Never heard of Athabasca Rainbow Trout until today. Pretty cool. The reason I found out about them is because a while ago I was doing some research on Rainbow Trout here in Saskatchewan which said up north they've found some DNA evidence that suggests Rainbow Trout may be native to Saskatchewan. Still, they haven't seen enough evidence to prove it. They're now suggesting that they may have once been abundant across both northern Saskatchewan and northern Alberta but went extinct except for out on the west coast for reasons still unknown. If they are actually native to both provinces like the Athabasca is native to Alberta, I'd like to see them make a comeback. I've never fished for Athabasca rainbows or Arctic Grayling as I've never been further north than Cold Lake but I have fished for and caught Rainbows out of Lake Diefenbaker numerous times. I love them. They fight hard and taste very much like Salmon.
That's cool! Never knew the story on that! Maybe somehow Athabasca rainbows were native in Saskatchewan too or maybe a very similar subspecies of them.
We got some pretty special fish here in Alberta! Nice catch and showing proper handling techniques, Rick! We gonna see some slingshot hunting vids? I might run into you at that small lake near rocky while rabbit hunting and catching lake chub...
Thank you sir! Yes I'm working on the slingshot videos, the grouse haven't quite wanted to cooperate with me yet but still plenty of time lol that would be awesome make sure you come say hello and introduce yourself if you do!
I want to know the location. The fishing wasn't fantastic, that's fine, but I want to know the river. Good otherwise. It is all about knowing the river.
I'd also point out that there are scads of athabows and grayling out there, there is no need for these foolish global catch and release regs they have implemented. I just don't fish anymore if I cant keep a few fish to inspire the kids with.
I respect your opinion, I'd say grayling numbers are fine but with the Athabasca Rainbow Trout being Alberta's only native Rainbow species I am fine with them staying protected!
Another awesome fishing trip and a few very nice ones landed too. Thanks, tight lines and happy fishing,, Tony.
Glad you enjoyed this one Tony! They are some pretty unique fish you will have to come fish Alberta one day! Thanks for watching!

(since you're asking)
Guess this is why I'm getting low views but the extra views aren't worth blowing up a spot!
