    BMW oil levels are measured hot - get the engine up to temp, switch off and leave for five mins, and then check the level.
    If you have to check cold, aim for the MIN level on the dipstick for the time being and wait until you can check it hot.

    I believe it is 6.5 L which is about 6.8 quarts. Where do you see 0w-40 being recommended? I have always seen 5W-30.

      Garrett Gomes 5w30 should be used for engines that have low mileage (under 200k miles). After that you should use 5w40.

      In colder areas like Canada its better to use 0w40

      In the summer i have been using 10W60 , because its a lot thicker , and in the cold season i switch to 5W40 , the oil is always clean af , but i need to change it twice a year. Not that bad if you ask me

    My mechanic ran out of filters, but still put new oil. What will happen if I put a new filter in without draining oil?

      If the car is jacked up you can usually pull out the oil filter without making a huge mess. Even if it isn't jacked up on ramps it should be ok. It will make a slight mess but you can definitely replace it. You will have to top it off though.

      Tilemaxos 12 hope so cuz I just did, I changed my oil last night but autozone wasn’t open so I waited until this morning to replace the filter.

      @brianc9036 Před 3 lety +1

      Just be prepared to have a bit of oil spilling out. But it is completely possible to change it out. Being at the top of the engine gravity is on your side. If the car is on ramps or jacks it should be less messy.

    • @d.c.rhodes66
      @d.c.rhodes66 Před 5 lety +4

      Agree. It does look like there is a crack on the pan. A small amount of oil seems to be weeping from the crack. There numerous products that can be used to seal a small crack such as on this oil pan.

    • @brianc9036
      @brianc9036 Před 3 lety +2

      It is unlikely the pan is cracked. The oil pan gasket fails often on e46 and its really not a DIY project.

    • @brianc9036
      @brianc9036 Před 2 lety

      @@diljoe9678 You have to have an engine support to remove the pan. If you are doing this in a shop with a lift its not that bad. But in a home garage on ramps or jacks. Not ideal in my opinion.
