Santa Monica Residents Demand Safety Attention as Homeless Population Increase | John Alle

  • "Santa Monica is actually the third busiest hub in all of LA County for overdoses, and we're the first open-air needle distribution in the country. We have an average of 6000 to 7000 transit addicts coming through Santa Monica every year, with 2000 remaining at any given time. 95% are from out of state."
Siyamak sits down with John Alle, a real estate expert and co-founder of the Santa Monica Coalition thesantamonicacoalition.org/ The City of Santa Monica has been impacted by homelessness, drug addiction, and drug overdoses. John will tell us how the residents are feeling about this and how Santa Monica residents are not ready to give up on their city.
"Landlords ask the tenants, 'Why are you moving?' 'I can't leave at the crack of dawn to go to my job. I can't come home at night. I can't empty my trash.' The city would like us to feel this as normal, and the residents have become almost desensitized. I grew up there. I have connections there. I walked to Palisades Park with my grandfather. It's chilling what's happening, and it's being left alone. That's why I care so much. I can't let a city as gorgeous as Santa Monica go down the tubes."

I remember 7 years ago the City of Santa Monica's answer to the homeless crisis was to spend $1m on making a brochure to hand out to the community on how to talk nicely to the homeless. Since then billions of dollar continue to be wasted on programs that do nothing because its being treated as a housing first problem.

Until police are allowed to enforce the law, DA’s prosecute crimes and the citizens vote for candidates that care more about law abiding citizens than coddling criminals, addicts, and the mentally disturbed, CA will continue to be a state filled w/ danger and lunacy! I appreciate that he is fighting for the “home town” he remembers. God Bless him! That said, the residents of Santa Monica (LA, San Fran, Oakland, San Diego etc.) must awaken, engage, and force change via votes, recalls, the changing of laws that decriminalize crime, and a refusal to ignore and/or acclimate to the erosion of safe, civil, cohesive society.

It’s such a shame to see what’s happening here, not just in Santa Monica, but everywhere in the state! My family used to own a beach house in Santa Monica. Some of my best childhood memories were there… It’s devastating what’s been allowed to happen there. I no longer feel safe walking the Promenade in broad daylight and the city smells like human waste. I hope to God it can be fixed but with the amount of people pouring into the state illegally, I have little to no hope of things ever getting better. The irony is that they’re putting illegals up in nice hotels while our homeless citizens are sleeping on the streets, in our parks, on our beaches, in public restrooms, etc. and Santa Monica won’t open a shelter!? This is why so many of us have left and/or are leaving.

  • @user-hn9tn5tm2z

To John Alle: My heart goes out to you over that attempted murder of you by a homeless lunatic. I know Santa Monica like the back of my hand going back a very long time ago. I worked for the city. The city had efficient and reliable law and order, and the local courthouse judges did their job according to the book and law. I often did jogging runs on the surf sand from south city limits to the north limits and back. It was always safe at the beach. I had attended SM City College and it was really safe, clean, and a quality experience.
I know that radical leftist elements crept into the city, such as Tom Hayden and associates that opened the door for fundamental changes with rent control and other economic policies that contributed to the demise we see today today. Voting and elections have consequences which unfortunately backfired upon the city over the years.
Businesses are learning that they can sell online. Consumers are gravitating to e-commerce and grub hub. Yes, business owners close down due to crime, vagrancy, loitering, public filth, etc.
It is more than just elected officials at fault. The current judges in California made many rulings favoring the existence of these current conditions. There are also federal judges in California and in the nation that rendered rulings that have created these conditions.
With sales tax revenues declining, and other problems with fiscal responsibility by the government, along with bureaucrats having attitudes and beliefs leaning leftist and socialist, Santa Monica undoubtedly is going to suffer worse conditions. The government and judges aren’t going to fix what they caused.
The remedy that is needed, but won’t happen, is that homelessness and vagrancy must be addressed as a misdemeanor crime as in the past. That gets people off the streets and parks, alleys, sidewalks, etc. Sorry, the leftist/socialist policies must end and law and order must be reinstated. California is wealthy and therefore there is money for the criminal justice system to do its job, along with programs to divert arrested people into government shelters and rehab programs. The money is there, but the politics must change. However, the government officials are stubborn and determined they are doing their jobs correctly and with the best solutions or rights of the homeless and criminals.
So long as Californians keep voting to have a single party in control of government at state and local levels, then nothing will change. Expect worse conditions when one party has a monopoly and are stubborn they have the best policies and solutions.
Again, your interview was heart wrenching to watch. It should have never happened, but the doors were opened up for this by numerous mistakes by the voters, politicians, bureaucrats and judges that made brand new discretionary rulings to support what the public sees happening today on the streets.
Good luck that your health and your activism to save Santa Monica has positive outcomes.

