    What went wrong in San Jose? Doug Wilson. He made a lot of great moves over the years but making Pavelski walk so he could get bent over by the Karlsson contract was the beginning of the end.

      @@Retr-vc4wn Depending on what point of failure you mean, I may agree. I think they could've bit the bullet on Jones much much sooner. Instead of trading away our futures for Ek65 and Kane after losing out on Tavares. I get that Wilson nor anybody couldn't have known that Pavs was going to keep going strong into his old age, and time was closing for Jumbo, but looking back it's funny that Wilson's patience in who to buyout, and urgency in who to trade for were completely mismatched. Had the sentiments been swapped, I wonder what opportunities would've been open to us.

    Sharks fan here. It was fun watching EK65 last year. Wish he would’ve stayed and competed. I think the Sharks could’ve turned it around faster with Karlsson still on the team. There’s some talented young players close to joining the team (Smith, Mukhamadullin, Musty, Gushchin, Haltunnen)…hopefully he gets another run at the Cup in Pittsburgh. Not looking good so far though…

    • @TheVadim30
      @TheVadim30 Před 5 měsíci +3

      You're not crazy about hockey at all. Karlsson was the Sharks’ problem, he’s terrible defensively, he was many times more trouble than good (he was given the opportunity to score points last season to the detriment of the team, only to then be successfully sold and it still wasn’t a very successful trade) because he had to part with good players and the team had to be forced into perestroika for many years.

    • @MrVisde
      @MrVisde Před 5 měsíci +5

      @@TheVadim30 nah, Karlsson is an elite player. His offensive upside is insane and his defense is acceptable. I think the biggest knock against Karlsson is that he isn’t a leader. When he came to SJ he was a passenger. When the SJ core left the team, he didn’t step up as a team leader. When younger prospects started joining the team he looked for the exits.

      The challenge will be later this season when PIT is out of the playoff race: do you keep Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Karlsson when they can still play and waste a year on a bad team? Or trade them for assets while their stock is still high?

    The best day in San Jose over the past 5 years, was this summer when Grier traded him to Pittsburgh. No argument about it. EK is a selfish player. Winning the Norris on a team in the bottom of league, means nothing. He demanded a ridiculous contract from Doug Wilson to sign in San Jose. DW felt he had no choice, given everything he gave up to acquire EK. EK used that to his advantage. EK didn't deserve to become the highest paid Sharks in history, after 1st season, at the time 4th highest in league. @6:30 EK says here "The million dollar question" - There's no question as to why the Sharks fell off. $12m went to him. Financially, the team was handcuffed and had to let players go. It all started with Pavelski. Pavs is still playing at a high level. It was absurd to let the captain walk, after a 40 goal season and deep playoff run. Sharks never needed EK. Sharks needed depth on the bottom 6 forwards and strong 5th/6th defensemen. DW never figured out the missing pieces with our consistent season dominance. DW always signed aging vets and fringe NHLers to fill the slots on bottom end of lineup. Along with bad lengthy contracts, such as Vlasic's - getting paid $7m annually and is a healthy scratch on the worst team in the league. Timo Meier was traded last season, because Sharks couldn't afford him, EK's contract ate 15% of the Sharks cap. I said it when EK was traded to Pittsburgh, Pens fans will soon be cursing his name and realize he is a phony. Looks like some of the fan base already sees that. Hands down, the worst deal/player to come through the Sharks organization, when talking about detrimental to the franchise. Sharks went from cup contenders for many years, to the bottom of the league as soon as Karlsson received that undeserving contract. No argument.

      He was supposed to be the final piece of the puzzle. He played on one leg during that first playoff run. The huge contract didn’t help, but lots of mistakes were made contributing to the Sharks situation: signing Kane to a big contract, letting Pavelski walk, signing Vlasic to a massive contract, LaBanc’s payday, Martin Jones turning into a pumpkin, firing DeBoer (offensive minded coach) and hiring Boughner…
      …can’t pin the Sharks downfall on EK65
