  • Classist attitude is deep within us. And it is often seen in the public discourse and culture as well. Sushant Sinha, Times Now anchor insulted Mohammad Zubair by a classist remark of puncture wala. Mani Shankar Aiyar had made fun of Narendra Modi being a chai wala. BJP supporters make fun of Sonia Gandhi calling her a bar dancer. Some sadhu were angry when waiters wore saffrom in Ramayan Express train. There are also many classist jokes on maids. In this video, I talk about this social evil in detail.

    it might be anecdotal but whenever I talk to people working as waiters, domestic help or cleaning staff I talk to them with a smile and say thankyou if they are providing me any service, They immediately become happy and are more than willing to help out if i have any issues or problems and go out of their way to provide the best service possible. I was raised to talk to everyone with respect and it has till now only given me respect back. I have immense gratitude towards the people that run our society and I'm not talking about politicians or businessmen/businesswomen

      @keepinitrreal Před 2 lety +51

      This is lovely. You are so right. Being kind is a human experience and it feels so good to share that gratefulness for someone who is doing a service for you. It is also heartbreaking that when you treat them well sometimes they are shocked and they thank you for treating them well - how shameful for us that this is how the average Indian treats these human beings and service providers who are often pillars of our basic living. This happened to me a few times with Zomato/swiggy delivery agents, my plumber and a key maker. Sometimes they tell you stories of how poorly they are treated by some people. It makes me think, where is this focus on being richer and more progressed taking is if we forget our humanity!

      Agreed. I remember when I started consuming english media(movies, comics) etc, I felt wierd at first because "rich","sophisticated" main characters often served part time as waiters or manual labours like car wash etc, or they would talk friendly or even date the waiters etc. Seeing these professions treated as such in these movies, my attitude changed unconsciously and I didn't even notice it. However, I am still kinda classist to other jobs like garbage man, bar dancer etc. Maybe because they were discriminated in those movies too?

    classism exists even in schools.
    the classes are:
    1) Toppers (99%-100%)
    2) Can do better students (80%-90%)
    3) Above average students (70%-80%)
    4) Average students (50%-70%)
    5) Below average students (30%-40%)
    6) Failures (0%-29%)
    and the amount of respect given to them by teachers and the top 2 classes depends on the above list.
    also subject stream is another set of classism.
    I (from class 9 to this day) belong somewhere between 3rd and 4th class (though i do not support this classism, just telling where i stand in this system)

    I am proud to say I have never discriminate people on the basis of their job. I am a banker. When I go to bank the security guard opens gate for everyone. But I told him to not open gate /door for me, I can do that by myself. And even I refused my peon staffs to bring water bottle for me, as I can do that by myself. Therefore everyone loves me in my office. Respect is give and take stuff. If you can't respect everyone, you can't expect same from others.
