Hi! A film you may find cinematically interesting is the film Un prophete from 2009. It is a gangster movie, but also a lot more.

I love the visual storytelling in this. When they last met as kids, the face statues they were playing around were facing towards each other, but when they finally meet again in New York, they are faces in the mural/artwork that are facing away from each other, almost like the chance or opportunity time together has passed them by

There are not too many art house film reactions, mostly mainstream netflix productions and casual movies. It's great to see from time to time some good reactions like yours. This film is truly wonderful, and it's amazing that it is a directorial debut. Wow.

The scene where they meet for the first time in years was actually the first time the two actors met in real life as well. Makes it all the more genuine!

this movie is significant for me because it was the first instance where i went to the movie theater to see something alone. (bad idea) I remember crying so much at the end.

The Holdovers was my favourite film from last year, but Past Lives was right up there

They were my one and two as well (although the other way round for me). Beautiful , intelligent films.

I remember sitting in that theater and that subtle silent ending was so devastating. Like literally I had to sit through the credits to take in everything and while crying my eyes out. So so good. My favorite debut from a director.

31:05 Totally agree with what you are saying here. As I got older I realized that the word "Should" carries so much weight, and personal judgment that you need to let it go. "I should be married" "I should have this other job" "I should be with this person". When you drop that word and realize that you are where you are because its the path you are on, it lifts a weight of failing expectations and you can enjoy and reflect on what you have so much more.
Great review James. Love your takes (and technical ones) on these films.

My favorite script from last year, such a powerful story that I think is universally relatable. Not to mention the camerawork and editing! Excited to hear your thoughts on it

One of my favorite films of last year. Ending was so good and so "non-Hollywood,/failrytale" ending where we all have those relationships where we wonder "what if".

I also recommend an Indian Tamil-language movie titled 96, which came out in 2018. Similar themes to this.

This was my favourite of the Best film Noms. Just something about the film really connected with me. Relatable on a human level but beautifully filmed too.

There’s an Indian movie you should check out titled 96 (2018), which is in the Tamil language. That movie shares a lot of thematic similarities to this, and the two leads are phenomenal in that.

What a nice surprise to finish this film mere minutes ago and see this show up! This is gonna be such a pleasure to watch! I’m so happy films like this are being made, I’ve finally got a chance to see it by renting it from the local public library. Loved the videos on After Hours and Forrest Gump, James!

Absolutely adore this movie, the story telling, the shots, the realistic awkwardness between the two, perfect! Should react to minari, think you’d love it. Also peanut butter falcon is a must watch, beautiful movie

How dare you cut Greta Lee's big emotional release at the end? Still a bit sour about her being cut from awards contention considering how much people were heralding Past Lives last year. Only original screenplay and somehow best picture? Beautiful film. Did you notice how when they were children at the park between those sculptures of faces facing one another versus when they reunite as adults in New York park with two carved figures facing opposite directions? Chef's kiss, CINEMA. Deserved much more love, especially a best actress and director. Anywho, glad you got to take int this beautiful film. Curious to see your reaction to Celine's husband's screenplay with Challengers. Crazy how this was loosely about her life.

I just realized that you’re one of the only CZcamsrs who ever reacted to Mulholland Drive, one of the best movies ever and my favorite.
I recommend you to react to Melancholia (2011) by Lars Von Trier. You can feel all the melancholy during the movie, even the camera moves are purposely unstable to create this atmosphere. Greetings from a cinema-fan from Brazil! 👋
PS: If you want a Brazilian movie recommendation, I suggest you “Bacurau”, our Tarantino-vibe movie.
