usual in this episode. Byproduct of slowly chipping away at this for a longer period of time than most other episodes.

Hey everyone! After way too long in limbo, I'm glad to get this video out. I forced myself to complete it in time for Halloween, which had the unfortunate consequence of me leaving more of my ramblings in than usual. The Weapons section is probably the most egregious it's ever gotten. Hunter Dan also permanently occupies the bottom right corner because I'm forgetful, but I doubt anyone will complain about the constant presence of the demigod himself.
I neglected to mention the multiplayer feature. As far as I'm aware, it's basically Quake 3 but Dusk. Wouldn't have had much to say. Dusk also doesn't have a true left-handed mode (as you might assume from some later footage), but it does have a secret mode that inverts the world, including your handedness.
Also, the Tim Golden thing is an in-joke specifically put in to mess with my friends, so don't think about it too much.

This video truly is the culmination of the entire MarriedToMyChair cinematic universe.(The MTMCCU)
When Tim Golden said "We're all Golden now" I felt that. RIP to this legend.

Good to see another review from you. I don't know if you have any interest in old Nintendo games from the '80s, but there's an interesting game I found out about. The game is called "Nozo no Murasame Joh" or the mysterious Murasame Castle. The reason I think you would find this interesting is because this game is actually a sister game to the original legend of Zelda. It was built off the same engine and everything. While Zelda is a slower paste adventure game, Murasame Castle is a fast-paced top down shooter where you play as a samurai fighting endless amounts of ninjas. (But then again, what else do you do when you're a video game samurai?) There's some issues with the game. Mainly the fact that you can only move up, down, left, or right with no diagonals do to how the engine was made. But overall I think it's a fun game that I think even has the original legend of Zelda beat. (Even though I will say that's not really a hard thing to do considering the original Zelda didn't age all that well in my opinion.) I think you can still get it on 3DS virtual console, but it has been recently added to the Nintendo switch online service. I don't know if it's the type of game you would want to play or do a review of but I think it would make for interesting research nonetheless. So what do you think?

Sounds funky. However, I don't have any Nintendo consoles. It not being abandonware could pose an issue there. I'll at least write it down. It's not the kind of thing I would usually cover, but one of the next games I'm considering making a video on is also effectively an endless wave shooter. I am thinking of experimenting with a shorter, more condensed video format, so it could happen.

I have another idea of a game you could cover. It's called Shadow caster and it is abandoneware. It's an FPS with role playing elements developed by Raven software and Origin systems. And the reason it hasn't seen re-release is because Origin is owned by EA now. It's a game where you play as a person who is a shape shifter from another reality. The protagonist's grandfather tells him that he is who he is and that he might be the Savior of their race. Because the antagonist of the game is destined to be the destroyer of the shape shifters. However, unlike all the other shapeshifters whose destinies are known by the gods the protagonist's destiny is not. It's like a SHADOW was CAST over his fate. (Get it)? What do you think of this suggestion?

@@RobbieJennings-cd6cp I have seen this one before. It's interesting as a Wolf3D-Doom engine transitional title, though I could imagine it being a pain to play since I'm not a big fan of pre-verticality FPS games. I'll keep it in mind, but there are quite a few games I'm more interested in covering.
I should mention that I already have the game for my next (regular) episode picked, and it's a open-world indie pseudo dungeon crawler. It's the kind of ambitious and quirky game that makes stumbling through Steam's back catalogs rewarding. Also, it's pretty much undocumented, so I feel extra obligated to make a video on it.

When I clicked on the video I was like "How is Dusk flawed? DUSK is perfect." Now I'm like "Yeah, you're right... yeah, yeah, there's that too". But damn. Do I LOVE this game. Great in depth review. I totally agree with you on the crossbow. Never saw its real use outside of these forced "made for the crossbow" sections. It mostly sat in my inventory, watching me use the sniper rifle instead.
