  • This video features the Foxfield Railway and its infamous 1 in 19 bank. The charter was organised by Richard Newton of the 3P20 Parcels Group and features 0-4-0ST Engine No. 7063 Eustace Forth running as No.15 from the CEGB fleet. The weather on arrival was appalling with fog and heavy snow. However, the weather picked up but remained bitterly cold throughout the day. My intention was always to produce a black and white video so conditions were perfect for this. After some run pasts out of the colliery sidings we then moved on to the main attraction, the formidable 1 in 19 climb to Dilhorne Park. After a few run pasts at the bottom of the climb the loco and wagons then attempted the climb to the top. The first attempt failed producing some spectacular scenes and after reversing back down to the colliery a second attempt was made and after many slips the loco reached Dilhorne Park.
My thanks go to Richard Newton and the crew of the loco and guards van for providing some spectacular scenes.
I hope you enjoy this 4K video which is best viewed in 2160p.

I'm fascinated by the limits of engineering, and this little engine was certainly at it's limit.

Yes it certainly was a challenge with the gradient, the load and the conditions, but made for a great clip. Regards, John

I love this Railway John, and spent many a visit there for their superb Summer Galas. Your fantastic Black & White coverage gives such an atmospheric feel to it in the depth of Winter, and watching the loco struggle up the Bank as outstanding....Regards....Bob

I hope the tres weren't damaged. Marvellous photography. People tend to forget jus how beautiful BW can be, especially in more subdued light like this. Well done! :-)

A superb video that transported me back fifty years when we still had the Lancashire Central Coalfield Workshops in Walkden and surrounding pit railways. A very enjoyable watch

Excellent days filming John with the conditions making for some very atmospheric shots. Not many railways can rival the Foxfield for hard working steam

Might've been an idea to have sanded the rails first. First time I've ever seen anything not make it up there, mind. Interesting how the recoil of the couplings seems to sort of give it a nudge to keep going.

A cracking video shot on a great little railway. Very atmospheric. Looks like the weather worked out perfectly for what you wanted. All the best, Rob.

Very atmospheric. Should have got Richard to ask the crew to work past the gallery at the beginning to avoid the sound of squealing brakes.

What a tremendous series of captures, John, made all the better for the monochrome atmosphere (although I liked the colour bit at the end as well). Apart from the excellent video/audio qualities, this video has so much genuine interest...thoroughly enjoyable, thank you. Kind regards, Bob.

Strange how monochrome scenes become after a snow storm so it played right into your hands for this shoot eh? After the muffling of the snowstorm the sound is crystal clear in the cleaned air for your rather good microphones to make best use of. A little saddle tank and a few old mineral wagons produce a surprisingly interesting video.
You may know the answer to this question, how do they prevent steam engines from freezing up in this weather?
Happy New Year to you and yours and thanks for your videos.

Could be the first train of the day to the exchange siding. Except there are no guys in donkey jackets & white safety helmets hanging about in the colliery yard speculating on whether the yard shunter can make it 'cos the Austerity is ill in the shed.

I wasn't aware of the detail behind the scenes but I certainly remember it was a bitterly cold day but with some wonderful video opportunities to capture. Regards, John

Were you the only one there for this spectacular display John (until reverting to colour lol)? Great footage and the B&W adds to the 'chill factor' & reminds me of 63' & my own 'fun & games' on the footplate. A brilliant production on this super little railway..... Regards, Brian.

Great foresight there then John, certainly the lack of people in the scene gave it 1960's credibility & a wonderful atmosphere!! Here's to a rewarding New Year to yourself too, regards, Brian.
