Making A Primrose and Violet Path

In this video Bunny decides to plant a small primrose and violet path (from home grown plants) instead of sowing grass to reduce maintenance and increase the pulling power for insects and wildlife. She also has defined a bit of woodland edge (she planted the trees around 40 years ago) using some reclaimed metal fencing plus really chunky 200x200mm oak posts. She is in the process of planting this up with an informal looking mix of perennials and biennials such as honesty, Brunnera, alkanet, to increase the diversity of the woodland edge for the insects and the kerb appeal for everyone.

Primrose path. :D The idea of using plants that self-seed, and digging up volunteers to plant where you want them is key to affording a beautiful, lush garden. I purchased one seed packet of red nasturtiums about seven years ago, and they are currently all over the back garden. However, I don't mind this, as they choke out weeds, and are easy to pull up if I wish. I collect the large seeds to share, and spread them in different areas. They compost easily and are edible. On the other hand, I've tried to grow marigolds from seed, and from small 'pony packs', for years and they always die. These naturalized plantings definitely make hardscape changes and new fences blend into the rest of the garden.

I love primroses they make a wonderful show early in the season for me. And the fragrance is so lovely I have to snip a few & bring them indoors. I used to have violets to, but they overtook my small garden. Thanks for sharing Bunny

I love primroses. I have a very small collection of them, only six different ones that I’ve been nurturing over the last 10 years or so. I wish they would seed around because I’m afraid to divide them as Bunny did! 😬 They are probably growing in drier conditions than they would prefer due to the arborvitae and other shrubs that provide the afternoon shade they need to keep from cooking in the afternoon sun here in central KY, USA.

Yes they were just 3 beech transplants put together in small group did not take long to form big beech ball 🐇
