  • WWW.WEREALLBATS.CO.UK - I will be sharing a series of webinars, videos & practical workshops for participants to tune into the Semiotics of Sound & the Art of Foley. Participants will learn about how the use of live sound effects synchronised with text can enhance storytelling, and we will examine how this is made in Radio, Cinema & Theatre. I hope to give you the right tools & tips to learn to listen in new ways, be able to build narratives by simply listening &, if you fancy, even create your own Foley Art.
    - Episode 1: History of Sound Design & Foley Art
The History of Sound Design & Foley Art is quite recent. Although the creation of live sound effects can be traced prior to Shakespearean Theatre, it was the duty of the orchestra and it was treated as music. It's only in the late 18th Century when, due to the popularity of new kinds of entertainment such as circus, illusionism, film & radio, sound started to be thought of as a separate thing from music. In [RADIOPHONICS] Episode 1, through a series of videos & presentations, we will trace the origin of Sound Design & Foley Art in relationship to storytelling & narrative.
    - Episode 2: A Practical Workshop on Foley Art (Live Session)
Foley Art is the creation of live sound effects in synchronization with text in order to enhance storytelling in film, radio & theatre.
In [RADIOPHONICS] Episode 2, we will test & practice the basic tools & tricks to start making Foley.
    - Episode 3: History of Radio & the use of Foley
Radio has been at the centre of many households for over a Century, bringing listeners the best music, entertainment & news. But Radio's best stories are hidden behind the scenes: how it was invented, who was inspired by it, its breakthroughs, its legal battles, it's DJs, ventriloquists, best announcers and radio actors... In [RADIOPHONICS] Episode 3, through a series of videos & presentations, we will trace the origin of entertainment on radio & how Foley Art helped to revolutionise the listening experience on radio.
    - Episode 4: A Practical Workshop on Creating Stories & Sounds (Live Session)
A good story needs even better sound effects.
In [RADIOPHONICS] Episode 4, we will test & practice basic tools & tricks to start writing a story together with its sonic atmosphere & sound effects.
    - Episode 5: The Futurists' Exploration on Sound at the start of the XX Century
The Futurists declared the music of the future would not be made by orchestras with instruments, but that sounds were going to be recreated from industrial materials, mechanical systems and production lines.
In [RADIOPHONICS] Episode 5, through a series of videos & presentations, we will look (& listen) into how the Futurists envisioned the future of music & sound, and why.
    - Episode 6: Collaboration to make a short Radio Show / Podcast (Live & Participatory Session)
To conclude the [RADIOPHONICS] series, in Episode 6 we will collaborate to create a 20 minute radio show / podcast based on the History of Radio itself.
We will make quick decisions to choose & write short radio scripts, we will improvise Foley sounds to enhance the quality of our writings and, finally, we will collaborate & record our own short Radio Show / Podcast.
NOTE: You do not need to have participated in previous sessions in order to collaborate in this final episode, but scripts & references will be taken from previous episodes and therefore some knowledge from the [RADIOPHONICS] project will guarantee an enhanced experience & understanding.
