My local veterinary clinic is pretty good, but I was a bit taken aback when I asked one vet her thoughts on diet. Her recommendation was twice daily feeding with kibble. Apparently I'm not capable of ensuring my dog doesn't suffer nutritional deficiencies. It's one point of difference and after switching my dog to a raw diet in the past few weeks, I'm already noticing how much he's thriving and how good his condition is.
He had gastrointestinal issues when I first got him. He was passing large stools 6-8 times a daysnd a couple of those were quite liquid, while the rest looked hard and dry. He was also drinking larger amounts of water than seemed normal. Since switching to a fresh (mainly raw,, with some partially cooked), his digestive issues have ceased. He now passes firm but moist stools and shows no sign of any diahorea.
I'm currently feeding him approximately 60% protein from muscle meat (mammal, poultry and fish) and 15-20% offal of various types and species. The remaining 20-25% comprises fat, meaty bones and some vegetables, eggs and other similar additions.
I am fortunate enough to live right next to the ocean, so I'm also able to feed him fresh fish. I'm about to try harvesting some fresh seaweed to offer in very small amounts, along with another saltmarsh plant known as Samphire. I'm in Australia and we have a native plant known as New Zealand spinach, or Warrigal Greens and I'm keen to see if he'll eat a bit of that because it's loaded with vitamins and minerals. I am also thinking of collecting some cuttlefish backbone to crush and add as a calcium supplement. I already crush the shells of eggs and give him those.
I give him meaty bones to chew, but he has a tendency to bury them. I'm thinking I'll try wrapping some of them them in plastic and cloth and pulverising them with a hammer so I can add it to his food.

The Consumer Watchdog is looking at the Veterinary Industry and have been asking for feedback from the industry and service users, they're alarmed by the high costs being charged. The watchdog is also looking at the corporations that have been buying up private practices in the UK. For instance Assisi bought up a range of veterinary practices and Hollings products, then Assisi was bought up by an American company that develops technology equipment for the veterinary industry. So for instance, the vet closest to us is owned by the American company. That isn't our vet, I chose a small privately owned practice for my dog.
