  • How similar are Turkish and Greek and to what extent can Turkish and Greek speakers understand one another? While being part of two different language families, because of the historical interactions they have had, the two languages and nations have a lot in common. There are many words in both languages which are derived from the other. In this video, Alexandra (Greek speaker) and Şimal (Turkish speaker) demonstrate some of the commonalities between the two languages through a list of words and sentences.

Greek (ελληνικά) is an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages with a written record of over 3,000 years, easily making it the oldest documented Indo-European language. The Greek alphabet, originating from the Phoenician script, was the basis of numerous other scripts, such as Latin, Cyrillic, Coptic, Gothic, and Armenian. The Greek language has virtually impacted other languages in every corner of the world, being an important component of Western civilization, the Christian religion, and the language of some of the fundamental texts of science, astronomy, and mathematics. The Greek language today holds official status in Greece and Cyprus, and is recognized as a minority language in Albania, Armenia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, and Ukraine.
The Turkish language (Türkçe), which is also referred to as Istanbul Turkish, is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages, with most of its native speakers living in Western Asia, and significant group of speakers in Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Northern Cyprus, Greece, the Caucasus, and other parts of Europe and Central Asia. Ottoman Turkish, which was a variation of the Turkish spoken today, influenced many parts of Europe during the time that the Ottoman Empire expanded. When the modern Turkish republic was established, one of Atatürk's Reforms consisted of changing the Ottoman Turkish alphabet with a Latin alphabet. Today, Turkish is recognized as a minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Iraq, Macedonia, and Romania.

When I was 10 I asked my father if we hated Turks because we're Greek. He said "Has a Turk done anything to you?" I said no and he said "Then why would you hate someone who has never hurt you?" I didn't know. I said but didn't they kill my great-great grandfather in the war of independence? He said yes but added the only one who can apologize is the Turk who killed him and the only one who can accept is your GG Grandfather. Then he explained, if we keep the chains of hate intact, we curse the next generation to feel nothing but hate for things that happened hundreds of years ago. I will not curse you, my son whom I love, by teaching you hate. No Turk alive as every done me or you any harm. I'm breaking the chain of hate so it can't continue into your generation. Now you're free. When you become a man, I encourage to visit Turkey and meet the people. Offer your hand in friendship and you'll probably receive friendship in return. Then, visit the land of your ancestors next door. Never allow hate to curse your children's generation, let them be free as well. Then he added "We are Greek in heritage but you are born Canadian and I chose Canada to live,...and as Canadians, we don't hate anyone...so remember that." I thank him for the tools he has left me and I do remember. Love this video, as it brought back this memory.

I believe that many Turks already know that many Turkish loan words that are used in the Greek language add the -i as a suffix. I would like to explain why for anyone who is a language nerd like me and would like to learn why this happens. First of all, all greek words have to end in a specific suffix. Thats just how our grammar is. The greek language has 3 grammatical genders. Male, female and neuter. I have noticed that almost every turkish loan word which ends in a consonant and is a noun, becomes a neuter gender word in greek. Neuter genders have usually two possible suffixes, either -o or -i. It seems that we chose to give mostly the -i suffix in those turkish loan words, but there are also some with an -o (like yelek which becomes γιλέκο/ yileko). However, turkish loan words which dont end in a consonant, do not take the -i (or -o) suffix. Those words, usually become male gender words if they are nouns by adding an s. Some examples have been actually used in this video and are "leke" which becomes λεκές (lekes), yaka which becomes γιακάς (yakas) , mentese which becomes μεντεσές (menteses).
Those things only apply to nouns though, as adjectives depend on the person you are refering to. The word "tembel" for example which is also used in the greek language, can be either τεμπέλης (tembelis) for a man and tembela (τεμπέλα) for a woman.
I hope i didnt bore you all with too much detail. Good job for the video and greetings to Turkey from Greece!

K B I see. For Istanbul Linguists have determined that its from EIS stin Poli, but the "I" adding may just also be a coincidence in the language as well. Eis was used by the Byzantine Greeks a lot, and sounds more like "Is" despite it being spelled "Eis" in my Greek to English Transliteration. Like the Greek Name Irene is spelled: Eirini but is more like Irini. Hope that helps, and thanks for that information 🙌🏻

Merhaba to all our Turkish neighbours watching the video! Our countries are very close together and that's something we should connect, not fight, over. I recently started learning some Turkish and I can already recognise words that we also have in Greek. I didn't realise that many of the words in this video actually existed in both languages!

Such division was planned to control the Middle East for trade routes through Suez and the oil from Basra.

All my relatives from my mother's side were born and raised in Istanbul or Constantinople as we still call it. It's the city were my grandparents were born, raised, were their parents are burried, were they fell in love and started a family and at the end from where they were forced to leave. Never have I ever heard them talk negatively or raised their kids or me to hate Turkey or its people. On the contrary, they made sure I knew only the facts, the good and the bad. For example, they were Turkish military that searched for Greeks, destroying their homes and putting them on fire when they were under 10years old, but they were also Turkish people the ones that had hidden them and made sure to not let them being found. My childhood was filled with both cultures, my grandparents always talked in turkish when they didn't want me to understand something or just to tease me, we always listened to turkish music too or watched movies or shows. I even ended up getting to know my grandparent's turkish friends and be friends with their kids.
Are all Greeks fond of Turks?Hell no, but things are shifting. Depending on where you are in Greece, how educated people are and what's their age there are huge differences. Like, I'm sure if I was visiting a remote village of Turkey, people would have been more hostile towards me.
At the end, all I know is when I visited Istanbul last year for the first time, I felt like home and among people I was familiar to and that says something. 🇬🇷🇹🇷

Here's a surprise fun fact 😉 The word "efendim" which means "my lord" and more commonly used as a polite "what (did you say)?" in Turkish, originates from the modern Greek "aphentēs" "αφέντης", and old Greek "authentēs" meaning master. On the other hand, the Greek "γιαούρτι" or international word "yoghurt" which is "yoğurt" in Turkish, originates from the verb "yoğurmak" which means "to knead" in Turkish. Thank you for this much wanted video you three!! 😊

It’s probable that the earliest yogurt was made by accident in Mesopotamia around 5,000 BC, when milk-producing animals were first domesticated. By 2,000bc it is estimated that about half of the human population was accustomed to eating dairy products.
