GRWM Time Travel Edition: 1850s Evening Ball

- I volunteer with my local APTA society and give lectures about the life of inhabitants of our town's Victorian history. Sometimes I get dressed to give an example of the man layers Victorian women use to wear. Due to Covid most of our events became Virtual including this video about getting ready for an evening ball.
I was asked to create something "flashy and festive" as this was a Christmas video so I decided to go for red to cheer everyone up during tough times.
Everything you see was created by myself with the exception of my chemise, drawers, fan, and gloves which are all extant examples from the 1850s.

It must have cost a fortune in those days to dress like that, so much fabric. It also must have been very hot in summer to wear so many layers. Also, heavy to walk in. I think for anyone who wasn't real slim, it would have been difficult to wear such constrictive clothing. But, it is indeed beautiful, elegant and very feminine. You look amazing in it. You are very creative and talented . Thanks for posting. I continue to look for more of your videos.

How did you get the flowery part on the top of your bodice to stay? Did you have to pin it to keep it from slipping down or was it just tight enough that it stayed? I made a dress in this style for my prom so I’m just really curious.
You can use hooks and eyes on the bodice and the bertha (flower part).
This "secret" was a mystery for me for a very long time 😄

The crinoline is really flexible! Everything bunches up when sitting down.
My sister did civil war re-enactments. I made her a red ball gown like this in satin. You look fantastic, but since my sister was a size 24, she looked like the kool-aid guy. 😂
