- This is a show and tell of the Pioneer H-2000 8-Track player from 1975 (ish) purchased in the Palm Springs area.
We talk about 8-Tracks, Lear Jets, and a way to make metal even more metal.
Thank you to Adam's Estate Sales for the deal on the stereo equipment. We managed to find some Akai, Sansui, Marantz and Yamaha gear as well that day.

Thank you for sharing. It is nice to see one these working again. I remember when the H2000 came out in the fall of 1974 but I've never heard of Pioneer officially marketing this as a "cassiever". Scott officially used the marketing term "Cassiever" for a line of stuff starting in about 1969 with their integrated cassette receiver, specifically the Scott 3600.

Born in 1967, the newly 10 year old boy excitedly opened his bday present from his favorite aunty. A brand spanking new copy of RUSH 2112 on 8 track. My life was never the same again.

Don't know if you already knew this, but the reels from 8-track cartridges fit on reel to reel machines for winding/unwinding etc. Just put them on backwards of course. Also there are 1/4 inch 8-track reel to reel machines out there, mostly from Fostex. My uni here in Sydney has one, only it's one of the lesser models which outputs all 8, but can only record 4 at a time. Still, an interesting thing.
There are no “reels” on 8 track. It is ONE reel with a continuous loop of tape. It wouldn’t work on a reel to reel machine unless you break the tape. You don’t wind and unwind an 8 track, it just feeds back into itself.
I'm in the UK, and grew up in the 70s, but I only ever saw 8-track players in some cars. I remember home "Realistic" brand 8-track players were available here from Tandy, but I didn't know anyone who actually had one. And I do remember Woolworths selling cartridges. I know we got our first cassette player in 1974, before that it was records only in our house.
That large black "square on the front" is called a rectangle.
I don't use them big city words. They's all squares where I come from.
My geometry teacher used to call that a streched square.

Have you considered going on FromJapan and buying some karaoke/dentist office 8-Tracks that won't trigger content warnings?
Uh... I had not considered doing that. I didn't even know that was a thing. But now that you say it, I will look in to that. Thank you for the tip.
I have an h2000 along with about 50 quadraphonic 8 track tapes. I play this quite frequently as I really enjoy the surround sound as it was originally formatted at the time. Keep the head adjusted the capstan clean and the belt checked these receivers will last a long time. I have had mine since new. Cut many a lawn to earn the money for that unit. Connect good speakers to it and it sounds good for its vintage.
Someone uploaded a track from that Boston tape on CZcams and it actually sounds AWESOME! He even explained how he did it.
That's why I use it as a tester tape.
I was born in the late 70s, but I can tell you that adding a turntable would have been pretty sweet. AUX would have only been used for reel-to-reel, which was a high end thing, or tape deck, which would have been so inferior next to an 8-track at the time that it could be overlooked. I'm guessing the phono connection was for a magnetic cartridge since you said it amplified a whole lot.
Robert, I have the same radio/8-track receiver with a built in turntable on top. It's the H-2001 model. Has a BSR C141 record changer. My late neighbor gave it to me. Disassembled it, cleaned it up and I just love it !
It's a compact stereo... much like the Craig-built one I had as my first back in the early-90's. And probably not much better in function than it, either... other than having a built-in mag-cart phono pre-amp.😕
Alcohol(not the drinking kind) should remove the black goo on the door. Great find
That's a pretty cool unit. Pioneer usually made quality stuff.....You might be able to remove that black gunk in the 8 track door with some alcohol on a Q-tip??
Yeah, we ended up just cleaning it off with windex and a paper towel afterward. It just required some scrubbing and patience.
Do you do AM DXing at all? A lot of these old receivers have great AM radios. If you didn't know already, at night, AM can travel a very long way (but only at night). I can easily pick up WSM out of Nashville in Philadelphia with a decent AM radio even without a long wire antenna. I can also get Toronto and even Chicago. It's fun seeing what you can pick up.
I actually got into SDR for a little bit. But since we moved into the condo, I haven't been able put my bit antenna outside.
i had it conected to a ES-2000 system bought apart, the system was bought in japan so the radio fm ended in 88 ,instead of starting so it had two purposes
at 00:20 i see that Sansui receiver - wondering what model that is. I still use a 331 to deliver audio from my PC and run AA-3900 two ways (8 inch woofer). Great combination, warm, full sound. My dad and myself travelled 4 hours to buy them back around 1982.
I'll have to get back to you on that. It's in a storage unit already so I'll look next time I'm in there.

I trashed picked that very same unit last year. Mines was missing few knob and had to replace a transistor in the FM circuit. Also, mines has a worn head as one channel sounds muddy no matter what I did with the head. I do have junk 8-track player I can transplant the head out of. Overall, it sounds good for what it is.
I need to apply a pitch mod onto one of these to play back at low speeds

8 Tracks are cool i own 2 of them one of them is a Panasonic and the other is a built in one with a Record player“ Sony HP- 238 “ that you can actually RECORD 8 Track Tapes and yes I’ve made my own Custom 8 track tapes with their own Lables , fixing an 8 track is easy , 1 get “ sensing foil tape “ that is for the metal splice 2 get soft sponge pressure pads “ trust me the audio quality dose improve

I never had a player, or any tapes. My two neighbors when I lived in Virginia in the early 70's did, and I didn’t like them.

A casseiver was a real thing popular in the 80s and early 90s. This ain't it. It doesn't have a cassette player. Though I suppose 8trackceiver just doesn't roll off the tongue as easy.
This thing is too austere and sensible looking for my tastes. It needs some VFDs, some needle meters and some flashing lights.
I'm 58 and never heard the word casseiver.
