It's incredible how this and Battle Squadron stand out from other 80's Amiga games in sound, graphics and playability.

A lot of it has to do with the fact that a good portion of those games were direct Atari ST ports. Banshee was also a pretty good one as well

There were many good shmups on the Amiga in vertical and horizontal view. The best ones are these using actual Amiga capabilities not arcade ports that were stripped down for worse platforms and then ported from these platforms to the Amiga. Amiga could do arcade erfect ports of most games from the 80's to mid-90's but conversion jobs were given to some shitty studios that were put under pressure of time.

@@mattx5499 Hybris and Battle Squadron should of been on the Amiga mini list straight away in fact should of been a priority. I guess they couldn't get the licence for a proper stunning Amiga games why they could only get the crap ones going by the games that comes with it from what i have been seeing.
I feel these people behind this type of project seems like there only in it for a quick buck money scheme and have no idea what games was truly iconic to what made the Amiga so good. There's are hardly no games on the list that shows of what this Amiga could truly do for its time for me it shows lack of care that has gone into this and lack of passion

One of the all time Amiga greats, sound, video, gameplay, it had it all in spades. Hard to believe Martin was still in school when he wrote this, what talent.

Pure arcade awesomeness on a home computer. I love how the ship doesn't look like in other games and the mechanics are really interesting. Perfect Amiga game from A to Z.

I've used to play this game a lot when I was at age 5-7, I remembering being incredibly frustrated by its difficulty but still I've played it like everyday. There are some quirks, tactics and secret stuff that I remember when I've played the game back in the days:
    1) you can expand your wings to provide barrier-piercing shots 3 times, but when you get new level of expansion it resets, so its wise to use it as much as possible
    2) when you are not expanded, your wings protect you and if you get hit by anything, you simply lose one level of expansion; however if something hits your "core" (the purple thing inside wings), you die instantly - so in unavoidable situation its better to "tank" the hit using wings instead of core
    3) when you are expaded, your "wings" are invulnerable, but hit on core is always fatal
    4) when you expand, for a brief moment your wings flash and you are invulnerable - you can use this feature to go from one side to another when fighting mothership (boss on every level) as they really spam with bullets and stuff on you. another use case is when you are near unavoidable death, you can gain a brief moment of relief using that
    5) you can lose your 1st level expansion, you will be at level 0 with only core. after a while, level 1 expansion will appear
    6) you have 3 uses of "super" which destroys every enemy on screen and removes all enemy projectiles. use it when stuff is going too hot. you can also use it when fighting mothership, as 3 uses will instantly destroy it (one destroys left wing, another one right wing and final one destroys the boss)
    7) as for expansion goes, damage/area wise 5th one is the best. however 4rd one on expanding makes your wings to float around you in a circle, providing almost inpenetrable shield for enemy ships/bullets and therefore is the safest way to play the game (you can go to 5th to recharge expansion charges and then get hit on wing to drop to 4th level again)
    8) two afterburners on 4th ship level will actually destroy enemy ships/projectiles and wont downgrade your ship - not really an useful feature but i'm impressed they've implemented it :)
    9) the "crab" enemy on 3rd level, the one on black background, must be pushed out of screen by shooting it. the distance its pushed on every shot depends on damage of the shot. unexpanded ship deals way more damage than expanded one and its preferable to fight it as non-expanded 5th level ship. if you happen to die, fighting the "crab" with 1st level ship is really painful as every shot barely moves it upwards
    10) on game menu screen, you can press space bar to access options menu where you can make game harder by increasing enemy rate of fire, bullet speed, etc.

Very good and colourful Arcade-like early shooter on the Amiga. I first played it in 1990 or 1991 when many good games came out for this machine and even then I still was quite impressed by Hybris. Fun fact: As far as I remember it didn't run with the RAM expansion to 1MB which nearly everybody got back then. I liked this game even more than comparable shoot em ups which were more advanced like SWIV or Battle Squadron.

Good evening, this game is really great, even today the transformations of the ship and the music make me dream, when my 500 was ruined, I cried at not being able to play this game anymore, I'm taking the 1200, one hope, and no, no more games from the 500 work, I discovered winuae in 2002, the only hope, I still had my 1200, I rushed to copy the bios and the diskettes, I got there, to emulate on PC , I think that these days I wouldn't know how to do it anymore.

Cool game! I played Hybris through numerous times, mainly because of music. Its a shame that one voice channel is muted during sound fx. Btw. there were some hidden treasures at some spots. They revealed only if you flew over them. But those were probably for some extra points. Nice to see also that you know the meaning of "flying silver object" that gives one smartbomb and temporary invulnerability. I've seen some retro players avoiding it like an enemy.
Oh, and there is one of those hidden treasures at 16:37 as I write this while watching! And also in 22:13. And one more at 30:17.
I wonder if someone chose K. Lovett when playing for the first time, as "Maverick" sounded so much cooler for a space pilot. Thanks for the memories!

    • @andreasoberg2021
      @andreasoberg2021 Před 2 lety +1

The reason they mute was just because of lack of channels. Was a bit problem with both C64 and Amiga. You just had so few channels.

I just realized that the dev/artist of Major Stryker seems to have stolen/adapted some artwork for that game from this - that turret looking thing at the bottom at 1:46 or its sprite anyway is a common enemy in Major Stryker. They did this with Duke Nukem/ Duke Nukem II etc. as well. *edit* - wow, it's not just that turret thing, it's certain ships etc. as well - can't believe how blatant their artistic plagiarism was.
