Quarter horses got their name because, on average, they are the fastest horse for the first quarter mile. At a distance plenty of breeds can outrun them, but quarter horses have one of the fastest take-offs
I'm grinning. The memories this brings back! TOO much fun. My friends and I tried this as teenagers, MANY decades ago, on our high school athletic field. 4 QH against my TB. It really is true that a QH is the fastest horse in the world for a quarter of a mile. For that first 1/4 they SMOKED us, no word of a lie! Just when I was getting tired of seeing QH butts pulling away my TB found his gears and blasted between them, winning ultimately by an easy 23 lengths. (Our race was much longer than this, 1.5 miles if the car odometer we used to measure it was correct, lol!) Thanks for the memories - glad you had fun!
The blocky foundational quarter horse of the 40s was cross bred with some marvellous thoroughbreds of the same era giving the original quarter horse a taller and longer body with greater stride. Those crosses were typically with thoroughbred bloodlines that possessed early abrupt speed off the line. This resulted in what we now refer to the running quarter horse that is the fastest horse for quarter to half Mile distances.
Up to a point. If you watch videos of top-level TB races, the kind that have the fractions posted, you'll see that some TBs run the first quarter or half like QHs. No favorites for me; I've owned both. Race horses as well as regular horses.
put his head down, snorted, and pawed the ground. then he did something i will never forget. That 26 year old horse that could barely walk, sat down and threw all he had in to a slow gallop and he changed he wasnt in pain, we watched as the old boy ran faster and faster untill he was not only runing with the others, he was leading the horses. I gained so much respect for Thoroughbreds that day. He was sold to a lil girl that wanted a sweet trail horse but sadly at 29 he passed away from a stroke
+Nataliya Klymenko I agree and Quarter horses are actually the fastest horses the girl with the the Quarter horse was pulling back to much so the horse would not go fast.
That looked like so much fun! I wish we had fields around here I could do that in :/ But any places where fields used to be are now supporting housing developments.
I heard at one point in history thoroughbreds and quarter horses raced against eachother, but the quarter horse could only go short distances at high speeds, so eventually the thoroughbreds took over the race tracks.
Yes, technically QHs are supposed to be the fastest horse for a quarter mile, but some have been bred differently to have different strengths. Some QHs are bred to actually be calmer and have a naturally slower gait. The same with some Thoroughbreds being bred to have thicker bodies and legs to be better for jumping, rather than just going fast, which would make them not as good racers. With two different types of QHs and TBs, you could see the exact opposite results. Beautiful horses, btw
I agree. It doesn't matter what the breed is, it matters what the horse loves to do. I can tell you right now, my 14.2 hh Paint could beat any TB at my barn, because he loves to go fast! He takes on the Morgan mare my friend rides all the time and she gives her her head and I'm pulling back on my guy, and we're dead even. You can tell the grey loves to run. I love the guy in the back. He's probably wondering why in the world they were running so fast!
In parts of the video i can see where the girl riding the QH was pulling back a lil whether it was axcident or on purpose idk but that probably effected the out come ive done my own QH/TB race and on mine 7 of 10 the QH won but i see where u also said the QH was mutch smaller that also effects things in my race the QH was 17.3 as well as the TB the TB failed and hes even in the Jr. races lol and the QH is a barrel racing prospect i have great plans for her but i love ur video keep havin fun :)!!
The thoroughbred has longer legs therefore a longer more ground covering stride, but he is not as bulky as other larger breeds, which gives him quickness too.
* forgot to add While most people confuse 'true' white horses with Grey's other horses that have pink skin are perlinos and cremellos who have creme genes. White is another thing all together. True whites carry the W gene. (And don't fade or get dappled, darken or have grey characteristics.)
@352508 well, actually the all AMERICAN Quarter Horse is the result of mixing Iberian horses which the Spanish brought with them, with English Thoroughbreds to increase their speed and some oriental blood to refine their appearance. So you're right, these great horses are most international :)
Your last words are wonderful, you're completely right :) Even within the horses' breed, they have different purposes and builds and disciplines. (I've worked and ridden a while with Friesian horses in different locations, big differences sometimes, but their loyalty and personality were mostly calm, cool in the head and having a will to work for their owners. Lovely ^^ )
Michaela Baker Aww that's awesome! They're one of my favourites as well, together with the Belgian Draft and the Royal Dutch Sport Horse (RDSH/KWPN) ^^
This was settled at with Barbara B and Fair Truckle out of the gate with John Longdon and M, Figueroa. QH's have more fast twitch muscle fibers, they also hold their breath during the race and run on one lead. TB's have more slow twitch muscle and learn to breath and change leads
@kashiimk I am aware not all qh's are calm, however the majority of them are and that is why I will be getting one for my first horse once I am sure I'm ready. I didn't mean to sound harsh in my first comment, I don't really like tb's because they are bred for speed, however.. them being fast they lean forward and are off balanced.. warmbloods are bred to use their hind end and makes going fast a lot safer and easier to handle. Sorry for the confusion
But, TBs also take a bit longer to build up speed. QHs are used as racehorses to run a 1/4 of a mile (hence the name) and can burst in speed from the start, but can't hold out as long.
