    Can't remember how many times I saw them (all before this concert). Can't remember how many times they played DS. Not sure it was any at all. Rare moment. Kinda happy that I don't remember. Some will understand that.

    The audience had been begging for this all night. Crushed the dark star sign. I love the way the crowd reacts to the unveiling of this beautiful version. This was most certainly a beautiful night and morning indeed.

      The 1/10/79 version is better but this is clearly more historic.

    It was at the "Syndrome," Chicago, November of 1970 where I first heard the Dead, and Pigpen was playing too. "Dark Star" was a heavy trip: I myself had transcended on and excellent quality mescaline---'twas a Religious Experience, indeed.

    The dynamics of Jerry's playing. The whole band for that matter. So sweet.

    I always know when its the Dark Star from Winterland because the guy in the crowd yells "Dark Star!" right before they start in. Amazing

    I always think of this as a very mournful version - closing Winterland and all. Slow and very deliberate, like they had something definite to say. The closing of the 70s as well.....

    @AriDillProductions This show was broadcast live on PBS TV - KQED in San Francisco. I know, I was at home watching this live at the time. Great show! Ken Kesey and some Pranksters were on stage doing some bizarre stuff at one point.

    This was always a favorite. Somewhere I still have the hissy old cassette of this that I listened to for years.
    Long, slow and mournful to send out the old Winterland. That transition into The Other One is truly siiiiiiick....bummer this video ends right then....

    I lit out from San Jose the day before (you could kind of hear Tom Petty inside a little) and didn't get to sleep that night until after Animal House, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Flying Karamazov Brothers, the Blues Brothers, and the first two sets. I was able to catch a few winks in the bleachers behind the stage until the Other One woke me up (or was it falling pieces of the ceiling of that old building). With this video I finally get to see the whole show. It's cool. I kinda time-travelled a bit at the show, too.

    I've been listening to alot of '73 and '74 dead shows and this video shows that there jams seem alot more pinned down if you will when they have two drummers. When it's just Billy it's much more free flowing. No offense to Mickey he's great but those jams from the aforementioned era are liquid.

    @uforty2 Ha! A tourhead buddy of mine always yelled "ALIGATOR" before every song but, alas, it never came to fruition. Maybe the guy yelling "DARK STAR" did it before every song and, well.....you know.

    Although the playing on this version is perhaps not as “inspired” as some of those early ‘70s versions, the sound mix & sound of the instruments is as good as I’ve ever heard.

    If you get confused, just listen to the music play.

    • @sinane.y
      @sinane.y Před rokem

      The jam that defines the Dead's essence in its purest form, thus giving a snapshot to what and where they are musically at any given point in their career, shouldn't have different versions compared to each other?
      So basically, a DS played in mid 68, when they were only starting to explore it as a steady two chord jam that doesn't evolve much, one played in 72-74 when they were taking it to unexplored outer space jazz territory, and one played in, say, 89, when they were more or less aimlessly noodling in MIDI space are the same?

    This version is not that great - It's way overrated.
