  • Dr Sarah Myhill is one of the world’s leading physicians in the fight against both Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). During the course of her career, she has become passionate about the role of a healthy diet in not only treating, but preventing, the epidemic of ‘modern’ diseases ravaging our population, such as dementia, cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
In this short film, Dr Myhill discusses the intimate relationship between addiction to mind-altering substances and addiction to sugar and simple carbohydrates. She describes the patterns she has witnessed in patients in terms of addiction, and how this topic dominates much of her clinical practice.
Raised sugar consumption is understood to be linked with many of the most prevalent health challenges we face, yet the fundamentally addictive nature of sugar consumption is left out of much of the discussion. The tragedy of this is that those struggling with sugar addiction are left without a working model as to why they are compelled to such behaviour patterns. Even though they rationally know that these behaviour patterns are harming them, they find it difficult to confront such patterns because the addictive drivers of such behaviour have not been explained to them in an intellectually convincing manner.
Addiction kills, and sugar addiction kills prolifically. Dr Myhill believes that the time has come to get real about what recovery from this addiction truly entails.

Addictions stem from emotional pain, trauma, cptsd, ptsd.

I've been trying to get to keto, well, I'm very, very close. I'm stable at my goal weight and feeling some energy, but I'm not as active as a regular person yet. I've been working at this for almost 2 years and have no problem giving up the pastries and breads... they just don't taste good anymore. My only downfall is fruit. I've heard that as a woman, I just need a few more carbs than a man to maintain hormone levels. Do you think that if I can get rid of that apple or cup of blueberries per day, in order to be fruitless (LOL!) that it would relieve even more of my chronic fatigue? (I try to follow AIP and Daily Intermittent fasting protocols as well.) 💖🌞 🌵

Hi Suzi, my experience has been I needed to stop eating fruit for a period of time until my 'fungal' issues were under control, then I could put back a limited amount. I think it depends on what else you're eating too - if those are the only fresh items, then they're important. That's just my view! From what I've heard her say, if a Keto/Paleo diet (and you are so close I'd assume you're in there) isn't working as it should it could be the thyroid because of it's use in metabolizing fats/protein. Now I've probably misstated all of that but the gist is the thyroid could be underfunctioning. But as LTBM said join and check in the support group which you likely have. :)

How do you do these types of diets if you have no gallbladder? I did the keto diet for 2 months and was not able to continue because I was not able to digest fat properly. I tried Ox Bile and digestive enzyme pills but both failed me. Any other thoughts?

Hi Angel, I don't know the answer. Best suggestion would be to join and post in the Support For The Followers Of Dr Myhill's Protocol facebook group. Hope you find some answers. Sian, LTBM team member

I take a teaspoon of d-ribose per in my morning coffee. (I only drink one or two 10 ounces of coffee per day, with 2 Tablespoons of coconut oil per cup.) The teaspoon I have is about 5g maybe a bit more. The information I have seen says d-ribose is a carb or sugar... how or should I be counting that in with my carbs when trying to get keto? Should I be counting my other supplements as well? Do you think that because I'm taking d-ribose that it's causing me to crave fruit later in the day? 💖🌞 🌵

I think everyone is different Suzi - ribose is a sugar, but its also useful for energy. Only you can do your individual cost/risk math..

My thought is no (or maybe not). A few times I've done an 80/20 paleo diet for several months (low carb but not none) and I stopped craving carbs as soon as I went to that sort of diet (though that's just me, we're all different) . So why cravings: I don't drink coffee but some people get cravings because caffeine can mess with blood sugar apparently. Also do you get enough fat? Enough good quality water? Lack of those things could cause cravings that we misinterpret as carb-cravings. AND going too high protein can be counter-productive as it turns to sugar (or acts like it in the body or something)! So the keto/paleo diet I'm starting now is higher fat, moderate protein, plenty of good fiber to keep the large intestine happy (stop cravings??), nothing added but supplements. Side note: I found that having no carbs made me incredibly tired (worsened my already chronic fatigue), though now I'm going to attempt to get as low-carb as I can with help from a good ND to keep testing me and find out the culprits (thyroid etc) if I still don't feel well.