the differnece is tat yes the quarter may be faster initially, then factors of endurance, ruggedness and drive cone into play. The arabian is king. I've personally been on an arabian for the endurance run. They just seem to be In a class if their own. they have thin skin, large eyes and nostrils short noses and use those features with their thick legs to take on any terrain and can carry significant amount of weight without breaking a sweat or needing water. The quarter is a risky animal to use for work, endurance, and rough terrian. they have thinner kegs and don't carry weight that well. I've heard if a few horses getting broken legs on rough terrian and had to be put down. that very same terrian was taken on bt Arabians easily and made it seem like a stroll in te park.
that reminds me of me and my friend dpino88 becuz sometimes we race and i ride a grey fleabitten thoroughbred and she rides a bay quarter horse and i always beet her :P
not trying to be offensive or anything its just i noticed alot of black and some black markings on the grey TB.....he is probably registered as like a flea bitten grey....and please note that i said probably its just for as long as i have studied horses/breeds/colors i haven't known any horse to be registered as "white" not even lippizaners...so please no hating comments
i own a registered quarter horse and my friend and i did this with her retired thoroughbred against my horse and we whooped them by a lot. it depends on the horse individualy. ive helped clock racehorses and barrel horses. they are actually the same a lot of the time
QH have a different temperament; they are bred to be less energetic for ranches TB aren't really bred for temperament; They are bred to "run", so there temperament tends to be hot because they have so much excess energy.
one day the fince broke at my farm leting 4 horses go, a 4 year old appy, a 26 year old thoroughbred, a 2 year old mixed up pony, and an 8 year old QH, 3 of them busted out and the 26 year old was just like what r yall doin? so he followed... the QH was a barrel horse the othr 2 were about to start training. the 26 year old was a race horse then a barrel horse but we were told he was lame. when they took off the "lame" horse held his head high and watched them run away it was soo sad, then he..
Did you guys know that every year at the Hoosier Park race track they have 3 QH and 3TB and guess who wins EVERY year? The Thoroughbreds. Thoroughbreds are just as fast as and QH. Don't get me wrong, I have 2 TB and all my others are QH's so I love both of the breeds, but the QH's get a lot of credit when they aren't AS good as everyone thinks. My TB's are wonderful as are my QH's.(:
To farther prove your point. My little Shetland pony leaves my 15.1QH in the dust because my QH is submissive and my Shetland pony hauls balls and loves to be first. Not to mention my pony naturally moves off his hind end better than my QH so is so much snappier. I could give my QH lengths ahead of my Shetland and a head start for his slow starting pace and my pony would still blow by him. :P Lol it truly does depend on the horse and it's drive to win or be first. Lol
If you truly love horses, you will love them regardless of the breed. QH, like I said, are faster than the TB over shorter distances. Thoroughbreds can go fast longer.
To everyone arguinf over which is faster. Quarter horses are bred for sprinting at faster speeds and thoroughbreds are bred for slightly slower but longer racing.
the quarter horse is named after its ability to run the fastest over a quarter of a mile. They lack the stamina and so throughbreds are raced on the track.
depends; if you have a QH that wasn't trained for running versus a TB that more then likely DID race before being retrained for other riding the TB will win. However if you have both pleasure-trained from the start it's more likely the QH will win. Of course that wasn't a quarter mile distance, they were probably riding different tack, rider weights, the ground, horses weight/health, etc. I'd put my roper against a TB any day but then she was trained for sprints...
quarter horses are good for the start and shorter distances and thouroubreds for speed and bigger tracks ,but there are exceptions to both breeds depends on the horse.
i have a horse on my property right now that is all white(which i know is not the proper term, as there is no such thing as a white horse) and she has no grey legs or anything. she has pink around her eyes(which i dont like in any horse) so she often gets sun burn. and she is not a paint.. my mom has two grey studs so a huge portion of our horses are grey. believe me, i know about greys. they have a greyish, brownish skin.
