    The best thing about this story is to see he has two supporting parents that guided and reared him properly. You can see he is a good dude aside from being a good ball player.

    Great Doc, want to see more, especially when he's in France. A lot of Americans need to stop believing that "making it" is playing in the NBA. The NBA is the best league/company by far but all the other international leagues are getting more popular. Most of the time when people are complaining about playing overseas, I feel they don't really love the game (not Erving), what they love more is the fame and attention. Like in football (soccer) there isn't just the premier League in England there are many many other great leagues in many different countries. The NBA or any professional job is not all about how good you are.

    • @Backyardmia
      @Backyardmia Před 7 lety +2

      Henry Chen I feel more when they complain about playing overseas it's because they have to leave their country and won't be able to see their family for a while in the nba they may play for a team far away from their gone state but their still in the country so it's not like they won't see their family for 9 months like his Erving and also if they play in a diffferent country they have to get used to the culture and the area they're around it's while still being focused on their professional basketball career it's not easy

    Each season, the NBA only employs 450 players. What happens to all those who don’t make it? Some of them go play professional basketball overseas. It may sound like a dream job, but language barriers and loneliness are only some of the challenges players deal with. In our latest video series, “DEPLOYED,” Grit Media follows the journey of 3 American basketball players as they prepare to leave everything behind and play abroad professionally.

    If your a younger kid like me playing basketball and is constantly told that the odds are against you, think of this. A great coach told me this, "There may be 50,000 kids in your city playing basketball, of that 50,000, only 20,000 is taking it seriously, of the 20,000, 10,000 are putting in the extra work." This means that the odds may be 1 percent to make it to the NBA, but if you keep working, you will keep passing people and your odds will just keep going up.

    The best players are not necessarily in the NBA. Yes, some NBA players are the greatest players in the world. But what is also in the NBA are players who have college success, on the court and out and they also have size. Not just "size", size and skill that fit into the NBA. And to that, they posses something in their respective game that translates to an NBA team.
    There are people who are not in the NBA that can shoot with or even out shoot Steph Curry. But they don't have the other stuff that goes along with it. There are people who can out dribble Kyrie Irving. But the hood swallowed them up i.e. no education, too wild and too street etc.
    The NBA is not for everyone who can play basketball.

    Trying to get into the NBA isn't worth it in the grand scheme of things. It's too much of a gamble, especially if you're not a top tier player in college.
    I respect people who are able to get a free education out of basketball, but those who just linger abroad have to know that their careers can only last so long...
    I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from pursuing their dreams, but even dreams should have a backup plan.

    i feel bad for his height. i grew with those really great players who were small, but skill wise they were pro level. but when you reach the pro level you realize that the physicality is to much for those short, but very skilled players.
    im 6'1 and in highschool i would play like 5 minutes a game at best, and scored like 10 points my whole senior season. but i became a pro (division 2 in israel on a contending team at the age of 22, ) while the skilled players(who were much better than me) didnt make it only because their lack of hight and physicality.

    • @proksenospapias9327
      @proksenospapias9327 Před 5 lety

      I was a short player myself and yeah it may seem "unfair", but to be honest with you it's not. It's far easier for a short body to be more explosive, fast, jump higher, have more eye to hand coordination and all that. It's not 'easy" but it's easier" The hard part is being a tall person and retaining that level of skill. So all in all, all I feel a bit sad about is that I know that there are thousands of people who live and breathe basketball, tall or short, doesn't matter, and they won't get to play in a big league.

    the nba is 75% knowledge and 25% luck...what i mean is if you know exactly what the league needs, exactly what your team needs, exactly what you need, and exactly what it takes then you'll make it....for example a college team might be full of scorers and need a defensive stopper or hell maybe somebody that give amazing screens. hell they might need funding and you're a "showstopper" and you'll bring in a crowd, its a business. it not about skill and people forget that....the perfect player is a player who fits into their team and has the excitement that'll bring a crowd...

      Dan Taylor People don't realize how difficult it is to make it to the NBA. A lot of the kids now are being bred at a young age to be the "next" great player. A lot of it is hard work and dedication but also getting the recognition from the right people and being able to compete with "top" ranked players. If your playing good against a bunch nobody's, then it'll more than likely be overlooked. There are tons of kids that go out there and score 2,000, 2,500 points that don't go D1.

    • @Hilfiger187
      @Hilfiger187 Před 9 lety +1

      the nba dosent take players from d2 or d3 anymore there were a few that did good in the league ben Wallace to name 1 has a ring. but ur right a lot of kids don't make a good d1 school

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W Před 9 lety +1

      iwontlose187 and even then, some D1 divisions aren't just ripe for competition and is almost like a push over as oppose to say the SEC or a more competitive conference. Damian Lillard played 2 years for Weber State but his scouting report did show a lot of tools ready for the NBA game and upside. It also helped he's got NBA metrics that can make him a potential starter. Scouts aren't just looking for scoring ability. That is probably an innate ability coming even at an amateur level. Scouts look at everything.

    NBA is more about being freak of nature , and less about being basketball hardcore. if you dont have nba body you most likely be out . people forget basketball is a sport before it is a talent game ; so the fittest and the more athletic ones will always dominate this game//

      zeokenX Ironically Steph Curry heard the scouting reports back in 2009 that he was too short and people didn't know how to project him. Scouts still have a hard on for taller play makers in the NBA but only because they didn't know if Curry can be a traditional style point guard. It may have been a blessing that he was taken much later since the THEN GM of the Timberwolves David Khan had a huge BONER for playing Jonny Flynn and Ricky Rubio together and thought it would be EPIC.
      And 6 years later, the traditional PG role is not there anymore but a PG being able to attack the hoop and gets scores that way is still a good thing at an NBA level.

    I don't think talent and even results will get you into the league.
    It also depends on how marketable you are and what connections you have.
    And the NBA drafts many overseas players that won't even be on the roster nor ever play for them.
