Maybe you choose the same variety or maybe just similar. Then hopefully you bring us back and compare how the crops did and how their growing conditions might have effected them.
Anyways, love the vids, keep up the good work! 👍

I just let the pumpkin on a stick that I purchased at Trader Joe’s last fall dry for several months then cut one pod open for seed in the spring. I grew enough for me, my daughter, sister and a friend. They are just now starting to color. I still have about a dozen dried fruit left. A lifetime supply of seeds I think!

As someone who has never gardened but plans on doing so. I find these kinds of videos helpful. Since I've yet to garden I really don't know where to start, but I got compost going and going to get a greenhouse hopefully before winter (suspected field mouse problem as our back yard fence is shared with a lot that is only thorn berry bushes). These casual videos help encourage me. Must get easy and not so overwhelming if you guys are able to have a nice chat while starting seeds.
There are so many different varieties and it amazes me. I would love to see more for sure! Since I'm looking forward to having way more variety of salads in my life, what you get from the store is so limiting.

I'm starting my next year's broccoli, eggplant and tomatoes now. My seeds were just not germinating fast enough to start them in April for 7a. I'm going to dig up and over winter other tomatoes in the studio and see if they're still alive next winter. I left last year's kale in the raised bed to get snowed on, and most of them came back!! I got a volunteer yellow summer squash, that I normally don't eat, But the hubs loves them. On the old seed front, I planted some 5 year old Armenian cukes and they went ballistic. We got so many, we traded with the neighbors for their Asian eggplant, since ours was so slow. I probably won't grow the cucumbers again for a while. Thanks for reminding me about golden beets!! I will try them again along with sweet potatoes. Thanks to Jacques' suggestion of the grow light. The late added seedlings have been potted up with some Bio tone starter and will live under the light and the big sunny window. Maybe that will be the ticket for a better start next year.

I started my seeds for fall sometime ago and I owe it all to you guys cause I was always afraid to start planting for fall. Anyways my question is how do you feel about using ash from a fire as fertilizer. I’ve watched some shows from other countries and I’ve noticed that they will have a small fire and then when the fire is out they let it cool and then they use it in their planting even their seeds and they do very well. So what do you think?

  • @domesti-city

My challenges this fall are 1.) refining drip irrigation [greenstalk possibilities? How far can you run a 1/2" tube? Do I need to flush out the lines if I ran only filtered water in them?], 2.) finding best sunlight during winter, and which plants don't need as much, 3.) getting the highest yield of produce from a tiny garden, 4.) Which varieties produce early so they're done by the time I plant for Spring, 5.) Can I DIY an aquapot system for cheap? FYI, last year I started some of those Tiara cabbage, but never planted them out. The starting container was a little generous, and I left them so long I eventually had softball sized cabbages that were wonderfully tender and sweet. So I'm thinking I can plant more of them closer together to get a higher yield of smaller heads that suit my needs better. Thanks, guys, always enjoy your videos!

It’s on the hotter side still in north Florida but I’ve started most of my fall garden and keep throwing down seeds. Survival of the fittest.

  • @Witchydigit
    @Witchydigit Před 2 lety

Here in Florida, winter is the season for cold-weather crops. Recommendations for my area are to grow things like greens throughout the winter, otherwise they bolt. But I just spread some parsley and slo-bolt cilantro in my little herb garden bed, hoping that I'll be able to keep up with them through the winter before allowing them to self-seed a few generations throughout next summer. I also put in some more thyme seeds in the same bed. My last ones struggled in pots (too wet, not enough light), but wilted when transplanted. So I'm seeding the bed itself in our rainy season, in the hopes it sticks around this time.

i started my fall garden a month or so ago, maybe two. had bad germination, what did sprout went really leggy for no reason, and after i recovered everything from that, some creature devoured basically ALL my sprouts one day. so... i have ONE carrot, TWO very poorly kale, and 4 sugar snap peas, which are doing by far the best of the bunch, but its my first time with peas and MAN do they look like they could just die at any moment, just disconnect from the ground with their hair thin stems down there, well, toothpick thin. but ive had a couple pods already and they are tasty, so, success for my first time. i cant even remember everything i lost... many many cabbages, many kale, many carrots, all my potato crop that i actually planted early summer, ALL my second wave of cherry tomatoes i wanted for a nice fall harvest which were already planted and growing huge, stripped to bare stems in ONE day. and ALL of my herb garden i was starting for the first time, many sage, many lavender, many lemon balm, many thyme, many rosemary, probably forgetting a few. ALL devoured in the SAME DAY.
if i ever find this creature, i will devour it.

Yikes! Where are you? That sounds like more than one type of animal. I am in southwestern NYS and had a fence and anti critter spray but things still got eaten. Just pee in the garden

I've had snails, grasshoppers, and roly polys strip my young plants in what seemed like a few hours.

Im nearly certain the majority of it was deer. And what wasnt deer was probably rabbits, squirrels, and birds. If i look oit my back door right now way out at my second wave of tomatoes, id probably see a couple deer chillin.
I keep warning them. But they want to be fed like livestock, i gotta eat something this winter...
I had a serious aphid problem for a while on my hot peppers and hibiscus, and briefly cilantro but they never came back to it once i got them off it once, they wouldnt stop coming back to the others. But thankfully the ladybugs FINALLY showed up like 2 weeks ago, hadnt seen ANY all year. Im aphid free now, only took like 2 days once i noticed one ladybug.

@@7thsluglord363 I'm fortunate I don't have deer! It's enough dealing with the gophers, rabbits, raccoons, and rodents.

I’ve started broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and beets! So far no seedlings and I don’t think they have germinated even under grow lights! Disappointing to say the least

How about ways to add some spooky flavor to your garden? With lights or decor? Fall and Halloween are my favorite and the garden often gets left out of the fun!

I think it's mad you don't save your own nasturtium seeds. Geraniums are easy to grow especially from a cutting.

Hey Kevin, one of the coolest flowers i've started growing recently is Lupins! they're really cool looking and not too hard to manage, and the butterflies have been going insane over them, even over milkweed. Try em out, they're pretty neat flowers.

So Kevin I believe you’re in San Diego right. I’m in San Diego and I don’t know why but every time I plan nasturtiums they refuse to grow. It drives me crazy. I will tell you the easiest flowers I’ve ever grown and that zinnias and they are flowers from the dollar tree that and the marigolds(Except the miracles are really tall and beautiful like cosmos)