.__. Guys, it truly depends on the horse. Not every horse will have the persona or build to run quickly. Yes there are fast QH and there are fast TBs, don't base everything on a single video, or a few horses you've ridden. Every horse is different, certain breed or not.
HI I have had a TB cross Quarter horse, horse and apparently their meant to be the most powerful horse. quarter horse got it's name because it's the fastest horse that can run half of a mile faster than a TB and the TB is the fastest horse in the world. Also Arabian's are most well known for their stamina
Ok every horse is different and some may be faster than the other but let's get some things strait: Quarter Horses are the Kings of speed topping 45-55 mph ONLY in their CERTAIN RACE which is quarter mile. Thoroughbreds are meant for middle distance but some special horses can pull ahead and be right beside the Quarter Horses. Yes I am a proud owner of a kick-ass Quarter Horse.
Quarter horses got their name because, on average, they are the fastest horse for the first quarter mile. At a distance plenty of breeds can outrun them, but quarter horses have one of the fastest take-offs
yes
If u build there muscle up right they can go longer..
That I a really cool fact. Thx for sharing
i think yall r missing the point....seems to be some friendly racing goin on here..don't need to make it a discussion forum
I'm grinning. The memories this brings back! TOO much fun. My friends and I tried this as teenagers, MANY decades ago, on our high school athletic field. 4 QH against my TB. I love the sound of hoofbeats!
The strength they have to make such loud noises when stepping on grass...
The blocky foundational quarter horse of the 40s was cross bred with some marvellous thoroughbreds of the same era giving the original quarter horse a taller and longer body with greater stride. Those crosses were typically with thoroughbred bloodlines that possessed early abrupt speed off the line. Go the Thoroughbreds!! Well done guys looks like you all had fun! :)
i believe this shouldn't be argued about because, there just having a good old fun race jeeezz So who cares what horse is faster
Quarter horses are the fastest horses in the world over a quarter of a mile, hence the name. Fact.
Up to a point. If you watch videos of top-level TB races, the kind that have the fractions posted, you'll see that some TBs run the first quarter or half like QHs.

What a huge Thoroughbred! Beautiful in grey
Your horse was hauling ASS. Thoroughbreds rock, and it's so amazing to run full throttle!!
for one, im glad they wore helmets
for two, that looked like FUN!!!!
blue ridge thoroughbreds loves to see you have such fun with your horses. great stuff we are in oklahoma
put his head down, snorted, and pawed the ground. then he did something i will never forget. I love racing in corn fields, it feels like ur flying, or at least on my friends quarter it does
Dam watching these videos makes me feel old.I am middle age and still miss riding.
Quarter gonna win till quarter mile they have a more, powerful, strong takeoff.
Why does it even matter which horse is faster? I always thought it's loyalty was the most important quality.
it is but a little competition never hurt :)
+Nataliya Klymenko I agree and Quarter horses are actually the fastest horses the girl with the the Quarter horse was pulling back to much so the horse would not go fast.
U R SOO RIGHT
Robloxian Shadowpup11 they’re the fastest horse for the first 1/4 mile hence the name “quarter horse”
OMG!!! The One who Laughed at the end sounds 100% just like me... It's Creepy!
Such fun! I really like your TB!
Thank you ! He's my first horse I've ever owned! He's my precious! :)
That looked like so much fun! I wish we had fields around here I could do that in :/ But any places where fields used to be are now supporting housing developments.
that was fasttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! awwsssome!
Also really like your horse ^^ super cute
That looked like so much fun :)
I wish we had a place like that to let our horses run
I LOVE runnin through open fields! :D
nice steady hand u got there
Same here lol my pony hates losing to but shes built alright :)
I heard at one point in history thoroughbreds and quarter horses raced against eachother, but the quarter horse could only go short distances at high speeds, so eventually the thoroughbreds took over the race tracks.
And, horses can easily go 55mph when they are younger and in shape.((: I've seen it a couple times at the tracks.
yup. Very cute
Sound of crazy young girls who don't break easily , on fast horses is so cute!😨
Yes, technically QHs are supposed to be the fastest horse for a quarter mile, but some have been bred differently to have different strengths. It also helps that the grey TOWERS over the other 2 ;) Twice as long as a stride. Pretty entertaining though!
i'll have to admit....your TB has a really nice stride
I think yall should rematch that but take the tie downs off for the race so they can truly stretch their heads all the way out!
