His mother is the worst kind of person because she believes status is the only thing that matters. She doesn't understand that it's the character of the person that really counts. She's been protecting Lianfang for so long that she can't see how her behavior has escalated. I'm glad that Lingyi is smarter than his mother. He isn't blinded by Lianfang's status. He judges her according to her character. Shiyi is really lucky to have a husband like him.

Honestly watching Shiyi try so hard to reassure them that she's not upset makes me almost cry. That weird insistent feeling of making sure others are happy, regardless of how you feel...I guess it hit a nerve😅
She probably thinks she can avoid trouble if she stays passive. Chinese harem girls have been known to literally kill each other for the most coveted position in the harem, if you're the legal wife you're the most powerful woman in the room but if you're the favorite than you're the most influential one. Shiyi grew up in one so she knows how competitive it can be and with a matron like Madam Luo, I'd imagine Shiyi would rather avoid conflict than incite it. Bold women are often obvious targets since women in the day would likely have been expected to be gentle and demure. If Shiyi isn't favored she'll be seen as less of a threat to the other concubines, and she can investigate her mother's murder with little interference. Plus, Shiyi doesn't have a particularly high opinion of harem people because of her childhood experience, she might just not care enough about the Xu family to be bothered by them.
She wasn't pretending. She wanted to live the Xu mansion to go and investigate their other properties. The GM wanted to expel her to protect Danyang/Shiyi used that moment to escape the watchful eyes of the GM to finish her investigation. When she was at the other location she didn't find the clues she needed so when he brought her back it wasn't a problem. Remember she found out that the Xu family stores their old fabrics in a different location/that's the place that the GM was sending her to so it all worked out for her. Now she's back and everyone knows that Lingyi disregarded his mother's wishes to bring her back.
After seeing this story several times. I am amazed at Great Madam. For all their honor and saving face. You think that she would show gratitude to her daughter in law's as it was Shiyi's Grandfather who saved their family after the father and brother were killed.
She’s the status driven kind. Even today in China old hags like her are rampant. It’s a sad state of reality.
The reason why she didn't show gratitude to Shiyi is because of her low birth status. It's the same reason why she never gave Shiyi credit for saving the Xu family every time Lianfang created problems. The GM is very ignorant at this point and she places too much value on the wrong things. If she valued a person's character then Shiyi ould win automatically. However, she places more importance on birth status/that's why she continues to fawn over Lianfang.
The GM did this to Yuanang - Shiyi’s late sister. Yuanang did have respect from both GM and Lingi (and maybe all Xu family members). Shiyi was not treated well because of some reasons. 1- GM thinks Shiyi schemed with Yuanang to be married to Lingi as the next wife, especially this harmed Lianfang who she considered daughter. 2- birth status: Shiyi is not daughter of legal wife. 3- shiyi is not GM’s choice for Xu family’s matron position. She want Lianfang instead of Shiyi.
I'm so glad that Shiyi has Lingyi in her corner because his mother is a piece of work. She's knowingly putting a concubine above the legal wife over and over again. She's a horrible judge of character and she shouldn't be the matriarch of this family because she can't see the forest from the trees.
You know in reality back in those times for a family of that status having a concubine controlling the household over the legal wife would have made them a veritable laughingstock. The gossip would have completely ruined their reputation. Bet the GM would behave herself then. Having a concubine born as the legal wife would have made things harder for her inside the house but they would have even more strictly followed decorum because of it, mostly for fear of the gossip that would happen if they didn't.