Homelessness will be my #1 issue this election. Get this: in 1954 CA had 57,000 in the state mental hospitals. Now CA has less then 5,000 in the state mental hospitals and the population is many times more then it was in 54. From observation it looks like most homeless are disabled. There's the man with no feet from amputation from diabetes. He lives in front of the ER in his wheelchair because by law the ER has to treat everyone who comes in. There's the lady with the narly, oozing sores in front of the 7-11. I stopped going to that store because I don't want to step in her infection. My friend who lost everything when her place totally burned down. The list goes on and on. BTW, I've never been to Santa Monica so my stories aren't from there.

If you are a drug addict or alcoholic, the impact is that you will not be able to work and no business owner will employ a drug addict or alcoholic. Therefore you go bankrupt and sell your assets to feed your addiction, and you become homeless. Your own actions are what caused you to become an addict and homeless. An addict is a mental illness, if not treated early he will become a crazy person. He will do anything to fulfill his addiction. And they tend to always threaten the security and comfort of sane communities when their addiction recurs. The obligation of local administration, regional people's representatives, regional judges, regional prosecutors, is to secure sane communities and separate addicts from sane environments. Addicts must be quarantined and rehabilitated far from the community. For the safety and comfort of citizens, the law must be strict, not effeminate.

I use the restrooms, sinks, and 🚿 shower at least once a week. I barely survive due to a fixed income. I pray 🙏 EVERYDAY for an Asteroid to smash this planet or a sudden world war to happen so for sure I would be gone quickly the sooner the better because this human experience has been trecherous!!! - the end.

Our jails and mental institutions are overcrowded. How about sentencing the drug addicts to a place to get well? Research shows an 85% drop in recidivism by putting addicts into Recovery. In the 80’s our state had ample funding for free Detox and Recovery Homes. There are free faith~based programs like Teen Challenge for adults. Working with professionals in the Recovery industry helps the most because they have experience and research in this area.

I think many are homeless because housing costs are too high compared to the wages. How about we incentivize home or apartment building until there exists a 10% vacancy rate? The the landlords will have to compete for tenants and the prices should come down. I think some of the drug use is due to hopelessness of ever becoming a homeowner and the accompanying feelings of disenfranchisement. If the jail all the homeless and drug users I don't think that is necessary and it is inhumane. Just overbuild housing by ten percent - two by fours, draywall, pvc and abs pipe and romex and some portland cement to solve the problem is not that expensive.

Too many restrictions due to NIMBYism. Also, California has strong rights for tenants and squatters. No one wants to rent to anyone who doesn't have at least 3 times the rent because of this. It's been in the news that in order to rent a one bedroom apartment in SM, one has to make at least $98,000 annually.

    • @policedog4030
      @policedog4030 Před měsícem +1

@@truther001 Definitely agree regarding the Nimby phenomenon. When I wrote build housing until there exists a ten percent vacancy rate, another way to say that would be that California would builds thirty million or so homes and as quickly as possible. One problem I see is that the Gen Z (currently between 9 and 24 years old) who should ideally already be in their starter homes so that they can start their families while they are in their 20's are being disenfranchised from the housing market by the disparity between incomes and housing costs. One factor is that they are forced to compete for each available housing unit with 1.) Wealthy Foreigners worldwide, (since anyone an the world can buy real estate in the USA with just a tax id number. and 2.) with of course the wealthy real estate investors - not a fair fight.
