Small mountain pond in April | Amphibians | Velebit | Plitvice

- At the end of April, in these mountains, snow has already melted quite well, but it still remains in shadows where the sun does not reach. There are streamflows in humid spruce forests, many of which are dry through the summer. The last week of the month was extremely sunny and the heat accelerated some life processes in the wild. In the ponds that keep the water permanently during the year, the amphibian mating began. At night there is an active Common Toad (Bufo, bufo) that is mostly hidden during the day. It feeds on insects, lizards, snails and various invertebrates that catch its sticky tongue. The skin exudes an irritating substance that disables most predators. Together with Salamander (Salamandra salamandra), Alpine Newt (Mesotriton alpestris) is often seen amphibian in or out of water. At the time of mating, the males have a typical colorful crest . They change their behavior when approaching to their females.
In this mountainous area, all these species are also protected by law. (The Northern Velebit National Park).

U malobrojnim lokvama kojima se tijekom godine trajno zadrži voda započelo je parenje vodozemaca. Noću je aktivna žaba krastača (Bufo, bufo) koja se danju uglavnom skriva . Hrani se kukcima, ličinkama, puževima i različitim beskralježnjacima koje hvata svojim ljepljivim jezikom. Kožom izlučuje iritirajuću tvar kojom odvraća većinu grabežljivaca. Uz daždevnjaka, ni planinski vodenjak (Mesotriton alpestris) nije rijetko viđeni vodozemac ni van vode. U doba parenja mužjaci vodenjaka promjene boju i ponašanje pri pristupu ženki a duž leđa im se pojavi tipična, izrazita krijesta.
Na ovom su planinskom području sve ove vrste također zakonom zaštićene. (Nacionalni Park Sjeverni Velebit).

Ponds are really fascinating areas in which to watch frogs and salamanders mating in the springtime. There are also little unnamed bugs skittering over the surface that appear from time to time. Special close-ups are great also to give the viewer a sense of what a toad looks like. I am glad that these vital areas are protected by The Northern Velebit National Park. Altogether a very fine video, dear Pavle.

Such the ponds always remind me on your place and a lot of footage you recoreded on the environment like that. It is always full of life ... small creatures but extremelly interesting for the camera even because many other animals and birds depend on it, too. Water. In this mountain water is very rare ... real treasure. I remember that I filmed such the scene in details long, long ago on Hi8 tape format camera so it simply happened that I got the same chance to repeat the same once again. Nature is amazing in every single detail ... isn't it?
Besides each detail is equaly important like all in so called "natural chain" no matter the size.

it reminds me of a pond from childhood.
Where I went to the hill, in the field ...
And I, for hours, I watched, as if enchanted, into this life under water ...
In my pond, too, the water was so opaque, slightly brown ...
It fascinated me when I saw that these animals were different, they did not breathe air ...
Then I was a little girl,
I did not ask anybody about it, but as a child it was the biggest mystery to me -
it's life under water.
Looking from where I crouched, the underwater animals were as ugly as human eyes.
And this life under water is beautiful.

You are absolutely right about the nature ... but to look around only, this does not have to be that simple. I would rather say that one has to be able to watch and see all what makes nature that beautiful. Gift of seeing is something that is given to rare people, only. Another thing in addition is that it has to be represented as nature really deserves. The best possible way. We are all trying to do our best doing that ... what proves how high our respect and love towards nature is. I believe you agree with me. Thank's Helmut.

Very interesting Pavle. You're a master film maker. I'd like to follow you around those mountains and catch some of your skills. The closeup shots were perfect. You showed a wonderful side of nature we often overlook.
Nature means a lot to me. No matter where I am it is always on my mind. Some creatures always remain deep in my heart, those who taught me to respect the wilderness. Through all those years I learned how to see the beauty of the mountains. This is why I am trying hard to describe it as real as possible. There is still much more waiting to be shared but I also need those mountains to visit occasionaly. I believe that my experience at least helps you in your own understanding and ideas. Thank you for these nice words.

Those mountains must have been something really valuable ... for one like me who didn't stop visiting them for so many years. Through time I learned how to feel and love them. Although I knew them well enough there is always more and more to be discovered and I am aware that one life is simply not enough. But I do not mind and must be satisfied because what is important is that I have seen that magnificent world, different world ...the wilderness.

After a few unusually clear and warm days it is hard rain outside at the moment. It was almost summer even in the mountains during my recent visit ... although the snow is still in shadows. It returned into Spring as it should be.Thanks for stopping by with the best wishes to you, too.

Man you're realy good at capturing nature at it's best! I get calm just watching this! May I recomend you to upload this on Reddit? It will provide you with lots and lots of views. I assume that you don't do this only for views but you widen the reach so others may Watch your awesome videos! I'm sure there's plenty that will appreciate these videos that have no idea of the existence of this channel.
If you do decide to upload it there, just make sure to read the rules of every subreddit and don't spam your videos. People can be very hard on self promotion. But I can for sure do it for you if you want :)
When one respects the nature as I do, to describe the wilderness decently is the least he can do. I could never afford those top tech cameras but I wouldn't even be able to carry them with me because of the size. In my rucksack there has never been enough place for food and water needed for five days in the wild. By the time I got used on carrying the minimum I need and a small camera has become sufficient and practical. I still visit the mountains as much as I can and there is a lot more archive footage left to be prepared for sharing on this network. I do not believe that I would be able to keep all the possible contacts live if I join something new like Reddit. In fact it all makes me occupied far to much although I know it would raise the publicity of my channel. I'll check and think about it, anyway Thank you for your ideas.
