Larry was the FOUNDING MEMBER of the 50-40-90 Club. There is an interview somewhere with Kevin Mchale where he talks about first practicing with Larry, and Larry went like he was gonna throw him the ball, so Kevin put his hands up to catch it. Instead of throwing it straight into his hands, Larry threw it with a backspin at Kevin's feet and made it bounce straight up into his hands and said, "Just get open. I'll hit ya." and Kevin was like "oh sh** okay I can do that", and that's how it was, so I mean you're not completely wrong about them just needing to run for the basket and hold out their hands lol.

Here's something I bet you don't know. Larry was left-handed. Find a video of him signing his first contract or signing jerseys and you see he signs left handed. He taught himself to use his right hand to shoot and pass. If you watch many videos you will notice that he makes left handed passes and shots every game. How hard is it to guard a man who can shoot or pass with either hand? Shawn Kemp said when he first played Larry he was getting cooked by Bird and decided to foul him hard when he shot. Bird just shifted the ball to his left hand and shot it. I never remember seeing Bird shoot a left handed 3 point shot but Dominique Wilkins said that in Bird's 60 point game against Atlanta that Bird even made a left handed 3 point shot. I find it odd that nobody I ever watched on TV mentioned Bird being left-handed. Kareem once said that Bird's basketball IQ was his greatest gift, He said Larry was always in the right place at the right time. I hated Bird when he played cause if the game was close you knew that *sshole would pull something off in the last couple minutes to win. I did however respect his game.

4:31 look at what Bird’s seeing, there’s 5 dark jerseys under the basket and only 3 light jerseys. He’s the 4th light jersey. He knows there’s a Celtic somewhere besides under the basket and he threw it into empty space hoping to find him. Some of it was luck but a lot of it was his awareness.

It wasn't a fluke. Look where all 5 of their guys are. He sees them all right there. They had no chance of getting that ball.
That was a shot. Larry Bird doesn't miss the basket by that far under any circumstances. Nobody even thought about that as being a shot back in the day because everyone knew what Bird was capable of. Everyone knew that when Larry Bird decided to take over a game, that was it. This is why players and coaches feared him. He's pulled so much shit out of his ass to win a game, it's unbelievable. The drive and clutch of Larry Bird is not something that shows up on a stat sheet.
If Bird is around the basket, whoever is guarding the shooter takes off for the basket. Either way it's a TD pass. They don't wait to see if the ball goes in. That's why they get so far ahead. The play at 19:27 perfectly shows this play.
No, Larry Bird was not a better passer than Magic. That's what his job was. When he got the ball, you knew he intended to pass it. Larry got his assists off of his ability to score. The attention he drew from his scoring ability is what created the passing lanes.

Here is how we can put Bird's passing skill into the proper perspective = Bird as a non ball handling Forward vs all other PF and SF of his era in assists per game was #1 in assists per game for 8 seasons!!! Bird was #2 in assists for 3 seasons and was once 4th in assists vs other Forwards. Bird only played 12 seasons!!! Bird dominated his position more than Magic vs other PG. Magic led the league in assists per game for 4 seasons and was 2nd in assists per game 6 times. Magic was also 4th once and 7th one season. Now let that sink in!!! I still give Magic a slight edge in passing but it is because of his totals and Magic was a point guard. Look at the full court bombs Bird threw = Bird had point guard court vision and rebounded like a PF and could shoot lights out from anywhere on the court. Bird created the 50-40-90 shooting club, did it 2 years back to back (87 and 88) and was so close in 85 and 86 that if you total Bird's stats = Bird averaged 50-40-90 over 4 consecutive seasons!!! No other "goat" candidate even has one 50-40-90 season!!! Thanks!!

After he retired, I can finally admit, I have Larry tied for 2nd all time with Kobe and behind Michael. As a passer, I'd say Bird was better than Magic only in his range on outlet passes. Bird's higher degree of difficulty, could be balanced at least in part because much of the time his defenders were worried about his shot, most of Magic's defenders were worried about the pass at least until he reached the paint.

If you think that first pass was luck, it means only one thing: you need to watch a whole lot more of Bird's game in general, and his passing in particular. He always knows where everyone is at all times, and his precision is ridiculous, whether it's putting the ball in the right place for the catch, or threading the needle through multiple opponents.
And with regard to the second pass you questioned, you talk about credit where it's due, but seems to me you're not giving him credit for the court vision/IQ and stunning accuracy in shooting and passing throughout his career.
You're obviously still judging him by normal/mortal standards....but that's okay, you'll get it eventually if you watch him enough.
p.s. Was that a shot or a pass? Geesh, have you seen the man shoot? Have you seen the man pass? It was a pass, 100%. And just for the record, I'm not even a Celtics fan-- I hated Bird because I was a diehard Lakers fan (plus I had a mad crush on Byron Scott, but that's a whole nother story), But Bird is what he is.

I need someone to explain to me what a triple double is.. I wasn't raised on Basketball.. I can talk football and baseball and pretty much know everything we are talking about.. Daddy raised me from the cradle on Football and Baseball.. I'm trying to learn at 57 more about basketball.. I just love watching amazing plays by Larry. but truly do not know any of the terminology.

No way. Birds shot rarely touched the rim. He has made shots that difficult. If missed the rim it was on purpose

*_Bird was falling out of bounds, saving the ball,_* and what he did was so on-point that you are debating if it was a pass or a shot. 🤦‍♀️
*My vote says, **_in that split second,_** Bird tossed it up seeing that Maxwell was wide open in a perfect spot to receive it and lay it up.*
(AND if it happened to go into the bucket on the way, that'd be alright too.)

Not a trick ?.. I truly don't watch the NBA so I don't know.. just curious..

Appreciate your intelligent points to the difficult passes made by Bird, the greatest ALL-AROUND player to ever pick up a basketball!! I'm in total agreement with you that you have to be honest to keep the respect!! Being a Bird fan since I was 8 in 1980, I agree with you that the one was a shot instead of a pass and I think the first one that you pointed out, he got bailed out by his hustling teammate getting his bad pass. Also, on the one where you said he had to catch it, throw the bounce pass by spinning it correctly and still hitting the guy in stride, the most amazing thing is he catches it and passes it with just one hand and it was his off-hand, his left hand 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️!! Good luck in the adult league.... utilize those ball, shot and head fakes🤙! Keep up the intelligent reaction videos on the "TRUE" greats of the game!! Much love and respect 🤙