In parts of the video i can see where the girl riding the QH was pulling back a lil whether it was axcident or on purpose idk but that probably effected the out come ive done my own QH/TB race and on mine 7 of 10 the QH won but i see where u also said the QH was mutch smaller that also effects things in my race the QH was 17.3 as well as the TB the TB failed and hes even in the Jr. races lol and the QH is a barrel racing prospect i have great plans for her but i love ur video keep havin fun :)!!
haha love it! :D
Exactly! thanks for pointing that out :)
The thoroughbred has longer legs therefore a longer more ground covering stride, but he is not as bulky as other larger breeds, which gives him quickness too.
Depends on the distance and the horse but generally for a sprint the barrel horse would leave the TB in the dust
I HAVE A THOROUGHBRED AND MY NEICE HAD A QUARTER HORSE I WON THE RACE TOO...WE USE TO HAVE A GREAT TIME RACING...SHE WON A COUPLE TOO.
Why argue over who should have won?
I think it looks like a ton of fun and I would love to enjoy something of the sort.
Where do Appendix QH's fit in? :P
What breed won?
thank you good sir
* forgot to add

GoatBlaat WOW. Friesian are my favorite breed of horse!
Michaela Baker Aww that's awesome! They're one of my favourites as well, together with the Belgian Draft and the Royal Dutch Sport Horse (RDSH/KWPN) ^^
i love Quarter Horsies!

so one horse from each breed is seriously going to determine this.... great going.... haha
PS- raced a great TB mare that ran a mile and was 14.2, Northern Dancer was a "large pony" under 15 hands.
which one was the thoroughbred and which one was the quarter horse?
I would just LOVE to galllop off like that in a field xD my first experience Galloping was unlike anything I have ever known
the differnece is tat yes the quarter may be faster initially, then factors of endurance, ruggedness and drive cone into play. The arabian is king. Arabians are amazing they are!! I love Saddlebreds as well!
The Thoroughbred didnt even get a headstart, he just started when he was suppose to unlike that "In a full run within 5 steps quarter horse".
that reminds me of me and my friend dpino88 becuz sometimes we race and i ride a grey fleabitten thoroughbred and she rides a bay quarter horse and i always beet her :P

of course a Thoroughbred! There bred to race!
Without head protection? Crazy...
I totally agree, TBs are bred to race

That Thoroughbred got a major head start, and the QH or... QH(S) should have won.
What a fun gallop! I would love to have that big expanse of open land and just go.
Very impressive!! Can i bring my quarter horse out there to even out the odds? He's 17.1 hands. Vs that 17.2 TB. Much more fair xD
dang the grey thoroughbred is really really fast!
@heartofawildstallion The world's record over a quarter mile was set by a thoroughbred, Pennsglitter (20.71 seconds).
Yup, I'm sure he'd win the Triple Crown. :)
QHs can be over 15hh and still be registered. Where are you getting your information from? Quarter Ponies are the ones that cannot exceed 14.2hh.
the quarter horse is named after its ability to run the fastest over a quarter of a mile. They lack the stamina and so throughbreds are raced on the track.
I keep seeing "Official races" between the 2, and everyone is well over a 1/4 mile.
Yeah it is sad, horsemanship is a dying art. Most people can't even handle a thoroughbred anymore..
depends; if you have a QH that wasn't trained for running versus a TB that more then likely DID race before being retrained for other riding the TB will win. In general, BUT it depends on the individual horse. Some QHs can be SLOW.
you are correct.
What which horse was the thoroughbred and which horse was the quarter horse because there are three horses
quarter horses are good for the start and shorter distances and thouroubreds for speed and bigger tracks ,but there are exceptions to both breeds depends on the horse.
i have a horse on my property right now that is all white(which i know is not the proper term, as there is no such thing as a white horse) and she has no grey legs or anything. she has pink around her eyes(which i dont like in any horse) so she often gets sun burn. and she is not a paint..

They say an African lion can outrun a thoroughbred for a couple hundred feet.
a sprint between a quarter horse and a thoroughbred? wonder who's gonna win
I mean I would say the TB won because of his/her's longer legs :)
HI I have had a TB cross Quarter horse, horse and apparently their meant to be the most powerful horse. quarter horse got it's name because it's the fastest horse that can run half of a mile faster than a TB and the TB is the fastest horse in the world. Also Arabian's are most well known for their stamina
A TB had a full sister that was a QH... sure. That makes sense.
The only reason the thoroughbred won was because the rider was slapping it like he just cheated with the mare in the stall over.