Thank you...The GM created an opportunity for her to leave/she used it so that she could continue investigating her mother's death. Once she learned that the Xu family kept their old fabrics at a different location she was trying to figure out her next move. The GM's desire to send her away to keep safeguard Danyang's pregnancy was the opportunity she needed. Shiyi has a mean poker face. They didn't even suspect that she wanted to leave. She played her hand brilliantly.
Lianfang's been wrong since the very beginning. She sees only what she wants to see/right now she doesn't want to see that Lingyi is starting to have feelings for Shiyi. She doesn't want to see that he favors her. She's convinced herself that the only reason he went against the GM's wishes is because she's his legal wife. I would almost feel sorry for her if she wasn't so damn evil...lol
@@shontelagrone8713 The problem with the majority is that they believe that people around them should think and act the way they do or want to. GM and Lianfang didn't realize that Shiyi might have her own motives for leaving. For Shiyi, almost everyone in the Xu family is outsiders. The only ones she worries about are Zhun and Dong Qing. They do not let her near the boy, and the maid is next to her. She treats her husband with respect, but at this stage she does not need him. So she has no reason to resist leaving, the more she gets rid of society that is undesirable for her. Shiyi didn't even have to come up with an excuse to go to the manor, she was provided with it. GM and Lianfang are stupid women with excessive pride.
I think Lingyi still firmly believes that he cares about Shiyi ONLY because she is his lawful wife. A big misconception. His behavior suggests that this is far from the case. He was too upset when he found out about his wife. I like the way he arranged the interrogation of Lianfang. God, she's so stupid. If before the story with Shiyi, he still felt some kind of pity for Lianfang, now he only has suspicions. Qiao thinks that her "innocent" face deceived him. Silly, stupid girl. And her excuses once again show her as an irresponsible and narrow-minded person. Shiyi is a smart girl, she made the right conclusions about her husband. How beautifully she "walked along" Lianfang, but Qiao once again did not hear the warning.
Shiyi was a brilliant strategist. She knew how to adapt to any given situation and that was her greatest strength. The GM/Lianfang continued to underestimate her because of her birth status/that's why they continued to lose. They wanted to expel her from the family thinking that it would benefit them but they never expected that they were giving her exactly what she wanted. They unknowingly helped her investigate her mother's case. They didn't count on Lingyi's outrage/response to her absence. They assumed that he would continue being filial to his mother. They never expected him to go against her. You see the GM didn't take responsibility for kicking Shiyi out. She set back and let Lingkuan that the blame for her actions. Honestly when the GM stood back and let her son take the blame I understood why she favored Lianfang. She sees herself in Lianfang. They're two very dark peas in a twisted pod. You noticed everyone's deer in the headlights look when he asked where Shiyi was...lol They were all pathetic/never took into account how he would react. It's the first sign of things to come.
Shiyi was brilliant the way she handled the situation...I never understood why so people were condemning her response to Lianfang's actions. They wanted her to fight back but she handled things in the right manner. She knew Lingyi was suspicious. The Luo family tried really hard to cover for Shiyi but their behavior was completely off/it made piqued his interest. While Lianfang continued to draw attention to Shiyi's absences. She used the opportunity to lay suspicion at Lianfang's door step. Lianfang's biggest mistake was faking concern for Shiyi in order to tag along. Lingyi knows first hand how selfish she is so for her to be concerned about someone else it's out of character for her. Plus her constant nagging and disrespect in the Luo manor concerning Shiyi's whereabouts was another dead giveaway. Shiyi turned the situation around to her advantage with a few simple words. Now Lingyi was her sword. Lianfang is too stupid to realize that now she was in Lingyi's cross hairs. Lianfang is playing checkers. While Shiyi is playing chess. She's always one step ahead of Lianfang because she thinks ahead whereas Lianfang can only see the move that's right in front of her. She never plans ahead and she doesn't know how to adapt. She is the weakest link...lol

All the rest behave in full accordance with the proverb: "Everyone judges for himself." @@Irynash11 she was a brilliant strategist. I agree whenever she has to deal with an issue within the family especially dealing with the GM she chooses the best strategy to win. It was very different to how Yuanniang handled herself when dealing with Lingyi. She chose to handle things by getting angry while belittling him in the process. She never took into account what he wanted or his motives behind his actions. She was so upset that he chose to help others instead of gaining another status. She didn't try to understand his point of view or his overall goal. She focused on what was lost instead of the overall gain for the people. Lingyi wanted to honor his father/brother's sacrifice by fighting for the sea ban but Yuanniang couldn't see pass her own selfish motives. My favorite GM take down had to be the rice cake incident. Lianfang tried to make it appear that Shiyi was being harsh to Zhun by refusing to give him the rice cake. Per usual the GM jumped on the bandwagon and proceeded to criticize her. Shiyi took her down with a facts/a simple explanation. Of course. She was brilliant/ended up backing the GM into a corner. Of course the GM is an idiot...lol Her only response was "You should've said that earlier"..lol Seriously she didn't give her the opportunity to tell her the reasoning behind her refusal to allow him the eat the rice cake. She just blindly followed Lianfang's logic. Every time Lianfang opened her mouth in defiance to Shiyi the GM supported her. She didn't give it a second thought it was always "Lianfang is right"...she was such a tool.
Yes, their guilty faces was priceless. They really thought that Lingyi wouldn't be affected by Shiyi's absences. I wonder if they actually thought he wouldn't notice her absence. After their last encounter before he let there was "NO" way he was going to forget about her...lol She gave him a verbal smack down before he left the premises. Yes, the way Lingyi chose to handle the reasoning behind Shiyi's absence went over the GM's head. Honestly she wasn't a very intelligent person at all especially where Lianfang is concerned. I mean common sense went over her head big time. It never occurred to her that every time she went to the temple there was always an ominous sign about Shiyi. Instead of investigating things she just jumped on the bandwagon and proceed to relentlessly punish her. The reality is the GM wanted to stay in the dark. She didn't want to deal with things that were related to Lianfang. Her hear no evil, see no evil approach dealing with all of Lianfang's action nearly destroyed the family she claimed to love so much.

I love how he looked at the evil concubine. It’s like he is really holding it in. He doesn’t buy her fakeness.. pretending to be classy, smart and all sweet yet so rotten and evil. Murderer some more. The maid also encouraging her telling her what she wants to hear.. not what she needs.

What you propose is not possible according to the traditions of that time. Divorce means shame and, in fact, a quick death (the chances that such a woman will be helped by her family tend to zero). Even a widow could not remarry (a woman should belong to only one man). Lingyi also acts nobly by not divorcing Qin, who is barren (he has every right to do so).
