  • Hi Everyone,
Well I’ve completed the first 600 miles on the new 2023 MT-07.
Join me to hear my thoughts and experiences on the bike after the first 600 miles.
I’ll be taking you on a quick 30 minute ride across the Kent and Sussex countryside in the UK as I make my way to Oakley Motorcycles, in Maidstone, Kent (a Yamaha dealer), in order for them to perform the 600 mile service and also to fit a Yamaha OEM QuickShifter.
As always feel free to comment and I look forward to you joining me for the ride.

Some of the points you mentioned in the video. I’ve not experienced the same gear issues you’ve mentioned, I’ve gone into false neutral a couple of times from my own errors. The jolting into first gear at stand still is cause from the straight cut gears, nothing to worry about if it’s just a small jolt, if you reverse the bike backwards before stopping and going into first, that can exacerbate the jolt. The on-off snatchy feeling can be two things in play, 1. The bike uses traditional cable throttle instead of ride by wire, which is more computerised. 2. The characteristics of the engine is a blessing and a curse, with the way the engine is fueled. A plug in tune can soften this a lot, and also reduce the strong engine braking.

Good info. I think you and I are in agreement with all of that. 👍
I’ve just collected my bike with the new Yamaha quick shifter fitted now.
I had a little ride around and tried some roll on’s from about 25 mph in second up to about 80 in sixth, holding each gear and then changing up with the quick shifter.
The bike behaved perfectly, whereas before it would struggle up through the gears.
It’s early days, but that’s a positive sign.
      Best performance yet. 😃👌
The dealer that did the service said he’d be happy to investigate the gear issue under warranty if the problem persists.
So I’m happy. Hopefully fresh oil and a quick shifter has solved it. 🤞
      Watch this space 👀

I bought a 2023 MT-07 a couple of weeks ago, only done 130 miles on it so far but not had any issues changing gear yet, only thing I have noticed is it can be a bit violent putting into 1st when it's cold. Loving the bike though, bought it with a full Akra system and a quickshifter, baffles out is obnoxiously loud if you don't wear earbuds (which I do) Mind if I ask how much your 600 mile service cost you? I'll need mine done in a few weeks but have discovered online the cost varies all over the country. PS, the dealer you went to is less than a mile from where I was born and raised, but he wasn't there when I started riding in 1987.

      Hey buddy, thanks for that.
As for the cost, I’m picking it up on Saturday morning, so not too sure yet. I chatted to the dealer today and I think he said that the service cost was about £140 (could be wrong there), when I spoke to P&H Motorcycles in Crawley where I bought the bike, they told me about £200. I’ll reply again on Saturday and give you a more accurate answer.
Akra exhaust sounds awesome. I’m definitely considering one for the future.
I’ve noticed that occasional violent cold 1st gear selection too.

I bought my MT-07 new in December and the 600 mile service cost me £143. I don't know if this varies. 👍

Most Yamaha bikes clunk hard going into 1st gear, it’s nothing to worry about man

Cost of my service worked out at £144.49 plus vat, so £173.39.
I paid more as they supplied and fitted a quick shifter for me as well as the standard service.
      The service cost breaks down as;
      Service £96.60
      Environmental charge £1.99
      Consumables £4.00
      Oil £25.87
      Gasket £2.66
      Oil Filter £13.37
This lot adds up to £144.49 then there’s VAT on top.
      Hope that helps buddy.
Just to add, I’m really happy with Bradley and the team at Oakley Motorcycles, Maidstone. They were really helpful, happy to answer my stupid questions and did everything they said they would within the time scales promised.
      Flawless performance 👍

That doesn't sound unreasonable, I'll use that quote as a bargaining chip if my local dealer tries to rip me off. Luckily I have a quick shifter fitted already from new so a bit of money saved there. Thanks for the info, I would take it to Oakleys based on that but I live in Southampton now :(@@TeamOrrCrew

Don’t be afraid to load up the engine to the max said rev in the manual u want those rings to expand in the cylinder!!!

I know running-in invites lots of different methods and theories.
Race teams for instance employ the ‘hard’ run in method as they generally don’t have the time for a ‘soft’ run in. But, the engines undergo continuous and rigorous maintenance, unlike most road bikes.
The MT-07 Yamaha manual states, no ‘prolonged’ operation above 5,000 rpm in the first 600 miles at the 600 mile point an oil and filter change is required. Then no ‘prolonged’ operation above 6,000 rpm until 1,000 miles.
That’s pretty much what I’ve been doing. 5,000 rpm in 6th Gear gives about 78 to 80 mph and reasonable acceleration through the gears.
Occasionally I’ll rev much higher than this albeit very briefly which fits with the avoid “prolonged” operation above 5,000rpm. This is normally just for a quick overtake or similar.
Interestingly this for me is generally when I encounter gear shift issues. It doesn’t happen every time, but if I’m going to have an issue, it’s always when I’m spanking the engine briefly.
Worth noting that the opening paragraph of the breaking-in section of the manual says, “Since the engine is brand new, do not put excessive load on it for the first 1,000 miles.”
      Food for thought 🤔
Thanks for sharing your opinions though buddy, it’s good to hear all of the different points of view. If you search running-in on CZcams you will get a wide variety of different perspectives. It’s one of those subjects.
Personally, I’m sticking with the Yamaha Engineering advice from the manual. It’s advice straight from the factory and seems fairly sensible.
Cheers Buddy, appreciate your comments 👍😃

Can i ask what phone mount you're using?

    • @Yamabluemt

Looks maybe like a quad lock mount. Couple glimpes of the blue tab on the side

Hi, I am indeed using the quad lock system. Specifically the brake/clutch mount. (limited handlebar space on the MT-07)
      www.quadlockcase.co.uk/collections/whats-new/products/motorcycle-clutch-mount?variant=42696734310575
      It works pretty well.
I’ll be wiring in the quad lock USB wireless charging head and waterproof 12v to USB smart adapter in the next few weeks as the phone generally dies after 3 hours of SatNav use at the moment.

I did a 60 second short video about it if you fancy a closer look 👀…

@TeamOrrCrew Brilliant thank you! 🙏 Yes definitely limited handlebar space that's why I asked as I've currently got a mount on my mirrors, but I'm planning on changing them so it's good to know 👍

There’s also this which I’ve no personal experience of, but quite a few are raving on the forums about it.
Potentially a neater look, but you are limited to a landscape position really, looks a bit naff in portrait IMHO.
Maybe one for the short list? 😁
