      No, the bear was after the kayaker, they cross at a different pace. That bear was on a mission. The kayaker is lucky the river was wide in that area and deep enough where he was forcing the bear to swim to reach him.

You brought up the "elk", well the bear slowed down his pace considerably after he closed-in on the other side of the river and was closer than the Kayaker was. So he clearly thought the Kayaker was a threat to this food!

      Screwballs right? Then the video cuts off just before the raft they are filming from, drifts towards the bear. Did the bear cross to the other side? Did the bear 180 back to shore. Did it maul the raft. We just won't ever know.

    I live in West Vancouver. The greater Vancouver area has about 2.5m residents. Squamish is 47 minutes away (56km). And that’s a Grizzly Bear ... welcome to Canada!

    It seems in Grizzly bear attacks and encounters, or even wild animal attacks and encounters, they always say "this is so rare, it just never happens here." Meanwhile thousands of bear and wild animal attack accounts and videos abound!

      the Squamish Hospital is close by. Cougars, bobcat, and bear are often seen within sight of the Emergency Entrance!!! (I did the reno before the 2010 Winter Olympics there. January was hilarious and full of livestock; freezing snow cover brought the cats into the hospital and town grounds looking for meece. Bears were fast asleep.

    Just goes to show how unpredictable wild animals can be. Whether or not the bear is just crossing the river or not, this is a grizzly bear, if and when it is hungry it will go after anything for a meal.

    Odd how the locals and the news reporters downplay the risks involved. Bears are wild animals, which are carnivorous, territorial, predatory, and can be unpredictable. Everyone going in or near their natural habitats should be fully versed in expert advice, precautions, and responses. Take all encounters seriously, and keep maximum distance. Be safe! 😁👍

    Looks like the bear is just crossing the river. And if there was a dead elk on the other side, as indicated in the commentary, I'm sure the bear was more interested in the dead elk than the kayaker.
