We were there at the end of April and traveled to Punta Cana for the last 15 years.. We keep hearing about all those cases - the main problem is that nobody knows the root cause. Few cases indicate that problem was with drinks in room's mini-bar - but it is not final conclusion. These type of accidents happened not only in Dominican Republic - but in almost every destination. Is America/Canada safer? It all comes to basics - stay aware, choose what you do and what you eat/drink. Our suggestion when travelling south for food/drinks -> try to eat only boiled and fried food, and drink bottled water and bottles (alcohol) that were opened in front of you.

Planning a trip for January, any one have info on the seaweed problem engulfing Caribbean beaches effecting punt Cana?
I would not worry about seaweed - resorts are cleaning it regularly.
Can you access Riu Bambu and Riu Nairobi if you are staying at the macao?
Yes, you can. The are part of the same chain. You can also walk around other resorts as well

Literally just got back from this hotel yesterday along with hundreds of other people. We felt safe the whole time. Oh btw... we drank all the alcohol. Quit believing the hype.
