      Thank you Keith for your response. Grammatically, both something and everything could be correct but there is a slight difference in nuance. Something indicates that she bought at least one item from the shelf; everything indicates that she bought all the items on the shelf. The construct of the sentence says 'that was on the shelf' which gives the impression that everything that was on the shelf is gone. 'Nothing' could also be correct because it would mean she bought not one thing that was on the shelf. So, grammatically, all three could be correct depending on the meaning intended to convey.
