What a treat from the Golden Age of bicycles. That would've been somebody's pride and joy, and justifiably so. From the days when there were still sizeable 'independent' cycle makers who competed for sales in the lucrative high-end market by offering unique and advanced features. It was this competition which stimulated development of many features we now take for granted, but some ingenious designs were relegated to the history books as mergers, and standardisation, took place a short time later.

Didn’t think I’d find this interesting, but it’s fascinating!

Neat bike. I was lucky enough to rebuild a 1951 New Hudson Silver Arrow last year. That one was after they merged with BSA. These earlier bikes have a lot of character.

I wonder if you might be able to seal the pie plate and drain plug with a bit of thick grease, just a thought. The oil will i guess mostly sit below the rear access cover so shouldn't be too much of a problem there.
Don't think I'd touch the hubs if they're good as they are oil lubricated.
    Love the brake mechanisms.

Curious if you can add some small o-rings or copper crush washers where there might be leaks for the chain case?

Hi Rowan, big fan of your CZcams channel, I posted a couple of things in October to your Dutch Bikes Facebook page, but they are still pending which is disheartening. I would like to see a video on setting up rod brakes for the Gazelle Populair, I can't find any information and why do Gazelle chain tensioners fall apart I've been through 4 setting up my bike, now I ignore them, is there an alternate and finally I have bought a Sturmey Archer plastic trigger (like the stock Gazelle) and I have three broken ones the design is so bad, how to set them up, and any alternatives, that don't stick out or look clunky. Thanks, Oh and Continental Ride Classic Cream are impossible to find in 40-635 and the Schwalbe ones are too custard not off white, any thoughts?

I set up the Dutch Bikes In Britain group on my old account which later locked me out. I had no other admins and i had the Post Approval setting activated. Also new member approval. Therefore it’s defunct.

I have done videos on the gazelle interconnected rod brakes, and also I overhauled them in my renovation of a Gazelle Speciaal in 2001.
