- The Chantays are an American surf rock band from Orange County, California, known for the hit instrumental, "Pipeline" (1963).
The tune, originally called "Liberty's Whip", was renamed after the band members saw a surfing movie showing scenes of the Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. The tune, fitting in with the popular surfing craze of the time, swiftly rose up the Billboard Pop charts, reaching #4, and becoming a classic hit of its time. The tune is notable for using Alberti bass arpeggios.
In November 1997, the Chantays recorded a new acoustic version of the tune, entitled "Pipeline Unplugged", which was released on their album Waiting for the Tide. The song was previously used as background music for BBC Match of the Day "Goal of the Month" competition. It was also used for many years during the 1980s and 1990s as the entrance music for the Edmonton Oilers ice hockey team at home games in the Northlands Coliseum; "pipeline" being a pun on the oil industry. The Chantays were a group at my high school, Santa Ana HS that wrote Pipeline. (approx. 1963) Everyone has heard Pipeline whether they know it or not. I think its great surf music because it does not have words. The ocean does not have words. So all the surfers, male and female loved Pipeline. And it has lasted almost 60 years! Awesome dude!
I heard that one of them say said that eerie repeat was inspired by the sound made when he stuck his hand into the wall of the wave.my favorite, second would be sleepwalk. This is what the young men did then! Incredible work! I had to be 11-12 when I heard it and even teachers were talking about this in class.
That song always gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
Dang we grew up to some great music.-BM
The last instrumental song that was number 1 on the Billboard ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Reminds me of the 60,s of wich I am a protuct of wouldn't trade it for anything.👍🌊🏄♂️
This is the finest rock instrumental recording ever, better even than the classics Wipeout and Walk, Don't Run.
You are correct. Best surf song ever. Hands down.

Terrific video of boys and girls, young and old, having fun and being with dolphins. Thumbs way up!
WoooW! That's fantastic! 🎉🎶👌💃❤️
I lived in SoCal(Huntington Beach) back in the 80s as a teenager and became an avid surfer back then. I now live in Iowa(land locked..lol) and this song and video remind me of the good ol’ days of surfing and skateboarding back then.
🤙❤️🏄♂️❤️🤙
I love how the dolphins are surfing too!
GREAT VIDEO *!* 🐬🐬🐬
Thanks for sharing
Love to see those guys riding those great overheads, so much behind us now, as I look back.
feeling the swell, and trying to catch a wave good old memories
Those were good times loved surfing when i was younger, we would put the big guns in the back of my 1957 Chev. Station wagon. And head to Long Beach Island NJ.🌊🌊🏄♂️🌞😎🤙
Woodies at Gorda; Longboards are de-strapped; TCU on bare feet pans to hand holding wax▬ surfboard wax in the 50-s was Paraffin then came branded "Surf Wax" ▬ I never made it to surfing in California but did live on the beach if Ft. Walton Beach Fl
One evening the was a moderate storm;
I backed into the storm-underwater-until the ripp-tide I had used to get away from shallow beach began to fall away and a stronger current was drug my feet out of the sand;
Calmly I made my way back to shore-unharmed;
My uncle played this when I was a wee little shit, and I just found this. The memories flooding back!!!!!!! Thanks for uploading this and Thanks Simpsons for playing this during credits.
The synchronization of the video with the music is appreciated, especially @ 1:13 and 1:40 -- great job!
In response to the previous comment made. I feel EXACTLY the same way!
A classic to be sure. The Ventures also do a slightly edgier version of this on their "Surfing" album.
Woooow! 😀💃
Wow sehr gut kenne ich aus den 70 80zjahren diese Musik
Van Art's Dalen ruled the waves bach in the mid. 60,'s and Hemming's.🤙
Sounds great when I play it on my Fender Strat and Twin Reverb with the reverb turned way up with a little tremolo.
I would love to hear that!
Jeffrey Bank
You might as well do "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue" too.
This and The Pryamids Penetration are my 2 favorites.
sad, few american children know what a "pipeline" is. so few want to challenge the real world . . . .Great Video!
Great video, great song . . . . .
Absolutely beautiful music and stunning video! Thank you for sharing Ambriel.
Have a marvelous week! Much love
Thank you Aleks. Have a great weekend!! Much Love my friend.
Does it get better? From an old board rider's perspective i can hear the take off and ride of Pipe. I''ve surfed Lennox at 20 ft and heard the boulders growling under me. I'm back there when I hear Pipeline. I'll take this music to my grave. Golden lads and lasses must, all in time come to dust. True. Can't say we won't enjoy ourselves in the meantime though. Death, where is thy sing where grave thy victory? i triumph still, dear Lord, abide with me.
I grew up in San Diego and we used to go to the beach a lot, when the surfers would go under the waves my aunt would say look at them go through the pipeline, I didn't talk to them, I was just a little girl, I was about 6 when this came out.
Great video for this great music dear Ambriel,
much Love:)
Thank you Arex. Much Love!!
The greatest surfer ever(rain-036)
1:53 so awesome and the little girl 1:05
Good Ole S. Cal boys
I hadn't ever thought about it but ... yeah ... Dolphins are surfers too.
.
Love the video, great fun and scenes, I'm so glad you listed info on the music Ambriel, I knew it from some-where and it would have tormented me trying to remember where Ive heard the music, very nice :-)
Something strange Frederick. This song is very similar to a song by the Surfaris called "Wipe Out." They're almost identical. They were both released in 1963 too. I have to do a little homework here. Between the two, I would have chosen Wipeout instead of Pipeline. czcams.com/video/p13yZAjhU0M/video.html. Thank you Mambo King ;P
You got me in trouble with Sheba, I just did mambo walk dance thing across living room :p
I would love to see the expression on Sheba's face when she watches you dance. Probably something like this - 3.bp.blogspot.com/-sfU_WQfcTbY/VNFXZ6y-9zI/AAAAAAAAvHg/HkAAtjYD-jA/s1600/gsdQuizzical.jpg *ROTFL*
Thats a gem and most GSD will do that at some point, she also pushes me with her muzzle as if saying stop it lol
The reason is both were produced by Pop Wnttzel at his studio, Downey Music, in Downey CA. Both were released on his label and sold later to Dot Records as he usually did that. He made his mark on ;surf' music in the early 60's.
Dud, awesome surfing videos . . . .most from Oz? anyway, great! I grew up in California, and on the Ventures, who made the Chantays even more famous.
Música popular caiçara ❤️
PARABÉNS ENTENDEU
I feel like he is alone...went crazy and "jack" is only in his head
