- Lady is almost ready to foal!! As we are approaching her due date, we wanted to see how much she weighs and have a contest to see if you can guess her weight! Then we are doing some sawing in the sawmill!

We bought 2-yr-old laying hens off a truck as they were being loaded to drive off. Their career as layers for a large egg production "factory" was over. The owner declared he was doing us a favor and charged one dollar per hen. I think we bought eight. We had chicken feed trays and water set on the floor of the hen house. Next morning when I went out toward the hen house, I could hear loud "tap, tap, tap" coming from there. I looked through the window. All the hens were lined up pecking at the wall!! They were expecting the conveyor belts of feed to be there. Anyway, it took a few days and they were no longer tapping the wall but pecking the food out of the floor trays.
A very interesting observation. For a dollar a hen I definitely would have bought a bunch more. Why? Because I think some friends would take some of them off my hands and the rest probably five at a time, would go in the freezer. Don’t hate me, they would be well cared for before the freezer.

I've missed seeing Lady she's such a pretty mare. I could see that foal kicking around in there he or she is ready to hit the ground soon! I hope Lady has an easy delivery and everything goes well.

1,884 lbs for Lady! She's so beautiful! Bree is so pretty. I'd say one reason Bree looks like she isn't gaining all that much is because she's gaining in height and it just makes her look thinner. But getting rid of the parasites in her gut will help a lot with her keeping weight on! Brenda, hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day!!!!!!❤

Jim and Brenda, My guess is that Lady presently weighs in at 1925 lbs or 873 kilograms. I don't know who is more content in milking Pansy . Brenda or Pansy. The hand milking takes me back to the 1950's on my Grand Parent' s Farm on Prince Edward Island Canada with my Grand Mother hand milking a 1/2 dozen milk cows. They did invest in a couple of milking machines later down the road .
We will guess 1845 on Lady's weight gain. Happy

Bree is looking good. Can't believe that Lady is almost ready to foal. I think that's great how good of a farm hand William is. How he, in between loading wood into his machine, he comes over and takes the scrap pieces off of Jim's side and puts them on the pile. What a great worker he is. Brenda did an awesome job too in spite of Skippy trying to "help". Really flat tire on the wood cart William was taking from. Pansy is looking good. Glad she's eating grass.

1839 is my guess for Lady. I’m curious to see if she becomes sweet and loving with the new foal or goes back to being kind of ornery.
Use a leather strap and it can swing around the post.
Or a piece of pipe 4" wide a get a welder to weld a chain link on pipe

1889 lbs. my guess for Lady. Jim, I grazed a milk cow just like that. I used an axle that still had a hub on it so the rope didn't keep getting tangled and shorter.
I think Lady looks beautiful when she is with foal. That being said I think she is at 1859lbs. So happy Bree put on some weight from last time, and she is going to be a beautiful colored horse.

Pansy might like alfalpha better then just grass. Just an idea. I know my dad always grew alfalpha hay for the cows, but ours were beef cows, not sure if theres a difference ?

I saw william using a gas powered machine. I thought the Amish weren't allowed to machinery like that or is it just electrical machines? Or showing his face? Lol I'm so confused! The horses look so beautiful and Bree is so big now! I can't wait to see her interact with her new brother or sister ❤
FYI, the different Amish groups are vastly different from one another. Some are VERY strict, and others can use phones, tractors and other power equipment. The "strict" ones frequently "shun" the less strict groups/neighborhoods. The ecclesiastical politicians (church leaders) often believe their leaders' "rules" are more important than the Bible and the words of Jesus Christ himself. I couldn't go that route, and am hostile to that idea. It is anathema to many (probably most, I suspect) Christians. My deceased parents were Evangelical dental missionaries to South Africa, so it is easy for me to presume the Bible is wiser than the Amish Leadership. Among the Amish, some folks get "shunned" for simply refusing to "shun" their friends whom the local church leaders want them to "shun" for being "disobedient" (disagreeing with their group's ecclesiastical politicians.

I see Skippy is still supervisor of all the work and William is still a hard working young man. I will give Lady 1850 lbs and MAY 17 for the birth of her foal. She really looks great and ready to foal. Bree is growing nicely such a good looking young horse. Y'all work hard and the Good Lord will bless y'all. I will try to remember to pray for Lady to have a safe birthing of another healthy foal. I will also pray for y'all.

I cannot thank you enough for telling the story about the worming syringe cap!! I did the same thing! I felt like a horrible person and I questioned my sanity! I found out that I had done it because my mare just casually and expertly spit it out like she would a pill lolol. It’s amazing how sensitive they are with such big mouths and tongues and how dexterous they can be. Also, you probably know this already but a dog can be very negatively affected by the medicine in worming meds so they shouldn’t allowed around the house when they are being wormed.
I am going to guess Lady weighs in at 1937 lbs. The grain you just sowed should have a really good start for growing with the rain. It is 25 degrees celsius(77 F) here in Central Alberta🇨🇦Waiting anxiously for the results🤠

I think you and your wife have developed one of the best entertaining channel on You Tube. Your understanding of your horses are very impressing. I must say that the young man on "Down the trail logging" is a very good channel. He gives one command, one word and his horses follows! I understand he is only working with two horses and your situation is different, because you have young horses that you are trying to introduce into your stable. Please keep up the good work!

It was great to see Bree has gained a bit of weight and is in a starting ta growth spurt . Providing her with another dose of worm paste is a great idea. as well. Hey Jim your right it's always a good idea to remove the tip cover of the wormer syringe before pressing the plunger LOL Bree obviously worked out the plastic tip and dropped it on the floor.

Watching Brenda doing the milking brings back fond memories.I first learned to milk a cow around 8 years old.that was over 60 years ago.before school and after as I was the oldest it became my job and dad could turn his hand to other things.
