Catching ROCKFISH In The Shallows! (Chesapeake Bay Kayak Fishing)

Summer has arrived and so have the fish in the Chesapeake Bay. Most of the rockfish in the middle sections of the Bay have been hanging out inside the rivers. On this trip I take my kayak to the West River to hit the shallows in search of our striped friends. It didn't take long before I found some willing to hit topwater. Great video- I went out trying topwater for rockfish for the first time this evening in the West and Rhode river. No rock but had a nice battle with a cow nosed ray. Will be trying again soon

Sweet video! Can't beat those topwater bites. I always keep some super glue in my bag for those zman lures. Just a dab at the base of the jighead will keep them in place all day.

I catch many rock fish in less than than 6 ft of water but I've never yet have caught one on a topwater.

How do you know the state of the fishery do you know personally with first-hand knowledge or going by what you're told from people who would never lie !

Going based on what I have seen over the years with time spent on the water and also data that has been collected. Other than in very small areas of the bay at certain times of year, you don’t see big schools of rockfish in the vast majority of the bay. Their population is undoubtedly hurting.
